Available for auction is this track-prepped 1987 Porsche 944 S finished in Guards Red. Equipped with a desirable 5-speed manual transmission and a 16-valve 2.5L engine, this one-owner 944 was purchased on 9/25/1987 from Forest Lane Porsche of Dallas, Texas. The car has since been equipped with a host of upgrades including adjustable front and rear Koni shock absorbers, a Safety Devices roll cage, KMR strut mounts and camber plates, Sway-A-Way spring plates, Tarett sway bars, a Quiafe ATB differential, a B&B stainless steel muffler, cat bypass, and more.  It is said to have been run in PCA and SCCA events with corresponding logbooks included in the sale.  Accompanied by maintenance records dating back to the original purchase, this 944 underwent a major service in 2021 including new timing belts, brake pads and rotors, a new valve cover gasket, fluids, and filters.  The ideal transaxle Porsche for a track-going enthusiast, this 944 S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of North Carolina with just under 59k miles showing on the odometer.

This 944 S is finished in Guards Red and sports removable graphics from its racing days.  The seller describes the paint as being all original and recent meter readings are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  The car currently rides on a set of 16” Design 90 wheels dressed in Cooper street tires, and an additional set of 16” 944 Turbo S wheels are said to be included which come dressed in 2021 Toyo Proxes RR tires bearing three heat cycles.

Inside, the cabin has been modified in preparation for track use with the removal of carpeting and the installation of a Safety Devices roll cage, a Recaro Profi SPG driver seat, a Sparco Evo2 Plus passenger seat, 5-point safety harnesses, and a quick-release MOMO steering wheel.  The original dashboard and leather-wrapped door panels have been retained. The A/C system has been removed and all remaining accessories and gauges are said to be fully functional.

This 944 carries a naturally-aspirated 16-valve DOHC 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine that sends power to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle and a Quaife ATB differential.  An Accusump oil accumulator has been installed along with a B&B stainless-steel muffler and cat-bypass pipe.  A manual steering rack has been equipped and the suspension has been upgraded with adjustable Koni shock absorbers, KMR adjustable camber plates and strut mounts, a KMR strut brace, Sway-A-Way spring plates, 29 mm hollow torsion bars, and Tarett Engineering hollow sway bars with drop links and Teflon bushings.

In addition to the high-quality upgrades, this 944 S comes with an extensive history of service dating back to the original purchase. A major service was performed in March of 2021 including new timing belts, brake rotors on all four corners, new Hawk brake pads, and a new valve cover gasket as well as new all new fluids and filters.

This sale will include a clean original title, a set of keys, service records, the original warranty and maintenance booklets, racing logbooks, a set of 944 Turbo S wheels, a set of FABCAR control arms with Delrin bushings, one set of Recaro seat rails and mounts, a window net, and an AMB Tranx 260 transponder as well as spare Accusump oil filters, seals, and endcaps.  For any enthusiast looking to get out on the track in a vintage transaxle Porsche, this thoroughly upgraded and well-documented 944 S is not to be overlooked.

FYI - for those of you asking about registering and driving the car on the street, I previously mentioned that the catalytic converter had been replaced with a B&B stainless steel bypass tube. I failed to mention that we have the original catalytic converter, so one could always re-install in order to pass any smog test that your individual state may require.

@pu911rsr Sorry, I don't have an exact weight and I didn't see anything in the logbook. A few people have contacted me privately and asked about # of races in the logbook and when. I misspoke concerning the last race. The PCA logbooks show 4 races between 1997 and 2000, and the SCCA logbook has 3 events, all in 2005. No results are recorded in the logbooks.

@Mmasseroli I don't want to speak for every state, as each one is different --- but I would think in the vast majority of states there would be no problem registering the car and driving to the track. I know the original owner kept it registered in Colorado and it can be registered in the state I live in, North Carolina. In fact, I drove it home tonight!

Would it be possible to register this car to drive to and from the track?

  • gbutler (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@JboxerGT2 The compressor and lines going to it were removed. We no longer have those parts. fan blower/vent/defrost all work. I will plan on doing a driving video tomorrow and post later in the day.

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Hello again, The ac was deleted, was it just the ac compressor and that is it? Do you still have corresponding parts if you wish to re install ac? Fan blower works all normal vent and defrost selection working normal? Planning on a driving video, and drive by? Thx so much!!!

@pm2207 No repair at all there - that is the way it came from the factory and must be unique to the S motor if its not on the normal 8 valve cars. As for the logbooks, there are about 3 events total in each logbook with the most recent being the SCCA logbook and an event around 2014.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

I can see the PCA and SCCA log books. It looks like one was issued in 1997 and another in 2005. Can you tell us how many events are in each log book and when it was last raced?

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

In a few pictures there is a round flat spot in the middle of the oil pan? Example on photo 110.
Is that from epoxy putty repair?
Or maybe it is something unique to the “S” motor?
I’ve seen quite a few base NA oil pans and never seen that.

  • gbutler (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@uscarrera The car ran in H class. Photo 168 has the specified class — of course that was in 1997 and PCA may have changed their class designations in the meantime. For privacy reasons I don’t think I can list the name of the owner, but he was based in Colorado. I have no problem disclosing privately should you wish to give me a call at my shop, Automotive International in Charlotte, NC

  • uscarrera (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Seller can you tell me what class in PCA car ran and driver’s name?
    Thanks

Welcome to an auction of a real unicorn, after all, who has ever seen a one owner, all original paint 944S race car? It has both an SCCA and PCA logbook and has been meticulously prepared. Our shop just performed a timing belt service and also replaced a leaking valve cover gasket and installed new brake rotors and pads on all four corners. This car is truly ready to go and comes with a spare set of wheels and a few other miscellaneous items - especially of importance being the FABCAR control arms which are $2,000 for a set of new ones! I have taken it to the track after this work and it performed flawlessly. There are lots of 944 race cars out there to choose from, but most have been "ridden hard" and show a few battle scars from years of competition. Not this one! Good luck to all and let me know if anyone has questions.
