Up for auction is this 1987 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Dark Blue over a two-tone Cashmere Beige and blue leather interior. Representing one of the most significant evolutions for Porsche’s 928 grand tourer, the S4 debuted in 1987 with revised styling, improved brakes, and a new 5.0L V8 engine with four valves per cylinder. This first-year 928 S4 came generously equipped from the factory with heated power-operated seats, memory settings, adjustable lumbar support, side protection moldings, an amplified sound system, Sport Shock Absorbers, and a 4-speed automatic transaxle with a limited-slip differential.  A timing belt and water pump replacement were carried out just prior to the current owner’s purchase in 2015 and the car has since been treated to extensive service as well as a custom upgraded exhaust, Koni coilover suspension, and rebuilt air conditioning system. Now with just over 79k miles showing on the odometer, this 928 S4 is being offered for auction by its owner out of New York.

This 928 came factory finished in Dark Blue (Dunkelblau 347), one of the rarest and most sought-after nonmetallic blues in Porsche’s color palette.  Optional body-colored side moldings were equipped from the factory and this 928 can be identified as an S4 model by its rounded aerodynamic nose, larger taillight assemblies, and black polyurethane rear spoiler.  The finish is described to have been kept in good condition overall with some signs of road-going wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage. Additional photos can be found in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report. This S4 rides on factory 16” flat dish forged wheels dressed in a set of Toyo Proxes T1R tires.

The cabin is trimmed in a two-tone combination of Cashmere Beige and blue leather with matching blue carpets and headliner.  A European non-airbag steering wheel has been fitted along with an aftermarket black leather gear selector, an updated Blaupunkt Toronto 420BT radio, and a custom leather-wrapped dashboard.  The air-conditioning system was completely overhauled under the current ownership along with repairs to the electrical system as detailed in the invoices provided in the gallery.  Standard equipment includes a digital clock, automatic climate control, central locking, power windows, power seats, a rear window wiper, and center console cassette storage.  The factory specifications label lists the following original option codes:

  • 018 – Steering Wheel with Elevated Hub
  • 158 – Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46
  • 220 – Limited Slip Differential
  • 302 – Model Designation on Rear End
  • 340 – Seat Heating, Right
  • 418 – Side Protection Moldings
  • 474 – Boge Sport Shock Absorbers
  • 490 – Sound System
  • 494 – Additional Amplifier
  • 513 – Lumbar Support, Right Seat
  • 533 – Alarm
  • 537 – Seat Memory, Left
  • 538 – Seat Memory, Right
  • 586 – Lumbar Support, Left Seat
  • 650 - Sunroof

The 928 S4 was introduced with a new 5.0L V8 featuring dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, Motronic (LH Jetronic) engine management, knock sensors, and two electric cooling fans.  The 4-speed automatic transmission also received slightly modified final drive ratios.  Offering an output of up to 320 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque, the new drivetrain allowed the 928 S4 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 6 seconds with a top speed over 160 MPH. An optional limited-slip differential was equipped from the factory while the exhaust system has been upgraded with a set of headers, a rear muffler bypass, and an x-pipe which provides for increased sound and performance.  Upgraded Koni coilover shocks have also been installed with the ride height lowered approximately half an inch. The timing belt, water pump, and valve cover gaskets were replaced as part of major service in 2015 at 72,624 miles.  A corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery along with a collection of records from the current ownership.

This sale will include service records, an owner's manual, and a clean title.  Offering more power and refinement than its predecessors, the S4 remains a top choice for transaxle Porsche enthusiasts. This well-maintained, nicely appointed, and tastefully upgraded 1987 example is just waiting to be enjoyed by a new owner.

@Dozer To the best of my knowledge the paint is all original.

  • Dozer (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

    Is the paint all original?

  • wws911s (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@fnutz A friend of mine did the same before I did and I was impressed with the ride and perfformance.
The staff at 928 motorsports did extensive research before recommending the setup.

Any particular reason you recent went with aftermarket coil overs and not OEM? TY

The front bumper is not metal so a paint meter will not register any results. Nice car; GLWTA!

I will try and come up with a paint meter to do this. We took readings from all over the car when the pics were taken.

Can you supply a pic of the paint thickness of the front bumper at multiple locations. Thanks.
