We are pleased to present this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster finished in Silver Metallic over a black partial leather interior. Recalling the essence of the original 356 version, the Carrera Speedster was offered for the 1989 model year only and carried on one of Porsche’s most iconic traditions.  One of only 823 examples built for the U.S., this Speedster remains one of the most collectible air-cooled 911s of all time.  This example was acquired by its third and current owner 19 years ago and has been kept in a climate-controlled garage ever since while being driven approximately 4k miles.  Accompanied by a Porsche Production Specifications certificate and maintenance records dating back to the original purchase, this Speedster has been recently serviced and is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of New York while showing just over 19k miles on the odometer.

This Speedster is finished in Silver Metallic and features a characteristic low-swept windshield, wide fenders, and distinctive double-hump rear fairings. This 911 is said to remain very well preserved having been stored on a lift and underneath a car cover throughout the current ownership, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This Speedster rides on factory 16″ polished Fuchs wheels dressed in an older set of Dunlop SP Sport 8000 tires.

Inside, you will find a black partial leather interior with full power-adjustable front seat seats trimmed in optional supple leather upholstery.  The front seats are positioned lower in the Speedster model to accommodate for the lower roofline, and the rear seats are omitted in place of a luggage compartment. Factory options include a Blaupunkt Charleston radio, cruise control, left seat lumbar support, and air conditioning.  Modifications include an upgraded MOMO steering wheel and shift knob as well as an integrated kill switch and radar detector.  The original steering wheel and shift knob will be included with the sale.  All gauges and accessories are reported to be fully functional, and the A/C system is said to have been refurbished as part of a service carried out in October of 2020.

Among the very last of the 911 Carrera models, this 1989 Speedster is equipped with an air-cooled 3.2L flat-six engine paired with a G50 5-speed manual transmission that sends as much as 217 HP to the rear wheels.  Corresponding with its wide fenders, the Speedster also shares the same brakes and suspension setup with the 930 Turbo model. An AutoThority Performance Engineering mass airflow sensor upgrade has been installed and the original unit is said to accompany the sale as well.  All maintenance records are said to be available dating back to the original purchase, and a full service was reportedly carried out in October of 2020 including changes of the engine oil and transmission fluid.

This sale will include the original owner's manuals, radio booklet, shift knob, steering wheel, airbox, toolkit, air compressor, a Porsche Production Specifications certificate, and a clean title. An essential addition to any world-class Porsche collection, this rare 911 Speedster is ready for its next owner.

@MMatus - A viewer ( Thanks Rich ) sent me a link to an article re: paint meter readings.

@MMatus - RE: Videos - PCARMarket condensed 4 videos into 2. Thanks for viewing.

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@allthingsporsches - Paint meter reading photos have been forwarded to PCARMarket, look for them soon.
A Porsche Certified Collision shop performed the testing. Readings were consistent around the car exception for the trunk lid. His comments were: the lid may have road chips repaired, the result was excellent, that only a trained eye would notice when told and there is no evidence of an accident. The numbers are what they are; but I still can't see the variation ( and I am particular ). Bid/act appropriately.
For what it's worth, I will send a photo of the underside of the trunk lid. If additional photos would be helpful, describe your preference.
To the comment - "to ensure originality" I would offer - the lid is probably original and maintained to show its originality.
Are you or a representative able to visit for a first-hand confirmation?
    Thanks,
    Mike

@MMatus tough to purchase a 1989 speedster with no paint meter readings to ensure originality

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I have forwarded 4 videos to PCAR Market including: engine cold start, exterior & interior walk-arounds. Look for them soon. Thanks for viewing, Mike

@allthingsporsches - It has been difficult to find a shop willing to fit me into their schedule for paint readings but finally found one. Believe or not it is 1 1/2 hours away. Stay tuned. Mike

  • allthingsporsches (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Can we get some paint meter readings please ?

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Kindly note additional info has been included: a photo showing the AC vent near the glove box
and all service records. Thanks for the comments, consideration and bids. Mike

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@AdamoPitaliano - I agree with your comments and drive more often with the top up because I prefer the look. Since the car is covered when not driven and has not been hit with bird droppings, I don't wash the top, I vacuum it. Enjoy your rides! Mike

  • AdamoPitaliano (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

I have enjoyed enjoyed driving our ‘89 Speedster more than any car in the barn. The noise, the reduced weight, and I much prefer the look of the Speedster over the normal Cab.

The Speedster top is for keeping you dry, if you accidentally get stuck in the rain. I check weather and only take the special cars out on nice days, like most enthusiasts. If an all weather drop top is your target, save $100K+ and get a Cabriolet! Most wont daily drive a Speedster...... even though I put more miles on this Porsche than the others in our collection.

@SMiller I had included your name in my recent response re: the glove box but it did not appear. Look for the follow-up photo. Thanks

  • Deichenb (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @MMatus Great and thank you.

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Deichenb Thanks for the tip.
The AC vent is to the right of the glove box w two white dots indicating open/close.
The angle of the photo distorted the view. I will sent a close-up photo to PCar. Thanks

  • Deichenb (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@MMatus I think the comment is referring to the white (text?) on the right side of the glovebox. Is there a sticker there? The glovebox is usually black plastic al the way across.

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@SMiller The glove box is operative w no issues. Kindly elaborate your question. To which photo are you referring?

  • SMiller (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

What's going on with the glove box door?

  • MMatus (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Turn3 Thank you very much for the comment. It is important for all to know the limitations of any product. Porsche clearly identifies the issue in its literature.
Porsche's original marketing materials for the 1989 Speedster model states:
" The 911 Speedster is designed especially for friends of open-air driving - as a nice weather car. In contradiction to the 911 Convertible, the " 911 speedster " is equipped only with a light temporary canvas top. It could lead to impairment because of draft, wind noise or water leaking into the car in the area of the temporary canvas top bearing on the body or door windows depending on operating conditions and the weather.
The 911 speedster is not suitable for automatic car washes and therefore should only be washed by hand. "
The literature also includes comments re: " Cleaning and Servicing Temporary Canvas Top " and " Avoid automatic car washes - danger of water getting into the car ". If those details are of interest, I can provide it.
During my 19 years of ownership this car was never driven in the rain. Not only was I concerned about the roof leakage but also the cleanliness and condition over time of the undercarriage and other parts. It also did not come out during the winter. Call me a neat-nick & a nut but the next owner is the beneficiary.
I look forward to providing any additional info that facilitates bidders making informed decisions about this special vehicle.

Welcome to the auction of my 1989 Speedster. It has been an absolute pleasure to own this car. Many acknowledgments and fun conversations with good people have been only two of the benefits. Unfortunately caring for several other cars and motorcycles has become somewhat of a challenge. It's time for me to downsize and offer someone else the opportunity to enjoy and drive this great car. I encourage interested folks to ask questions and visit. Best wishes, Mike
