This 1988 Porsche 944 comes finished in Satin Black Metallic over a Light Grey interior and features a 5-speed manual transaxle as well as an optional removable sunroof, body side moldings, automatic speed control, and a rear window wiper. It was purchased new from Langan Porsche Motor Car and has remained under the care of its original owner ever since while kept in climate-controlled storage. It was treated to a major service in 2016 and has been driven less than 100 miles per year since. This well-preserved 944 is now being offered for auction by its original owner out of New York while showing approximately 36k miles on the odometer.

This 944 is finished in the uncommon color of Satin Black Metallic (LY9Y) and features optional body side moldings, a rear window wiper, pop-up headlamps, integrated front fog lights, and a glass rear hatch surrounded by a black polyurethane spoiler. The car rides on factory 15” Phone Dial alloy wheels dressed in Yokohama AVS ES100 V-rated tires from 2003. The seller indicates the car was driven with a protective leather front bra cover during its early years and has spent most of its time in a climate-controlled storage facility. Some very small stone chips are noted on the front end and the original rear quarter panel stone guards show some cracks and fading. The seller adds that the exterior underwent polishing and paint correction in May 2023 followed by a full application of ceramic coating. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Light Grey partial leather (LQ) interior is accented by a contrasting black dashboard, upper door panels, and a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel. Equipment includes power windows, a removable electric tilt sunroof, air conditioning, automatic speed control, an alarm system, and a sound system. The seller notes an upgraded Nakamichi TD-700 cassette stereo and amplifier were installed in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The cabin is described to be in very good original condition with mild signs of wear consistent with age and mileage. All gauges and accessories are said to be working properly, although the A/C system needs to be recharged.

A naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine delivers up to 160 HP and 155 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller indicates all maintenance records are available dating back to the original owner’s purchase and a major service was performed in 2016 at 36,245 miles including new timing and balance shaft belts, pulleys and tensioners, a new water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel injectors, crankshaft sensor, and heater control valve. The DME unit was also repaired at this time along with a brake fluid flush and a gearbox and differential oil change.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals and window sticker along with a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my auction. I have owned this car since new and stored it in a climate-controlled garage.  All major maintenance is up to date since a full mechanical refresh in 2016. The car is completely stock with the exception of the period-correct upgraded Nakamichi Stereo. This museum quality example is ready to be enjoyed or preserved by her next caretaker.”

    @TDConsulting Sorry typo:

"We tried to do the "heavy lifting" back in 2016 to the tune of $6,000+ to ensure she'd be good to go for many more years. This included refreshing the fuel and electrical systems which are *STILL IN PERFECT* working order. Hopefully her next caretaker will understand what type of attention is required to preserve a vehicle of this vintage and pedigree for many more years to come!"

    How embarrassing! Thanks again!

@PEDIGREE11 Thanks for asking. The car hasn't been registered and has been in long term storage for several years. We typically would drive it once or twice a year on a dealer plate borrowed from a friend to get things up to temp on a nice day when the AC wasn't needed. If you prefer to me to say it doesn't work and will need to be serviced, that's fine.

The last time it was recharged, the AC system blew cold for the season but yes the refrigerant leaked out over the winter so there is clearly a leak. However, considering the light use in recent years we haven't recharged it lately. Our mechanic recommended it would be less expensive to recharge it annually if needed as opposed to chasing leaks on a 30+ year old system. So for us, your question of where it was leaking from was irrelevant, but I understand your point. Sorry I cannot tell you were it is leaking from exactly.

As for the rest of the car needing service, our mechanic has checked the belts every other year to make sure they are in good shape and safe to drive. She's been kept in climate controlled storage and all the rubber including the belts, seals, trim and tires have held up remarkably well. If her next caretaker plans to drive the car more regularly it would make sense to have the belts checked regularly or just go ahead and service them again for peace of mind. I'd recommend the tires be replaced for regular use as well.

We tried to do the "heavy lifting" back in 2016 to the tune of $6,000+ to ensure she'd be good to go for many more years. This included refreshing the fuel and electrical systems which are still imperfect working order. Hopefully her next caretaker will understand what type of attention is required to preserve a vehicle of this vintage and pedigree for many more years to come!

@TDConsulting it’s great that you reveal that the AC is not blowing cold however, if it just needs a recharge, why not do it yourself so you don’t have to make an excuse? Guaranteed this car needs much more than just a recharge since it hasn’t been serviced since 2016. The real question is where is it leaking from for it to need to recharge? Looks like a really nice car but it will need a full service once again since it’s been so long.

Thanks to everyone that has reached out already. I will try to answer all questions/comments as quickly and transparently as possible. Please keep the questions coming and bid with confidence!

Some notes I'd like to add:

The tires are dated from 2003. Their condition is a testament to how fresh she has been kept while in long term storage. They show no dry rot and are still soft and supple, with plenty of tread. They are fine to putt around on as we have to car shows in recent years, but with any spirited driving and/or regular use they should most definitely be replaced.

The sunroof works 100% as new.

The AC system is intact but has not been recharged with refrigerant in at least 10 years. The HVAC blower fans all work perfectly. I would expect the system to blow cold with a recharge, but I can't say with absolute certainty. Her next owner may have to do some additional sorting as they would have to with any car of this age.

  • TDConsulting (seller) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@JohnPan Thank you! Unfortunately, we are selling because we don't get to drive and enjoy her as much as we would like to anymore. Time catches up with us all eventually, and even though we still feel young at heart, climbing in and out of our cherished 944 is just not as easy as it used to be. Downsizing our lives in general has meant a shift in priorities and it's time for her next care taker to take the reins.

  • TDConsulting (seller) 7 months, 4 weeksago

@Harrdware Thank you so much! She has been out pride and joy, and was a true dream come true to own and care for.

  • JohnPan 7 months, 4 weeksago

Beautiful example. Curious as to reason(s) for selling?

  • Harrdware (registered bidder) 7 months, 4 weeksago

Now this is a nice reference example. Grateful for owners such as this one, who cherish and take care of their vehicles for posterity.
