The pinnacle of Porsche’s 944 transaxle sports car series, the 944 Turbo was launched for the 1986 model year featuring an improved aerodynamic design, disc brakes borrowed from the 911, a reinforced gearbox, external oil coolers, stiffer suspension, and a turbocharged version of the standard 944’s inline-four engine producing 220 HP. This 1988 example was originally delivered to L&W Porsche in Bernardsville, New Jersey, finished in Satin Black Metallic over a black partial leather interior. It was optioned with automatic speed control, the HiFi Sound Package, a stereo amplifier, and a removable sunroof with electric tilt. The car remained in New Jersey until it was acquired by the seller’s client in 2021 and treated to a major service including a new timing belt and spark plugs. Supported by a lifetime of maintenance history, this 944 Turbo is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York while showing approximately 42k miles on the odometer.

Compared to the standard 944, the Turbo model featured an aerodynamically optimized nose with integrated fog lights as well as a body-colored diffuser below the rear bumper. This example is finished in the rare color of Satin Black Metallic and rides on factory 16” cast alloy disc “manhole cover” wheels. Other equipment includes an optional removable sunroof, pop-up headlamps, an opening glass hatchback, “PORSCHE” logo door handles, and a black polyurethane rear spoiler. The seller notes some minor scratches and blemishes are present in the paint and there are no indications of accident damage. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

This 944 Turbo features a Black interior with partial leather seats and matching carpets. Accessories include a leather-covered steering wheel, power windows and mirrors, an electrically height-adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, cruise control, an original Blaupunkt Lexington SQR 46 radio, and a Blaupunkt equalizer amplifier included as part of the optional HiFi Sound package. Noted imperfections include minor stitch separation on the driver’s seat and warped piping on the front of the passenger seat. All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.

A turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter inline-four engine delivers up to 220 HP and 243 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The 944 Turbo featured a strengthened gearbox with a modified final drive ratio compared to the standard 944 as well as a stiffened suspension, external oil coolers for the engine and transmission, and Brembo 4-piston disc brakes borrowed from the 911. The seller indicates the car has been maintained by Porsche dealerships and reputable independent specialists since new. A major service was completed in 2021 at 29k miles including a new timing belt and associated components, spark plugs, a distributor cap and rotor, a new fuel filter, air filter, front wheel bearings, and an oil change.

This sale will include the original window sticker, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “The car runs very well. There are no squeaks or rattles, it feels and runs tight as would be expected with a 41k-mile car.”

I just had a chance to go through the service records. They go back to when the car was new. This car has an extensive service history, some of which I will post now.
While the clutch was not replaced , it was inspected not long ago when a new slave cylinder was installed.
As previously mentioned, this car has been looked after and and all needs have been addressed.

  • The_emyrean_._ (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@kmspcar1015 well said, dude. Completely concur. Wish you came up on the net sooner. Belt should be due after 3 years and to put it out there didn't mean to antagonize. Seller has done a solid job of presenting the car although it looks like some of his videos didn't get uploaded for whatever reason.

@TheVintageCarGuy Ha........".You" mentioned keeping your mouth shut? A little late for that don't you think? As far as a fair shot at the car.........You have one right now. You are more than welcome to bid away. I think that bad mouthing a car or trying to direct the way the bidding goes to suit one's own needs is in bad taste. You openly admitted that that was your intention.
This is a very honest presentation of a really nice car that runs incredibly well with minor imperfections. I believe real buyers will see that and bid accordingly. What the car sold for 3 years ago is irrelevant. Miles have been added, there is additional usage and much has been spent on making the car right and scheduled maintenance upkeep.
As I mentioned, there are no immediate needs. No belt service is due nor is any other work required.
I will photograph and post recent and important repairs but the entire service history is fully documented.
Thanks to all and good luck to all serious bidders. Bid with confidence.
NO SERVICE is currently needed. The belts have been done. Swirl marks? Saving? Please. Driving more miles is needed. Not saving. Someone please buy this car and continue to drive the hell out of it. Swirl marks? Ha...........

@mccheez As the previous owner of this vehicle, I can full-heartedly say that this 944 was my favorite driver and was a difficult decision to part with. I have four 911s that I drive sparingly and a diesel cayenne that is now too high in mileage. The 944 was my go-to, weather permitting, over the last 3 years. My decision to sell had to do with moving my mom back to the East Coast from CA, in which I needed another year-round vehicle, plus, as I mentioned, my existing Cayenne is up in miles. So, recently I purchased a 2021 Macan GTS on https://www.pcarmarket.com/auction/2021-porsche-macan-gts/ here on pcar. I can assure you that while I did put mileage on the 944, it was out of love and appreciation, not abuse. And the surface blemishes and scuffs you are referring to, many were present when I purchased it, unfortunately. In addition to the price I paid, $39K, I needed to put over another $20K into it, due to work that was needed at the time of purchase and following. I prioritized everything that was needed mechanically, and I am very glad I did, as it runs like nothing else. Also, @thevintagecarguy, while the reserve is nowhere near where my out-of-pocket, I in absolutely in no way regret the investment I made. I love this car, and I have gotten comparable satisfaction out of a few others. Whoever wins this auction should consider themselves extremely lucky. It's a head-turner but in a very understated way. In fact, I want to say it's the most enjoyable car I own to drive. I have a turbo 964, a 993 C4S and two carreras, one in the style of the 964 and another an 89 G50 targa. I love each for different reasons, but again none give the sense of relaxed-cool and complete drivability that this one does. Good luck with the auction. Mark has all the records, including the investment that was needed following my purchase of it.

Now after looking at the cars history, it is a shame that the car has not been kept up cosmetically in the last three years the way it was the first 35 years. But who knows maybe that will just make it a deal. I can bring all of that back. Still sounds like it runs well and 41k isnt a lot of miles. I’ll take a shot. I would still own it for the right money.

  • Mccheez (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@The_emyrean_._ These cars are made to run the snot out of . The love to have the snot run out of them. I own two and they both are tracked, original engines over 100k miles and get the snot ran out of them constantly. Not over rev’ed and get oil changes often. These cars some how have gotten a bad rap. They are very hearty, love to run high in the rev range. Running hard is not abused. Missing shifts, not changing oil, trying to shift too fast, hitting walls is abuse. this looks like a great car that can take being driven enthusiastically and still apprieciate, a lot, because they have been so under rated. 944 Turbos have finally taken their place as a Classic P car!

  • The_emyrean_._ (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

Last owner drove the snot out of it and is selling it right when all the major services are due again plus a ton of extra swirl marks and scratches including gauge cluster. A vin search quickly reveals the history of this car. This car is a very good candidate for saving, use, and preservation so it doesn't end up deeper into the category of the lot of 951s out there today through neglect and abuse. Then again the new owner can do whatever they want.

  • TheVintageCarGuy 3 months, 2 weeksago

Not sure it would be appropriate or fair to the seller for me to reveal that info. I'm sure he knows and can disclose it if he wants to. Besides, maybe he will give me a shot at it for a fair price if it doesn't meet reserve for keeping my mouth shut, ;-)

  • TheVintageCarGuy 3 months, 2 weeksago

@DriverM Thank you for your quick reply. The current owner , the past 3 years and 13,000 miles have not been kind to this Porsche. When sold in 2021, this 944 looked to be all but new. It now shows its age and miles. Went from a 29,000 miles collector to a 42,000 mile driver. I hope the reserve is realistic and reflects the wear. It will never garner anywhere near what it brought in 2021.

@TheVintageCarGuy I have records at my warehouse that I have to review. There is lots of documentation on the service history. I'll see if there is anything on the clutch and will advise.
There are no signs of leakage from the sun roof or trunk seals. No signs of any leaking anywhere including from the engine and transaxle. It is dry underneath and no drips from where the car was parked.
The car is in good company. Yes, that is a Diablo VT Roadster. Cool car indeed.

  • TheVintageCarGuy 3 months, 2 weeksago

@DriverM This car has some impressive stable mates.911 Targa, 356 coupe, a couple Elises. Is that a Diablo VT Roadster I see next to it?
To get more to the point regarding this auction, do you have invoices for the major service performed in 2021? Have you fpound anything regarding the clutch? Any signs of any leaking from sunroof or rear hatch? How would you describe the condition of those seals?

  • DriverM (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

    @The_emyrean_._ No LSD.

  • The_emyrean_._ (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

It most certainly is a drivers quality car now. Whoever had it these past couple of years drove the heck out of it to accumulate that much mileage in such a short time. Is this car optioned with an LSD?

  • DriverM (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@Stingray72454 It does have imperfections. It is a driver quality car. I'd rate it at a 7. No damage serious enough to require a respray. It still shows very well but it's not a show car. What it lacks in body perfection, it makes up in drivability. It's a good one.

  • Stingray72454 (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

There seems to be a lot of imperfections in the paint what would you rate the paint on this car 1-10?

@Stingray72454 I will check the date codes in the tires and advise. The AC has been converted and works well.
I have to go through the records to see if the clutch has been replaced but I can tell you it catches exactly where it should, has smooth operation and there are no indications of any wear.
There are no oil leaks or spots on the ground where it has been parked.
    Everything works as it should.
I was impressed with the drivability of this car. It’s tight with no squeaks or rattles. It drives exactly as it should.
    I hope that helps.

Hello and welcome to our 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo auction. While there are some minor imperfections on this car, it remains a very solid well running car that has an extensive service history and has no needs at all.
The left quarter panel has some scratches that are not serious enough to necessitate a respray. Photos were included.
The dashboard has a slight crack near one of the vents and the passenger seat has some shrinkage on the piping on the front of the seat.
The overall appearance is excellent and it will prove to be an excellent addition to anyones garage.
I am here to answer any questions as quickly as possible and to the best of my ability.
    Good luck to all.
