Titled from new as a Weissach-built factory race car, the 944 Turbo Cup was developed as Porsche’s first-ever “Cup” car for the new Cup Racing Series in Europe, South Africa, and North America.  These lightweight 951s came factory fitted with upgraded adjustable suspension, larger brakes, track-tuned ABS, a limited-slip differential, and a special 2.5L engine featuring a magnesium intake manifold and oil sump as well as a larger turbocharger.  This rare 1987 example, chassis 104174, had been campaigned in the French 944 Turbo Cup series up until 1990 when it was sold to a new owner and registered as a road-legal vehicle.  Accompanied by extensive French documentation, a racing logbook, and owner’s manuals, this authentic 944 Turbo Cup is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Munich, Germany showing approximately 50k kilometers (31k miles) on the odometer.

Compared to a standard 944 Turbo, the Cup version was outfitted with a lightweight fiberglass hood, hood pins, manually operated mirrors, a sunroof delete, rear wiper delete, and additional seam-welds throughout the length of the unibody chassis. Presented in Guards Red (indischrot), this 951 was completely refinished in its original color during a bare metal respray in Germany about three years ago. It was discovered during this time that the left rear fender had been replaced at some point.  The car rides on a set of factory 16”x8” and 16”x9” magnesium phone dial wheels dressed in three-year-old Yokohama semi-slick performance tires. Some minor stone chips are noted on the front, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin is stripped for weight savings apart from a dashboard, door panels, and headliner.  Racing equipment includes a Nomex Recaro bucket seat, Sabelt 6-point safety harness, a full roll cage, Sparco steering wheel, a boost control knob, and a rare original halon fire suppression system. All gauges and accessories are said to be working properly, while the seller notes some safety equipment may need to be updated for racing per FIA standards.

The 944 Turbo Cup features a special Weissach-tuned 290 HP 2.5L engine with a magnesium intake manifold and oil sump as well as a larger turbocharger and performance exhaust system.  The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle with a 40% limited-slip differential and oil cooler.  The Turbo Cup also featured larger cross-drilled brakes with specialized ABS tuning as well as an adjustable track-tuned suspension.  The engine was rebuilt by marque specialist Telkamp as documented in a €7,400 invoice which included the installation of a new turbocharger and clutch.  Only 1 hour of use has been logged on the engine since its rebuild and the seller notes the tamper-evident seal on the airflow sensor from SONAUTO (general French importer for Porsche and organizer of the Cup racing series in France) remains intact as a testament to the car's originality.

This sale will include the original owner's manuals and a collection of records, invoices, and documentation. The sale price will include shipping to the port of New York, Los Angeles, or Miami, while customs clearance is the responsibility of the buyer. Do not miss this incredible opportunity to own a factory-built Porsche 944 Turbo Cup with authentic racing provenance.

Well, I am assuming it didn’t mean the reserve. Too bad, though in my opinion it is worth more.

I did own a 944 Rothman’s and raced at Laguna Seca about 5 years ago. No turbo, low power, but almost impossible to slide off track. A truly superb handler! With about 140 more hp and more tire, etc, this should be very fast and fun. And, inexpensive to maintain vs. a competitive 911.

@Silver930 Thank you. Not unusal for race cars...

  • Silver930 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

So any details on these cars that make them unique and special. The steering feel at speeds with the lack of power steering really is noticable.
I love the roll-up windows too and no sunroof.
    Simplify everything.

Surprised this isn’t at twice the amount. A bona fide factory competition car, would be great for vintage and club racing events, HPDE, etc.

Thank you to all bidders. I would like to remind that the 1986 944 Turbo Cup car was sold on this platform, a month ago for $135000. I´m very very far down from this ammount! So please bid with confidance. You can make it!

@Silver930 Thank you silver. It looks like you know what is here on sale.

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@CanadaRS Thank you for your request. The title (Certificate De'Imatricualation) as shown in picture 187 is a correct French title. Yes it is possible to transfare it to a German title. As this moove dosen't make sence to me and it doesn´t influence the export to any where, if you would like to have it, I can do so. But all fees would be on you. As I mantioned in previous comment there are different options to ship to Canada. Plase see my former comment to this question. I´m very sorry not to be able to request a quote to Vancouver, as the shipping company is closed (we have 9.15 PM). I can also ship to Vancouver. I assume the costs shouldn't be much higher as to Los Angeles. So you have only to pay the extra fare from LA to Vancouver. I hope this helps you in the last minutes. Best

  • Silver930 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

These Turbo Cups are a bargain still but I suspect not for long as the cats out of the bag how special they are.

  • CanadaRS (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@Ferry so no German title? If not can you confirm that you can get one prior to shipping?
The French "title" does not look correct. Isn't that just a compliance certificate issued by FIA?
Regarding shipping, is it in a container or a roll on? would you also commit to shipping to Delta Port in Vancouver BC Canada?

@peterkaczynski Thank you Peter. Don´t be exided. As you are a lucky owner of a PORSCHE 944 Turbo Cup, you know the value of this rare cars. As I mantioned the reserv is low (regarding to the one sold a month ago). It is a great opportunity to own a very special race car, one with title, well documented, in very good condition and road legal. Fast reliable, easy to handle and very well come to any event. I don´t think there will be in forseeabale time one more on the market. Let´s see where she goes. Best

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@uscarrera Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, as I'm located in Germany, I'm not familiar with US custom regulations. As I mentioned previously, you should call US custom and border protection. Hope you get the information in time, to bid. Best

    Hello everybody
The last 10 hours started. I‘ll be ready for questions and information. Please feel free to contact me.
May I encourage all bidders to bid with confidence. This car is unique and in incredible good condition for a race car. Please keep in mind: One month ago 1986 Turbo Cup (no ABS, no Limited slip, no big brakes only 250 HP and so on) was sold for US$ 130,000! The reserve for this highly developed later model is far lower!
Hope someone realises this unique opportunity. Good luck

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Bg57gt4 Thank you for your request. Yes there is a title as I mantioned and as you can see in picture 187. The car was registered in France. As far I know it shouldn't be a problem to register this gem in the US. Regarding to customs I have no information. I think it's easier for you to ask custom and border protection. Hope this helps. Best

  • Bg57gt4 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Pardon my ignorance buying a previously owned car from Europe. Is there a title? Will registering the car in the US be possible? Or is it strictly a track situation in the US? And do you happen to know what customs fees might cost? Thank you very much, GLWTA!

@Swiftmotoring Yes. There is a new set (f/r) of the big cross drilled brake discs and a new distributor . I can support the lucky buyer with the contact to 4-5 shops, specialized of 944 Turbo parts.
The support is very good and regarding to other race cars very cheep.

  • Swiftmotoring (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@Ferry. Very Cup Car, are any spares included with the Turbo?

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Shutterbug_kk Sorry I forgot. Yes, the sale includes also shipping to London.

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Shutterbug_kk Thank you for your interest on this particular car. Generally there is the possibility to drive the car to England with German license plates. But I recommend, to clear all kind of bureaucracy problems by a phone call. Please push the „contact seller“ button and I‘ll be happy to forward you my phone #. Look forward.

  • Shutterbug_kk (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Amazing race car - would you consider shipping it to London (UK)? Does the sale of the car need to be registerred in Germany if I want to drive it back to the UK? Many thanks, KK

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Ksdaoski You are very wellcome. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for any further details. Best

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Porsche416 Thank you for your patience . I received the following information from the shipping company:
    1. Shipping in a 20ft container ( only this car) additional US$ 2500 of the sale price.
    2. Shipping in a 40ft container ( two cars) additional US$ 2000 of the sale price.
    3. Shipping in 40 ft container (four cars) US$ 1550 additional of the sale price
    But!!!:
we have to wait until there will be a second or three other cars to be shipped to Montreal.
They told me that version 2 might happen in foreseeable future but for version three chances are very low.
I might say that the reserve, regarding to 944 Turbo Cup cars, sold in the last six month, is so low, this additional shipping doesn’t count at the end.
Hope this helps you to bid courageous. Best

  • Ksdaoski (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

@Ferry 100% I was wrong! Didn't catch the warning line at the beginning of the video, but saw the mark at the end of the video and it looked like a needle! Thanks for confirming!

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Ksdaoski Thank you for your bid and request. Good eye! It only looks like the red line is at 7.000. It is at 6.500. But it’s not limited just a worning mark. As a Turbo, this engines don’t need high revs. The 290 HP and great torque come from the KKK 27 turbocharger. Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Ksdaoski (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Looks like the tachometer is just pegged at 7k rpms, regardless or actual revs?

Great car! Must be awesome to drive, but is will be beyond my budget I think. So I watch and I am happy that I have my normal '87 944 with less than 50k miles!

  • Racer 2 yearsago

Great to see a car like this here! I was racing in the German 944 Turbo Cup 1987 where I finished as Vice Champion. A lot later I drove these cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Very fast, reliable and easy to handle on such a difficult track. Especially with the ABS and the suspension of 87 onwards and the French 290 hp-kit. Difficult to find a good one without accident, my 87 car had one. Nevertheless I should have bought it, maybe someone finds it. Happy bidding!

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Porsche416 Yes the suspension is as original but upgrated. The suspension of the cup cars were upgrated year by year. In 1990 the French series received the last and best version. So this is what is now in the car with the edition of the small distance springs. On those days they were not available. Sorry for my poor English. Hope this clears your question.

  • Porsche416 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Thanks for the response. The suspension is original or has it been rebuilt?

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@Porsche416 Thank you for your request. Yes, engine and transmission are original but the engine is totally rebuild. Gearbox was open but there was no need to replace anything except of third gear synchro. This gem was treated like my eye. Therefor I would never do roll on roll of! She comes in container! The additional fair to Canada, if there is one, I have to check with the shipping company. Please alow me to inform you on Monday. Best

  • Porsche416 (registered bidder) 2 yearsago

Just to clarify as I may be misreading the details. The engine, transmission and suspension are all original but the engine has been rebuilt? Or have the factory upgraded suspension been replaced as well? Also in terms of the shipping, would that same offer apply shipped to the Port of Montreal here in Canada? I assume this would be roll on roll off shipping

  • OSI 2 yearsago

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@peterkaczynski Yes. Regarding to the repaint, you are wright. Everything else is original beside upgraded suspension, boostcontrol and instrument. The reserve is closer to earth than to the moon and way below the last sale of a 1986 one.
You are realy lucky to own such a grate gem.

  • peterkaczynski 2 yearsago

@ferry well it can’t be 100% original if it’s been repainted, nonetheless it’s a beautiful example, as a cup car owner (Dicom #89) I was genuinely curious about the carpet and center console, hope this one goes to the moon

  • Ferry (seller) 2 yearsago

@peterkaczynski Thank you for your request. As all French Cup Cars were delivered, for weight reasons, without carpet, and also because this one is 100% original, she comes without carpet and centerconsole. But for an additional amount of $ 20 I can deliver a centerconsole.
    Best

  • peterkaczynski 2 yearsago

Sweet deal that shipping is included in the sale, wonderful example!

did this vehicle come with carpets or an armrest & center console? (The one where the radio would have been on a standard 951)
