Up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Grand Prix White over a black leather interior. Representing a major update for Porsche’s 928 grand tourer, the S4 debuted in 1987 with revised styling, improved brakes, and a new 5.0L V8 engine with four valves per cylinder. This first-year example came factory equipped with a rare 5-speed manual transmission, manually adjustable Sport Seats, a limited-slip differential, and a sunroof.  Under the current ownership, this 928 has been serviced with a valve cover reseal, new shocks, all new fuel lines, coolant lines, and a recent timing belt and water pump replacement.  It has also been upgraded with larger fuel injectors, D-Cat X-pipe, a GT muffler, and a performance ECU chip.  Now with approximately 145k kilometers (90k miles) showing on the odometer, this 928 S4 is being offered for auction by its seller out of Ontario, Canada.

This 928 comes finished in Grand Prix White with optional body-colored side moldings. The S4 can be distinguished from its predecessors by an aerodynamically revised front fascia, larger taillight assemblies, and a rear spoiler. Some minor cosmetic imperfections are noted including a few touched-up chips on the front end and slight cracking on the rear bumper below the taillights.  The CARFAX report shows minor damage to have occurred in 2003, and the seller notes the driver side and front hood to have likely been refinished. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.  The rear spoiler has been painted to match the body and a set of 17” Porsche Cup 2 wheels have been equipped and dressed in a set of Michelin Pilot A/S 4 tires.  The original set of 16” Flat Dish polished wheels are also said to accompany the sale.

Inside, you will find a well-kept black leather interior highlighting desirable factory Sport Seats and an original Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio. Standard equipment includes a digital clock, automatic A/C, central locking, power windows, a rear window wiper, and center console cassette storage. A few small cracks are noted on the dashboard between the windshield defroster vents, the A/C is currently inoperable, and the ventilation system occasionally reverts to heat.  All other accessories and features are said to be working properly.

This 928 S4 carries a robust 5.0L 32-valve V8 DOHC engine that produces as much as 320 HP stock.  The rear wheels are driven through a rare and highly desirable 5-speed manual transmission with a factory optioned limited-slip differential.  Upgrades include a D-Cat exhaust X-pipe, a GT rear muffler, a Porken S300S ECU chip, 24 lb. fuel injectors, and a secondary air pump delete.  Service carried out under the current ownership includes a valve cover reseal and new chain tensioner pads in 2015, new shocks and coilover hardware in 2016, a refresh of the intake system in 2017, and new brake pads, rotors, timing belt, and water pump 2020.   All new fuel and coolant lines are also said to have been installed under the current ownership. Images of the undercarriage are provided in the gallery along with a detailed maintenance log.

This sale will include a clean title. Showcasing factory Sport Seats and a seldom seen 5-speed manual transaxle, this thoroughly serviced 928 S4 is not to be overlooked.

@Tartan43 I did install the Porken S300S chips myself. They are designed to work with the 24lbs injectors on the S4s and I got those from Roger Tyson. The FPRs are stock and tested good when I did the injector upgrade. I also installed all new seals and hardware with the injectors, there should be scans of the receipts in the photos section.

I can assist with export paperwork to the extend of sending scans of documents over or potentially getting documentation from a Porsche dealer or our Ministry of Transportation. I've never done an export process and I'm not familiar at all with what might be required to get a Canadian car imported to the US.

@jakubs beautiful 928! Did you install both LH and EZF chips from Porken? Did you also upgrade the FPR when installing the bigger fuel injectors or does the LH programming meant for 24lb injectors? Also, as @GDluxury asked, are you able to assist with shipping to the US?

  • GDLuxury (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Are you able to help with shipping i found some basic rules does this car comply with this?

@1991928gt No warning lights remain on. the registrations show up on Canadian carfax every time the license plate sticker / registration is renewed, should basically be every year but recently it became possible to renew every two years.

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

could I ask, why are there so many registrations?

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

does the aftermarket ECU or any of the mods cause warning lights? Are there any warning lights that remain on?

  • jakubs (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

@1991928gt The AC hasn't worked since I've owned the car, I've never looked into what it needs. All the components are present and the compressor doesn't make noise when the dash button is pressed.
All electrics work - windows, sunroof, seats, both hatch releases and hatch key, alarm, radio/casette and all speakers, windshield wash and intensive wash, wipers, cruise, etc.
Next on my list for this car is to investigate the HVAC for occasionally blowing hot air only. It's a common issue with these cars and has been getting more frequent in this car.

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

the a/c doesn't work? are there any electrical gremlins? lights that don't work, sunroof/windows that don't roll up/back?

  • jakubs (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

The back seats are black along with the rest of the interior. The interior is very nice, original and unmodified. In the one picture the back seats appear brownish due to lighting only.

When I changed the timing belt, I overhauled the original Porsche timing belt tensioner, no Porken tensioner on this car.

Failure of the crankshaft thrust bearing is very rare in 5 speed 928s, however I have disabled the clutch switch and always start the car without depressing the clutch to avoid any potentially unnecessary thrust bearing wear.

I can't comment on what it would take to import this car into the US, only to say this is a Canadian market car purchased originally at Performance Cars in St. Catherine's, Ontario so all the usual steps needed to get it imported to the US would need to be taken.

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

why are the back seats brown and the front interior of the car is black?

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

Has it every had a porken tensioner put in to prevent the catastrophic thrust bearing failure issue?

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 2 years, 5 monthsago

what is involved to get the car into the US? what EPA/DOT issues need to be cleared? How about customs duties and taxes?

  • jakubs (seller) 2 years, 5 monthsago

The 2003 claim was an animal strike where the driver side fender was replaced according to the previous owner. I'm not sure what the 1994 claim was, but to me it looks like the driver side and the hood have been resprayed at some point.

@jakubs How long have you owned the car? Any idea what was done during the previous 2 accidents/insurance claims (>$20k CAD in 1994/2003)?
