Up for auction is this 1988 Porsche 928 S4 finished in Venetian Blue Metallic over Marine Blue leather.  One of the most significant evolutionary changes for Porsche’s 928 grand touring car, the S4 generation was debuted in 1987 with revised aerodynamic styling and a new 5.0L V8 engine with four valves per cylinder.  Sold new in June of 1988 from Porsche MCL Motor Cars of Vancouver, this 928 S4 has been carefully preserved throughout its life with only 4,668 km (2,900 miles) showing on the odometer.  Acquired by the seller's family in 2017 from the car's original owner, this 928 S4 has been driven approximately 300 km since and is now being offered for auction out of Canada.

This 928 comes finished in Venetian Blue Metallic with body-colored side moldings and can be identified as an S4 model by its more rounded aerodynamic nose, updated taillights, and black polyurethane rear spoiler.  The car is said to have spent its life in temperature-controlled storage and never driven during winter months. The current owner had also applied a yellow protective vinyl wrap over the exterior upon their purchase in 2017, which was subsequently removed before the car was placed into storage.  Upon close inspection, the seller identified only a few very minor stone chips on the hood. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.  This S4 rides on factory 16” flat dish wheels with colored Porsche center crests and Yokohama AVS ES100 tires dated from 2007.

Inside, the cabin features Marine Blue leather upholstery with matching carpets and 928 S4 branded floormats. Factory features include automatic air conditioning, heated power-operated seats with driver position memory, power windows and mirrors, an electric sunroof, a digital clock, and a sound system.  The original Blaupunkt radio remains in place and the seller describes the cabin to have been very well kept with all gauges and accessories functioning properly.

The 928 S4 was introduced with a new 5.0L V8 featuring dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, Motronic (LH Jetronic) engine management, knock sensors, and two electric cooling fans.  The 4-speed automatic transmission also received slightly modified final drive ratios.  Offering an output of up to 320 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque, the new drivetrain allowed the 928 S4 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 6 seconds with a top speed over 160 MPH.  The seller notes the timing belt to have been changed in 2015 and reports an oil service was recently completed, a corresponding invoice is provided in the gallery.

This sale will include the original tools and a clean title. For any Porsche aficionado looking to add a fine transaxle sports car to their collection, this impeccably well preserved 928 S4 is not to be overlooked.

    @Dozer Hello Dozer

    The paint is original factory paint.

    The mileage on the car is in Kilometres, can you explain more what you mean by “mileage”?

    The Carfax report has an erroneous report of 6000 kms, Carfax flagged it itself as likely a clerical error, I have not gotten in touch with Carfax about these discrepancies.

    PCarmarket posted the Carfax, I am confident this is the full report.

    The only documentation we have is it being delivered to the original owner as indicated in the owners manual, which is located in the pictures. I do not believe there is an original bill of sale from the first owner.

    Thanks for your interest.

    Is the paint all original?

    I’m sorry, but I don’t understand about the “mileage” on the car or the CARFAX. Am I reading it correctly that there is no documentation of it being sold new, or no CARFAX information until 1994?

    Are you working on getting the CARFAX discrepancies corrected? Thanks.

    @Yags Hi Yags

    I did some sleuthing on the brake fluid...

    Using a brake moisture content tester it showed the best possible rating of less than 1 percent.

    It must have been changed and not reflected in the work order as it was normally monitored, or the owner being a handy individual may of bled the brakes themselves.

    Thanks!

  • Yags (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

    @Engineered ideally brake fluid should be flushed every 2-3 years as it attracts moisture. It really not a use fluid, rather than an age based change. You can push out the transaxle fluid change as that is more of a mileage based fluid, with that said it should have been changed in the last 10 years as preventative maintenance.

    @JJensen Hi again JJenson

    The wrap came off perfect, it was put on to protect the factory finish and it worked out wonderfully.

    Thanks again

    @Yags Hi Yags

    The coolant was changed during the June 30, 2015 service noted in the user manual.

    The car simply hasn’t been driven enough to change the transaxle fluid or brake fluid.

    We can drop a hydrometer in there and check if you would like to know the status of the brake fluid.

    Thanks

    Do you have any records on when the brake fluid, coolant, and transaxle were last changed? It’s a shame you do not have the original window sticker for this low mileage Beauty!

    @Hi Hello Hi

    Thanks for the insight, I called our contact in New hamburg, NY, as well went back and forth with a few emails to be sure.

    According to her, “There is duty on any commercial vehicle importation, no matter what year the car was manufactured. 2002 or 1981.” For example.

    Her best guess is this is an individual doing this themselves and maybe customs forgot to put an import tax on it which is great!

    Since she does this professionally with all proper formal documentation there is always duty.

    Another possibility is…

    “If it was a personal importation, Like Kyle Smith of Canada is bringing through his 88 Porsche to Kyle Smith of United States– like you are moving to the US, or have a vacation home.
    There is a tariff classification code ( tariff code is 9804-0035 ) Allowing the car to come in duty free with it being foreign.
    Sometimes, US Customs does not even allow. It is up to CBP discretion whether or not they allow that tariff code to be used on a personal vehicle importation”

    She confirms there will be duty to anywhere in the US.

    I don’t know the specific details of your import, maybe there is something I am missing.

    regardless, I hope you are enjoying your car :) and thanks for your interest

  • Hi (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

    @Engineered the info you have about import taxes are incorrect ; I just import a 928 from Germany , and 2 days ago it was clear by customs at the port of Houston and not import taxes had to be pay because of the 25 years or old laws in US..

    @JJensen Hello JJensen

    the tires are 2007's

    The timing belt was changed June 30, 2015

    The date of last service was February 6, 2017. A copy of the work order is in the photos #128.

    Thanks

    KS

  • JJensen (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

    Hello,
    What are the age of the tires ?
    When was the timing belt last changed ?
    Date of last service and what was done ?

  • JJensen (registered bidder) 2 years, 6 monthsago

    @Engineered Very helpful, I will bid accordingly.

  • Engineered (seller) 2 years, 6 monthsago

    @JJensen Hi JJenson

    Here is a breakdown of the process of importing to our contact in New Hamburg, NY, as far as I have learned.

    She will send a flatbed up to us in the Toronto area and have it picked up and brought to New Hamburg, NY. She will charge us for this and we would send you the bill, which is estimated at 450 USD.

    we will connect you with her and she works with you to get all the paperwork you need, usually a certified entry document stamped by US customs, an EPA and HS-7 declarations I am told, she will charge a brokerage fee of an estimated 550 USD to you, the buyer.

    The documents provided by her in brokerage will be used when you register the car in the your county, you are responsible for your local tax on this, which is different by state, and normal of any change of ownership imported or not, but the documents provided by her will be what you need to do so.

    Within 72 hours of import, she will be charged the 2.9% import fee from customs and will need that payment from you, the buyer. This fee is specific to the car being manufactured outside the USA, in Germany.
    Unfortunately the Canadian rule of no duty/import fees to cars 25 years and older does not apply in the USA, my apologies.

    Then you both will work to transport the car from New Hamburg to your location, which depends where you are from unless you choose to pick it up and drive it away.

    This is just one way that we do things, You're obviously free to do it whichever way you prefer.

    Thanks and I hope this was helpful.

    @JJensen Hi JJenson

    we can actually assist with the import.

    With the car being 25+ years old there shouldn't be import/duty fees.

    We can actually arrange for the car to be imported to an acquaintance in New Hamburg, NY. Then you can work with her to get the car to your location.

    I'll contact her and get a more concrete and accurate description of the process, and confirm the details as best as possible.

    Thanks for your interest JJenson

    @Agar Hi Agar

    I believe the Carfax's 6000km 1994 odometer reading to be a clerical error, closest maintenance records in march 16, 1994 shows 3506km, and June 30, 2015 shows 4044km respectively.

    I have submitted a copy of the maintenance book with all pages recorded to be uploaded by PCarmarket last night, they should be up soon, as well all other booklets were photographed as well.

    As for shipping to Europe, it certainly depends where, but I am told this shouldn't be an issue.

    I have the sales invoice for when my family member purchased the car .
    I do not believe we have the original window sticker unfortunately.
    The first date of registration is the 17th of June 1988.

    Thanks for your interest Agar
