This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa is finished in Gemini Blue Metallic and comes factory equipped with optional Sport Seats, Sport Shock Absorbers, Fuchs alloy wheels, a short-shift gear lever, and a limited-slip differential paired with its 5-speed G50 manual transmission. It was acquired by the seller in 2014 and underwent a complete restoration which was carried out over the next 4 years including a bare metal repaint, new suspension and brakes, an engine and transmission rebuild, a new A/C system, and a custom Saddle leather interior. This 911 has been driven approximately 2k miles since the completion of the restoration and is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Florida while showing under 99k miles on the odometer.

This 911 was completely disassembled and sandblasted before being refinished in the classic 1970s Porsche color of Gemini Blue Metallic to match the owner’s 1973 Porsche 911S. The removable Targa top was rebuilt by Dave Brown and some subtle modifications were made including a polished stainless-steel roll bar and matching headlight rings. Other equipment includes a front valence with a chin spoiler and integrated fog lights, a fixed rear Carrera spoiler, a polished tailpipe, and factory 16” Fuchs alloy wheels. New Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires were mounted in January 2023 and the exterior is preserved with clear paint protection film on the front bumper cover and the forward portion of the hood. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin has been completely redone with new Saddle leather upholstery as well as a black leather dashboard and rear speaker shelf, new custom carpeting, and a re-covered leather steering wheel. Accessories include optional Sport Seats with electric height adjustment, a short-shift gear lever, custom Coco floor mats, a central locking system, power windows and mirrors, a heated rear window, automatic heater control, climate control, and a HiFi sound system paired with an original Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio. The seller notes the A/C system has been overhauled, and all gauges and accessories remain fully functional.

Rated at 217 HP, the air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine has been rebuilt by Gulf Performance along with the 5-speed G50 manual transmission which sends power to the rear wheels. This 911 came factory equipped with an optional limited-slip differential and Sport Shock Absorbers, and the seller notes that the suspension and braking systems were replaced during the restoration. The car is said to have been regularly serviced since the restoration and all corresponding records are included with the sale.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, an extensive collection of records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This Porsche was purchased for my wife with the goal of a complete restoration and slight retro mods. to match our 1973 Gemini Blue Metallic 911S.  Unfortunately, she only drove it on a few occasions and opted for a Macan.  It has been driven less than 2000 miles since completed and came in first place in the one concours event we entered.  This car has always been stored in my climate-controlled warehouse and regularly exercised.”

Man, wish I were able to bid on this gem, just not in the cards right now. This is one of the best G50 Targas I've seen in a long time. Virtually a brand new Carrera for a fraction of what it would cost to get it in this shape. GLWA

Thanks again for all the positive feedback. As I had mentioned earlier we owned a 1973 Gemini Metallic Blue 911S Targa. It has always been one of our favorite Porsches, and re-imagining it in the more contemporary 1988 was truly a labor of love.

  • Silver930 (registered bidder) 11 monthsago

Funny I have been trying to find a 2014 > 2016 Gemini Blue or some newer Targa in this color for a buddy of mine. No luck yet 1 year in but I am going to send this 88 targa over maybe he will come back to the Roots of Aircooled Porsches again and Bid. Very nice car I must say.

  • area901 (registered bidder) 11 monthsago

Beautiful with no corners cut apparently. The stainless rollover bar is the way they were originally done on the earlier cars and in my opinion always looked far better than the later anodized ones, but that's just me. I doubt one will see another build of this caliber with such practical tastes incorporated any time soon.

    I love it!

@BamBam - good lord that's a beautiful job you did. Love the Targa bar polished, really accents the wheel lips. One of the finest interiors that I've seen on an air-cooled Carrera in a long time...compliments the Gemini Blue so well. This is going to be a raucous final bidding frenzy...GLWA!

    Hi SocalRS
1.Good catch on on paint work. I had lent the owner of body shop quite a bit of money and he deducted around 11,000 from his bill. He is an incredible painter and body man and a lousy businessman.
    2. All of the mechanical work was done by Gulf Performance and all of the parts used were OEM. I believe he purchased everything from Champion Porsche in Pompano Beach Fl.
    3. I have pages of invoices from Gulf Performance showing everything he purchased. His business was adjacent to the body shop and interior shop, and he sourced and purchased most of the parts for the restoration. Vinny, the owner passed away a few years ago and Gulf Performance closed along with the Body shop. Only Charlies Custom upholstery remains in business.
    4. The roll bar cover is original to the car (see the before pic of the car on the lift), The paint was removed and the cover was polished and than lightly brushed. It can certainly be refinished if desired.
    5. The Blaupunkt Reno SQR46 is the original unit that came with the car. I will include the re-build invoice from BC electronics
located in Levittown Pennsylvania . I recently purchased a new rear speaker set from Champion Porsche. That receipt will be included.
    6. The first video shows a pic. of the exhaust with the car running engine cold. I am away for the weekend and the car is in my warehouse. I will try my best to get back there Monday and do a cold start with my I phone camera trained at the exhaust.

  • SocalRS (registered bidder) 11 monthsago

    Few more questions:

    1. $7500 from body shop receipt is for the full glass out paint? Seems extremely low unless I'm missing something?
    2. Any aftermarket or modification to the engine rebuilt or all OEM parts and spec?
    3. Any receipts for the interior overhaul? Curious the cost.
    4. The chrome roll bar was it refinished from original or new/aftermarket? Curious how it was done and if can be revert.
    5. Any details on HiFi audio system?
    6. Can you post another cold start video? Specifically demonstrating engine/tail pipe cold then quick start in continuous roll?

Thank you again for this amazing offer and quick and detailed responses. I imagine it'll go bonkers in the end. GLWA

  • BamBam (seller) 11 monthsago

jccaro Thanks for the question. The interior is not factory spec as far as the leather and carpeting. I chose a leather and the upholstery shop (Charlies Custom Upholstery) ordered it in bulk and hand cut and stitched the entire interior including the rear folding seats, dashboard and rear parcel tray. There are no vinyl areas. The carpeting in the cabin and frunk is thicker and softer than factory. Please see pictures of the interior.

  • jccaro (registered bidder) 11 monthsago

You mention “custom “ referring to the interior. Are the leather and carpet OEM spec?

Hello Dsscpa00. When the car was stripped down to the bare metal we noticed a small rust spot on the lower inside of the right fender. I had the body shop cut out this very small area and weld in a metal patch. There was no previous damage at all to the car. The repair was done meticulously with no bondo or fillers. The car was then sprayed with a coating to prevent rust then primer, paint and clearcoat. A paint meter depth gauge shows consistent depths on all areas of the body. One of the photos will show the repair on the Dynamic Auto Body invoice

  • Dsscpa00 (registered bidder) 11 monthsago

Did the body need any metal repairs once stripped? Or was it a solid no-hit car to start the restoration?

Hi JJ.Porsche. Thanks for complement on restoration of the car. To answer your questions, the car was painted by Dynamic Auto, in Pompano Beach Fl. A one man operation. He is a talented guy who also painted my 1959 Convertible D which came in first in class and first overall peoples choice at the 2019 Porsche Parade Concours in Boca Raton.
I did not keep track of the exact number of dollars spent, but looking over the invoices, I have spent over $175,000 which includes the car purchase.

What a gorgeous restoration and beautiful color spec selection ( exterior and interior ) - a couple of questions:

    1. What can you tell us about paint method and what shop did the paint?

    2. Have you kept all the receipts of the restoration, approximately what did it cost at the end of the project?

    Thank you! 🙏🏽
    GLWA!

Thanks for the question. When I purchased the car the whale tail was in place as shown in the side view picture of the car on the lift. I was told it came from the factory installed. It was removed during the restoration and then replaced on completion. I do not have an extra lid

  • area901 (registered bidder) 11 months, 1 weekago

A couple of "before" photos appear to show a stock engine cover on the car. Personally I would prefer the non spoiler look but this truly is a beautiful transformation you have come up with. I especially like the stainless look on the targa hoop. By chance is the stock deck lid available with the car?

There is one side view picture with the Porsche on a lift. This picture was taken the day I purchased it in its original color of Venetian Blue. The current color is 330 Gemini blue metallic.
    Thanks for your interest.

That polished roll bar, on an ‘88, is hardly subtle.

    It’s a fantastic looking G50 Targa, and I drive an ‘89 w- 195 K mi .

Will be fun to see how this one does 🤓
