Now up for auction is this 1988 Toyota MR2 finished in Dark Blue Mica over a blue cloth interior. Introduced in 1984, the MR2 was the first rear mid-engined Japanese production car and went on to become very popular due to its small size, strong handling, and impressive fuel economy. This AW11 example was sold new in Ohio where it remained up until being acquired by the previous owner in September of 2020 and subsequently treated to a full respray, fuel and ignition system service, fluid changes, and more. Now showing just under 33k miles on the odometer, this MR2 is being offered at auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

This MR2 is finished in Dark Blue Mica (8P4) and was recently refinished in its original color along with the removal of several dents and dings throughout the body. Exterior details include a body-colored front spoiler, fiberglass side skirts, pop-up headlights, a passenger-side air intake, rear "MR2" mudflaps, black mirrors, and a fixed rear wing with integrated brake light. This AW11 retains factory 14” silver-finished alloy wheels which come mounted with 195/60 Toyo Extensa A/S tires showing date codes from 2018. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. 

The interior features deeply bolstered seats trimmed in patterned blue cloth with matching carpets, seatbelts, and leatherette upholstery on the dashboard and door panels.  The shift knob and three-spoke steering wheel are also wrapped in blue leather. Driver amenities include a cassette stereo, cruise control, power windows, and power mirrors. The original R12 air conditioning system is currently nonfunctional, and the seller notes some cracks in the dashboard as well as a torn shifter boot.  The windshield wipers also fail to return to their original position once activated, and will likely require a replacement wiper switch to address the issue.

This AW11 is powered by a mid-mounted fuel-injected DOHC 1.6L 4A-GE inline-four cylinder engine, the same unit found in the legendary Toyota AE86 Corolla Levin. As much as 112 HP and 97 lb.-ft of torque is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. The MR2 utilized fully independent MacPherson front and rear suspension along with disc brakes at all four corners. During the prior ownership since September of 2020, this MR2 received a coolant flush, oil service, a new fuel pump and filter, fuel tank cleaning, new spark plugs, ignition wires, and a replacement muffler.

This sale will be accompanied by a clean title. With its rarely seen color and low mileage, this 5-speed AW11 MR2 presents an excellent opportunity to own a vintage Japanese sports car.
