This 1987 Porsche 944 comes finished in Guards Red over a black interior and features a 5-speed manual transmission. It has been treated to an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration, surpassing $25k in investment. The restoration encompassed a comprehensive overhaul, offering a two-stage refinish, replacement of the engine and transmission, installation of Lindsey Racing fuel lines, upgraded suspension elements, stainless steel brake lines, an Only944 short-shift kit, a rear sway bar with adjustable drop links, alongside numerous other enhancements and rebuilt components. This 944 is now being offered for auction at no reserve by its seller out of South Carolina.

As part of its restoration, this 944 underwent a refinishing process in Guards Red, involving a 3-coat primer, 3-coat base, and 5-coat clear coat, followed by wet sanding and buffing. It rides on powder-coated 17” Cup-style wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires with under 500 miles of use. Additional upgrades include shaved bumperettes, a new Porsche windshield, powder-coated calipers, and the application of paint protection film to the nose and headlight covers. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing damage in January 1999 and November 2007.

The cabin sports black upholstery with a matching headliner and fresh carpets. During the refurbishment process, any dashboard cracks were expertly repaired, and leather covers were skillfully reapplied to various components including the seats, dashboard, sunroof panel, fiberglass rear panels, and fiberglass rear hatch motor panel. Further enhancements include the rebuilding of the LCD clock, installation of a 9” head unit featuring Apple CarPlay along with new speakers, and replacement of the odometer gear. The seller adds that all seals have been replaced and reports all gauges & accessories to be in working order.

Under the hood, a replacement 2.5-liter inline-four engine from a 1986 944 with 108k miles has been paired to a donated 5-speed manual transmission with 92k miles. A new water pump, timing belt, and balance shaft belt were fitted, along with a new distributor cap, vacuum lines, spark plugs, and plug wires. Noteworthy upgrades include Lindsey Racing fuel lines, a Griffith A/C compressor, and high-flow condenser charged with 134A, an aluminum radiator, and rebuilt injectors with documented flow test results. The transmission has been enhanced with an Only944 short-shift kit, a Sachs clutch, a Linsey Racing semi-solid transmission mount, and rebuilt CV joints. The suspension setup boasts coilovers, Elephant Racing bushings & monoballs, and poly-bronze spring plate bushings. A torsion bar delete was performed and is said to accompany the sale, while a rear sway bar with adjustable drop links was fitted. Stopping power is provided by rebuilt calipers, cross-drilled rotors, and stainless-steel brake lines. Further service items encompass a torque tube rebuild with Blacksea R&D bearings, a rebuilt steering rack, new tie rods, Renbay ball joints, a new fuel pump, filter, & strainer, and a new steering shaft. Wiring upgrades consist of a rebuilt engine wire harness with all new connectors, a re-pinned DME connector, replacement of bad/broken main chassis wires re-pinned to the fuse block, and the rebuilding of the door wiring harness.

This sale will include a salvage title.

The seller would like you to know: “Over $25k in parts have gone into the car during the restoration process and the majority of  nuts and bolts have been replaced with Porsche parts (When available, some bolts and nuts are NLA) Torqued to Porsche spec.”

@Planbjim when I was at the dmv I asked about that when I was there. They told me they didn’t do that. I’ve been honest and uploaded pictures of the work put into the restoration. You’re more than welcome to buy the car and get a salvage rebuilt title in your state.

  • Planbjim (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Synapse120 FYI. South Carolina does inspect Salvage cars and issue Salvage Rebuild titles. Sorry if you’re put off. You replied to others with incorrect info. It affects those of us looking to buy. It’s how it works.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Planbjim I’ve been very straightforward throughout this process and answering questions as they have come up. I bought the car from a seller in North Carolina 7 years ago. The car had a salvage title at that time and didn’t run. It runs now and the state of South Carolina registered it for road use. Porsche USA also allowed me to add the car to my “my Porsche “ cars and lists all the things seen on the options sticker on the car. It’s 40 years old and I don’t have the precise records from the previous 33 years of its history. The state dmv wouldn’t allow a flagged stolen car to be registered.

  • Planbjim (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Synapse120 thanks. But the CARFAX isn’t a legal representation or accurate You’re awfully short on answers regarding this. Thanks anyway for your time. Best of luck.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@jbelcredi it has a SC salvage title and is registered with the dmv. I have the title in hand.

  • jbelcredi (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

have you got a proper title for the car?

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@Planbjim SC doesn’t do rebuilt titles and you can see the car fax history in the listing.

  • Planbjim (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Hello I understand that South Carolina does not do salvage inspections. Was this car not eligible for a rebuilt title versus a salvage title? It seems a rebuilt title issued by your state, would answer a lot of questions regarding previous damage, and the story behind this car. Possibly it could’ve been stolen at some point or written off due to accident damage or hurricane/flooding. Do you have any more of the story? Thank you very much.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@jbelcredi the doors do close properly. In one of the pictures the door is not fully closed if you’re referring to that.

  • jbelcredi (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Can the drivers door be adjusted to close properly?

  • guyschroen (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@guyschroen in that picture I must have had the door partially open. Top view of the door jam and down the car at the bottom of the pictures shortly.

  • guyschroen (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Hi there, quick question on photo #7. Can you confirm that the drivers side door closes flush and upload a picture? Thanks!

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 4 weeksago

@jbelcredi they don’t issue those in SC. Videos of electronics and lights being uploaded shortly.

Do you have a salvage inspection certificate? Do they do that where you are?

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 4 weeksago

@jbelcredi the car had front end damage around the radiator support and headlight buckets. Some damage in the rear. There was some rust in the rockers. I’ve uploaded pictures in the listing.
The car had a four wheel alignment at GMP performance and they said the frame was straight .
Engine had the water pump and timing belts done, new reference sensors. (Many of the things that were done are mentioned in the listing).
The foam in the seats are from a donor set of seats that were in good shape.
The coilovers have adjustable rebound and spring rates.

I will get videos of the electronics when I get home from work.

  • jbelcredi (registered bidder) 1 month, 4 weeksago

    More questions
    - why was the car salvage title?
    - have you got pictures of the car showing damage?
    - was there any rust repair?
    - was there frame damage, if so, was it straightened properly?
    - do you have a repaired salvage car inspection certificate?
    - any testing done on the engine, leak down test?
    - any repairs/maintenance done to the engine?
    - do you know the coil over spring rate?
    - was the foam in the seats replaced?
    Thanks!

  • jbelcredi (registered bidder) 1 month, 4 weeksago

Hi, have you got a video going through the car, testing and showing that all of the electronics work, opening and closing of doors, windows, hood, roof etc... as well showing anything that doesn't work, paint blemishes and so on?

  • Synapse120 (seller) 1 month, 4 weeksago

@guyschroen there is ceramic tint on the hatch, quarter and both door windows at 27% VLT.

  • guyschroen (registered bidder) 1 month, 4 weeksago

There appears to be some aftermarket window tinting on the rear window. Is that true? Can you elaborate on the condition and is it also on other windows?

@guyschroen I’ve 3d modeled a solution. 3d printed it in ASA plastic and applied it to the car. I have some tweaking to do to pull it in more, but new photos of how it looks have been uploaded.

@guyschroen Thank you for the feedback, honestly i didn’t really notice it was that far off until the photos and you pointing it out (i get into the drivers side and drive). I’m working to solve this before the end of the auction. If i am able to fabricate a solution before the auction closes i will upload photos.

  • guyschroen (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

Thank you for the reply. The car really looks great until you see the fender. Based on all that was done through time, effort, sweat and $$ was there no way to fix that problem? Couldn’t something be fabricated? It sticks out like a sore thumb? Sorry but I’m just not getting this.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 2 monthsago

@guyschroen The two newest photos show the driver side wheel liner and passenger side and the hole that should mount to the wheel liner if it had that section.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 2 monthsago

Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.

  • Synapse120 (seller) 2 monthsago

@guyschroen the wheel liner typically has a place to screw down the lower part of the bumper to the wheel liner holding in tight. The wheel liner on the passenger side that I was able to source doesn’t have that. I’ll upload close up of the driver side and passenger side to show the area I’m referring to.

Hi there, beautiful looking 944. Can you comment on the right front fender bottom in front of the tire? It clearly looks to be flaired out compared with the same on the left. See photos 14, 15, 16, & 18. Look forward to you comments, thanks!

@eagle32 There was front end damage around the radiator support and headlight buckets, along with damage to the rear sections. My intention was to enjoy it for a year after restoring it and then put it up for sale. I never calculated the cost involved in the restoration until the few days before the listing going live it’s been a hobby and Porsche has been a life long passion and I hated to watch this car rot in someone’s back yard.

  • eagle32 (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

salvage title -- what was the damage that you appear to have beautifully repaired?
How extensive was the damage? Was the frame bent? These cars in rough shape are not worth much so it would not take much of an accident for an insurance company to salvage the car and pay the owner marketvalue. After all this meticulous work it must be hard to put it up for sale.
