The Porsche 944 S debuted in 1987 featuring a new inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and a host of additional modifications to increase performance. This inaugural year example comes finished in Black over a matching leather interior and was acquired by the seller in 2022 after being kept in storage by the previous owner for over 10 years. Previously sold on PCARMARKET, this 944 S is now being offered for auction once again as the initial buyer failed to complete the transaction.

This 944 S comes finished in Black and rides on factory 16” Phone Dial alloy wheels dressed in new Yokohama tires. Exterior details include pop-up headlights, integrated fog lights, and a rubber spoiler attached to the glass rear hatch. The seller suspects the lower rockers to have been previously refinished, and additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, the cabin is appointed with black partial leather upholstery and features a removable sunroof panel with an electric tilt feature. Additional equipment includes an elevated hub steering wheel, a rear window wiper, and a central locking system. The seller notes a Clifford alarm system was installed and recently removed although the small toggle switch in the shifter console remains.

Powering this 944 is a 16-valve DOHC 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that sends 190 HP to the rear wheels via a desirable 5-speed manual transmission. This front-mounted engine setup allows for a nearly perfectly balanced car, and updates for the 944 S include progressive springs for improved handling, larger anti-roll bars, strengthened wheel bearings, a more powerful brake servo, and improved Bosch DME programming with dual knock sensors. The seller adds that a limited-slip differential was installed by a previous owner and fluids have been refreshed under current ownership.

This sale will include a certificate of registration.

The seller would like you to know: "This car was my winter of 2021 project. I have a heated 40 by 60 barn with a lift and many tools. I build 997 engines in retirement. My style is to buy good parts, cut no corners, read Clark's Garage, and work slowly. The buyer is getting a really nice running low mileage 944S.”

@AnyOldIron. I would have to agree with you on this. The seller went 95% of the way preparing the car but to have such a big mechanical ticket item hanging out there really hurt the final price. I have an ‘88 NA with 67k (and working air) and love see the 944s getting some long deserved love.

  • AnyOldIron (registered bidder) 9 months, 1 weekago

@stunistu I think if the AC has been operational the car would have hit the $15k mark. I'd have been a bidder close to that. It's a "non negotiable" for most folks, me included.

Wow, I got screwed. Lesson learned people do not care about all the mechanical work that gets done.

I believe the dash needs to be removed to access the evaporator and the o-rings for the inlet and exit lines. A good independent technician should do this. other people have estimated around $2K to do it.

  • AnyOldIron (registered bidder) 9 months, 1 weekago

Can seller proffer his opinion as to what it will take to get the AC working. Very interested but that’s a “must have”.

  • stunistu (seller) 9 months, 1 weekago

Just to put this mileage question to bed I just went through all the records and I have a signed statement from the previous owner that the actual mileage at the time of sale to me was 60,002 miles. It is on a State of New Hampshire Document.

  • Aktifspeed 9 months, 1 weekago

I’ll add that I can verify the mileage as well because I went through the sellers paperwork (which goes back to the original owner) when I was looking at purchasing the car. There is a clear trail up to the indicated 60K miles.

  • Aktifspeed 9 months, 1 weekago

I’ll copy my comment below from the last auction as everything I wrote is still valid:

“I have driven this car in person and it would be in my garage if my wife had not fallen for the charms of the 997 series 911's (lucky me...). I know the seller is absolutely meticulous in his work and takes pride in all of his craftsmanship to restore Porsches to their former glory. This particular 944S runs tight, smooth, and I remember my wife commenting on how rattle-free our drive was for a car that rolled off the assembly line in '87. Bid with confidence as I haven't seen another one this clean and well-sorted anywhere else. GLWA!”

  • stunistu (seller) 9 months, 1 weekago

The A/C does not work at this time. I spent $1500 on new parts from Griffths including new compressor, condenser, drier and the lines into and out of the condenser. It was working this Spring until a leak developed.
The mileage is correct. The previous owner's record of repairs (general maintenance) confirm this.

Beautiful car. So does the AC now work or is it still not working? Any confirmation of the mileage question? Thank you.

Good morning. I will respond to KeenAutos first. There are records from the previous owner that verify that the mileage was 60K when he put the car in storage about 11 years ago.
The cruise control cable is missing the securing end piece allowing it to fall out of its socket. It does work when connected.
The timing belt is new. The water pump and belt rollers have less than 10K miles on them. All were checked and were fine.
    All electrical including lighting work.
No issues with cv joints and wheel bearings.
The car is readfyb for a long distance road trip to the best of my knowledge.
Now to rh15 comment about the title. The state of Maine does not issue a Title for any cars that are this old. The back side of the registration card serves as the "title" in the change of ownership process.

  • rh15 (registered bidder) 9 months, 1 weekago

Your 944 looks incredible, and is very well presented! Can you explain the title status in the ad shown as 'Registration'? Do you have a clean title?

  • KeenAutos 9 months, 1 weekago

    Good day,

I’m a bit skeptical of the stated mileage. I see the odometer digits are slightly out of alignment. This is a typical characteristic of an odometer that has either been rolled back or serviced. I also know that the 944’s have a history of odometer gear breakage. Is there any records in the history showing Speedo/odometer service and does they work? Also I see the cruise control cable is disconnected from the control module. Does the cc work? Any history of the timing belt and related components being changed? Other than what was mentioned about the a/c, and what was shown in the video, does all the lighting work? Are there any issues with the cv joints or wheel bearings. If a person was to fly in and drive it across the country, is there anything about the car that would need immediate repairs?

    Thanks in advance.

No idea why the original buyer flaked but having seen and ridden in this car, it's the real deal and I'd drive it anywhere.

I've owned a few 80's water cooled Pcars, including '44s and 928s. I'd say less than 10% have pristine, uncracked dashes and maybe 10% have their original radios and 30% have unblemished seats and upholstery.. That makes this one pretty special. Even the sunroof works!

As the saying goes, one of the most expensive cars you can buy is a cheap Porsche! There WAS some deferred maintenance on this car when purchased by the seller but the great thing was that it sat in a barn during that down time, and sat in another barn while everything was addressed, thus saving the next buyer $ and down time!

GLWS, someone will get a very nice low mileage 944 and just maybe the car of their dreams.

@subere Good observation. The leather is not torn in any way. That section of the seat back has bent outward just a bit. you can push it back in place easily. A little adhesive would probably fix it.

  • stunistu (seller) 9 months, 2 weeksago

@subere No leakage around the rear hatch and no rattles/squeaks. Smooth operation.
Winning bid last time was $18K.

  • subere (registered bidder) 9 months, 2 weeksago

Photo 69 appears to show a vertical split in the leather of the driver's seat. Can you clarify?

  • subere (registered bidder) 9 months, 2 weeksago

Any issues with leakage around the hatch?
What was the winning bid from the prior auction?

  • jab7106 (registered bidder) 9 months, 2 weeksago

I personally know the seller and have can attest to the high degree of skill and dedication he takes in rebuilding and refurbishing Porsche cars, specifically resurrecting bore scored/IMS destroyed 996/997 engines. He has put the same degree of dedication and meticulousness into this 944 build.
    Bid with confidence.

Welcome back to this listing. The winning bidder from the previous bidding backed out without ever seeeing the car. I would like new bidders to spend a l
ittle time viewing the one page listing of all the regular and preventative maintenance done on this car. Many of these projects would cost big money in the future. The A/C worked last Fall after spending $1500 on new parts from Griffths. The A/C was working this Spring but something failed leaving a puddle of refridgerant/oil under the passenger side. It could be an O-ring or the evaporator.
The winning bidder is getting a perfect dash/interior, well sorted, and proper driving/handling car.
