This 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco Type 2 is finished in Tornado Red over a black vinyl and grey cloth interior. An icon of the 1980s, this final US model year example was acquired by the seller in 1993 from the second owner. This example features a 5-speed manual transmission, a 1.8-liter 16-valve inline-four-cylinder engine, European-style front and rear bumpers, headlights, and side body moldings as well as a hatch spoiler, wheel arch extensions, and a rear wiper. This second-generation Volkswagen Scirocco is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York while showing approximately 141k miles on the odometer.

Finished in Tornado Red, the Type 2 features quad rectangular headlights, wheel arch extensions, a rear wiper, and a hatch spoiler. Modifications include European-style front and rear bumpers, headlights, and side body moldings, as well as the deletion of badges. This example rides on Konig aftermarket wheels that come wrapped in Yokohama Parada tires dated 2003. The seller states that the entire car was repainted in 2014 due to the driver's door and quarter panel being damaged in a parking lot. The driver’s door was replaced at the same time. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, this Scirocco presents black vinyl-trimmed seats with grey cloth inserts. This Volkswagen was factory-equipped with an optional sunroof as well as black floor mats with red VW logos. While the optional air conditioning unit has been removed, the seller notes that any A/C parts will be included in the sale. The seller observed a haze on the cluster that might be related to the treatment used to prevent dash cracking. A hole in the outer bolster of the driver’s seat is noted. An aftermarket radio is a modification. The seller reports all gauges and accessories to be working properly.

This Type 2 is powered by a 1.8-liter 16-valve inline-four-cylinder engine which produces up to 123 HP and 120 lb-ft of torque. This example currently uses Scrick 260 camshafts, a stock downpipe with a catalytic converter, and a Tectonics stainless exhaust with a Borla muffler. A Techtonics catalytic converter and the factory exhaust are included in the sale. The seller notes replacing the piston rings circa 2000. This Scirocco has been modified with H and R lowering springs, Bilstein shocks, an upper and lower front stress bar, and an OMP rear stress bar. Recent service includes a re-done brake system with rebuilt calipers, new rotors, and pads in winter 2022-2023. The timing belt is said to have been replaced within the last approximately 1k miles. The seller also notes that new springs were installed along with a new front sway bar and bushings.

This sale will include a clean title, a spare tire, sales literature, and owner’s manuals.

The seller would like you know: “I’ve always been a Scirocco-lover. I purchased this car in 1993 from the 2nd owner with approximately 60k miles on the odometer. I daily drove car up until approximately 1995 then it became a toy and has been garaged since approximately 1997. As a Scirocco-fanatic, I owned several examples including a 1981 “S” and several 16V models. A friend of mine, David Puner, wrote a 2005 New York Times op-ed piece in which he interviewed me and photographed the car. Most of the mileage on the car was accumulated before 2005. In the last 15-20 years, I have added around 10,000 miles.”

Congrats urban auto and to addresse the last comment there is tape holding a rubber piece to prevent chaffe as it vibrates against the radiator in that location.

  • garrege 9 monthsago

The upper radiator hose looks repaired with black tape. I think those hoses are not easy to come by.

@eric88911 sent you some questions via PM.

  • Eric88911 (seller) 9 monthsago

The term accident might be a bit of an overstatement- when I bought it, the car came with about a 1” deep crease that went from the center of the drivers door and then a slightly deeper maybe 2” deep into the quarter panel but it did not damage the edge of the quarter panel much if at all. Keep in mind this was 1993. Prob have a 3x5 of it somewhere ???? and until 2014 it was just patched up so it did not rust. Windows always worked, it was not a deep hit.

  • AM_BHT (registered bidder) 9 monthsago

    Any photos of the accident?
Is that over spray on the oil pan and under the car?

Great car from that “just right” era of style and great dynamics but also modern functionality and reliability, in those respects a credible alternative to an e30 BMW. Nimble FWD chassis, sweet engine, superb visibility, nice chairs, VDO gauges …

    Best of luck, John
