We are pleased to present this 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa finished in Carmine Red. Marking the inaugural year for the desirable G50 5-speed manual gearbox, this 1987 example was also specified with a Linen interior, rear window wiper, and electrically operated Sport Seats.  A recent service has been completed at a cost of over $7k including new tires, brakes, and a refresh of the suspension with upgraded Wevo mounts.  Said to have been driven very sparingly under the care of its previous long-term owner, this 911 Targa is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York with just over 52k miles showing on the odometer.

This 911 came factory finished in Carmine Red (80F), a shade introduced for the 1987 model year and rarely seen on cars of this era.  Exterior details include a black Targa band, optional rear window wiper, U.S. market bumperettes, integrated front fog lights, and a newly installed rubber front spoiler.  The seller reports the right front fender to have been previously refinished to address a scratch and describes the paint to be in excellent condition overall, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  The factory 16” Fuchs forged wheels have been dressed in a set of brand new Continental ExtremeContact tires.

Inside, this 911 features a Linen partial leather interior with factory power-operated Sport Seats, a steering wheel with an elevated hub, automatic heating control, and cruise control.  Red Coco floor mats have been added along with an updated Blaupunkt radio.  Minor signs of wear are present on the seats and the seller confirms all accessories and instrumentation to be working properly.

This Carrera is equipped with an air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine that develops up to 217 HP and 195 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a Getrag 5-speed (G50) manual gearbox.  A recent service was completed by Speedsport Tuning at a cost of over $7k including new fluids, belts, filters, front and rear hood struts, all new brake calipers and hoses, a new oil tank sender unit, new rear axles, and a refresh of the suspension with upgraded Wevo rear sway bar mounts.  The suspension was also lowered to European ride height during this time. A corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery along with images of the undercarriage.

This sale will include a toolkit, spare tire, recent service invoice, and a clean title. A beautifully presented and well-equipped example, this 1987 911 makes an excellent choice for any Porsche enthusiast searching for a classic air-cooled Targa.

@cbrady355 I own the car. It was purchased from the same owner who has had it since 1997.
He used it sparingly. He had several cars including a few other P Cars.
I do have and have supplied Pcar with the most recent services. The last owner was in the process of moving and was unable to find any old records.
No engine work was performed at Speedsport during the last service as none was or is needed.
There are no known rust issues. It was used mostly in fair weather only and what you see on the undercarriage is normal wear for this car. While it was not used while any salt was on the road, it was used often earlier in it's life and was not a garage queen. It's pretty tidy and if you prefer a car that looks as nice underneath it does on top, I am certain that this car could be detailed and cleaned up enough to meet your criteria.
The tires are new. I installed them when it was at Speedsport during this past service. I also supplied photos of the date codes but Pcar choose not to display those. I'd be glad to send them and copies of the service that was just performed but perhaps we can take this conversation to a private chat. Please hit the contact seller button.
    I hope this helps.........

@DriverM - Beautiful G50! I'm interested in bidding but have a few questions:
    1) Can you clarify on the "PREVIOUS long term owner" comment? Are you the owner or are you consigning? The CarFax shows the last title issued in 1997. Asking bc of the drastically reduced mileage shown from 1997-present makes me think there could potentially be some mileage discrepancies on the CarFax which leads me to my next question...
    2) CarFax shows 44.5k miles in 1997 (average of ~4500 miles/year from '87-'97) then from '97-2012 mileage only goes up ~6k miles to 50.7k miles (average of ~400 miles/year in that time frame) and finally from 2012-present mileage only goes up ~2k miles to 52.6k (average of ~200 miles/year). Is there any documentation, other than the CarFax, to show these numbers are accurate?
    3) Do you have any other receipts/documents/etc from any previous owners/services including the most recent $7k service? The description says there is a receipt but I'm not seeing it - am I missing it? Any original documentation?
    4) You've said there wasn't a compression or leak down test completed but during the most recent service, was there any engine work completed? Or was there at least an inspection of the engine at this time? Any documents to back that up?
    5) As a long time northeastern car and some of the undercarriage images showing some amount of corrosion, can you comment on any know rust issues -either present or that have been treated? If you are the long term owner can you give potential bidders some insight as to when this car was driven? (i.e. spring/summer, not in ice and on salted roads etc?).
    6) Tire tread looks good, do you have pics of the dates on these tires?

Thanks for your feedback as it may help inspire confidence in bidding!

@Betta17 An elevated hub means the steering wheel is about 2 inches further from the dashboard closer to the driver.
    The AC is working.

  • Betta17 (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

    1. What does “steering wheel with elevated hub” mean?
    2. Does this vehicle have an operating AC unit?

@BarryLe There are a few very minor chips. I’d say normal wear. There is nothing that jumps out at you or that is large enough to even photograph.

@DriverM @DriverM: What is the condition of the paint on the front of the car. I am assuming there is no
PPF on the nose of the car. Are there many stone chips or other areas of road rash on the front of the car?

  • DriverM (seller) 2 years, 6 monthsago

@BarryLe Hello Barry. The wear on the seats is normal and consistent with the miles. That being said, if you prefer a pristine look, the seats can be recovered. I did that recently on another Porsche that had a Linen interior. I ordered the covers from Autos International and they were perfect.

Mark: This Carmine Red Targa would pair nicely with my 2018 Carmine Red Targa 4 GTS. The wear on the seats lets the car down a bit. Can the leather be reconditioned and or dyed to perk them up or should they just be recovered in new leather?

@TyStav There are no oil leaks. I have not done a compression or leak down.

  • TyStav (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

Great looking car. Love the color combo. Any oil leaks? Have you had a compression or leak down test performed on the cylinders? Thanks for the time.
