Now available for auction is this 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe finished in Black over a black interior.  Equipped with the desirable G50 5-speed manual gearbox, this 1988 example was first registered in New Jersey and has most of its life in Delaware and Georgia.  This 911 features front and rear spoilers, Carrera side graphics, and classic Fuchs wheels.  Having undergone a recent engine-out service including the installation of a new Sachs clutch, this beautiful 1988 Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Tennessee while showing just over 71k miles on the odometer.

This 911 is finished in Black and sports gold Carrera graphics along either side as well as front and rear spoilers.  The seller reports the front and rear decklids to have been refinished under previous ownership along with the driver's side quarter panel between the wheel and the door. Noted imperfections include small blemishes atop the passenger front fender and below the passenger rear quarter window, stone chips on the hood, and some general signs of road-going wear.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This 911 rides on 16” Fuchs wheels dressed in BF Goodrich tires.

Inside, you will find a nicely preserved black interior featuring black floormats with gold Carrera embroideries as well as an original Blaupunkt Reno radio.  Other features include power-adjustable seats, power windows and door locks, A/C with climate control, and an electric sliding sunroof.  All gauges and accessories are reported to be fully functional including the A/C.

This Carrera carries an air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine producing as much as 217 HP and 195 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a sought-after G50 5-speed manual gearbox.  Newer Bilstein Sport shock absorbers are equipped, and a major service is reported to have been carried out within the last 1k miles including the replacements of ignition components and the clutch slave cylinder.  More recently in preparation for sale, a full engine-out service was performed including a new Sachs clutch, "S" oil hose, belts, valve adjustment, and new fluids.  Photos of the undercarriage and recent service are provided in the gallery.

This sale will include a toolkit, air compressor, and a clean title.  With its G50 gearbox, major recent service, and sought-after styling, this Carrera may very well be the air-cooled Porsche you have been searching for.

@Johnbugg @Johnbugg Hi John, Did you look at the car? I believe you recently bought the beautiful Carrera couple months ago for $55K. If you are not bidding can you comment how this car compares to the one you bought? Good/Bad?

  • Karose (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Keith, 7am and the bids are warming up.... I know Robert wants to drive this one up, but I'm kinda hoping we let Richard Branson enjoy the stratosphere alone today:-)

@Mjop There are no anomalies in the Carfax. The service records match the Carfax mileage and dates. I bought the car as an original miles vehicle. Quite often people buy nice cars and then don't drive them for whatever reason.

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Mjop NO - The car has not been in a front-end accident. If you notice the original VIN sticker is still on the hood as are the other stickers. I have no idea why the option sticker is not there. Are you absolutely sure that they put it there in 1988?

There are also two pictures inside of the nose of the car to show how nice the sheet metal is.

  • Mjop 2 years, 9 monthsago

Also, Car looks great. I see the option sticker is missing under the bonnet. Was it in a front end accident? Thanks in advance

  • Mjop 2 years, 9 monthsago

Is the mileage genuine? Some strange segments according to Carfax like listing only 1000 miles in the last 16 years? Any other documentation on mileage? Thx

This car has a Serious 1975-Carrera vibe going for it with the benefit of the Motronic 3.2 and a G-50 . . . . I’d be up for it if I didn’t already have an M491 that I love. GLWA - it looks like a real gem.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@drivenmanmotors LSD was an option. Code is M220.

Originally you could lift the bonnet and there would be a white sticker listing the option codes. It would be near the underside of crest.

Based on picture 47 someone removed it or repaired that area.

Pictures 95 & 96 argue against an LSD.

Another method of checking requires jacking up the rearend. Spin one wheel and then check what direction the other rear wheel is moving.

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@pm2207 I hate to admit it, but I don't know. I do not see it on the COA. Would it be listed separately? Was that optional or standard in 1988?
Is that designated anywhere else on the car or any other visual clues?

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Does it have a LSD?

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Karose Good evening. I don't know if I will have time to get that done before the end of the auction or not.

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Sundaysunday Yes - they are a relatively recent addition

  • Karose (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Hello Robert, Thank you for your comments below especially on the powertrain but wondering if you can validate the condition with compression/leak down test results?

@Johnbugg Good morning. I enjoyed speaking with you. Will see you this afternoon. When you called earlier I was on the line with another customer out of Georgia asking about looking at the car.

  • Johnbugg (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Have tried calling no answer and a mail box that will not take messages!

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Johnbugg There is no rust! Looking at that picture the only thing I see one might think is rust is just a little bit of road grit sitting on the lower lip of the quarter panel. That picture is inside the driver's quarter panel to show no signs of previous damage.

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Johnbugg Good evening. Give me a call in the morning and I will be happy to make an appointment for you on Saturday. PCar does not allow posting phone numbers, so go to our website and call that number. It forwards to my mobile. Driven Man Motors dot com

@pm2207 Good evening. The cold start video and pictures of the records were submitted to PCar a couple of hours ago. I read through the records. It is practically all routine service plus our engine out service. No signs of any major repair. There is no puff of smoke on startup. Engine is smooth and mechanically quiet.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@drivenmanmotors Thank you for the information. I look forward to the cold start video and service records.

I’ve seen plenty of 3.2 engines require top end rebuilds in the 60-80k mile range. Valve guide wear. Bottom end is usually good to 100-120k.

I’m not saying your car needs it.

All of these concerns would be alleviated by 3hrs of labor and compression/leak down numbers.

  • drivenmanmotors (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@pm2207 Good afternoon. Well that's a goodly number of questions :-)

We performed the service in house. I have an 81-year-old Porsche mechanic who knows the air-cooled 911 engines inside and out.

Did not perform compression or leak down

No reason to put valve guides or valves in an engine with this low miles and in this condition

Have not noticed any oil consumption issues. This is a classic car dealership and the longest drive I have had in the car is the two hours when I drove it home. It performed flawlessly.

    No oil leaks

No smoke on startup. Will add cold start video soon

    No transmission repair ever needed.

No transmission related issues noticed at all.

We replaced the clutch during the engine out service merely because that is what one would expect. The clutch we replaced was an excellent condition. I actually saved that clutch in case I ever needed a replacement in my own 911!

Will add images of the service records.

I believe there were three previous owners.

    Thank you,

    Robert

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Hi.
Who performed the engine out service?
Do you have any compression/leak down numbers?
Have you put new valves or guides in the cylinder head?
How much oil does it consume? Any oil leaks? Smoke on startup?
Any transmission repair ever performed? Does it pop out of 2nd or 3rd gear under heavy braking?
I reviewed all 93 photos and did not see any uploaded service records. Are you saying the carfax report is your service record?
How long have you owned it? How many previous owners?
    Thanks
