Up for auction is this highly collectible 1989 Porsche 928 GT finished in Black over a black leather interior.  Produced from 1989 to 1991, the GT was the high-performance model in the 928 lineup with unique standard features including sport shock absorbers, Club Sport wheels, and a 5-speed manual transaxle with limited-slip differential. Confirmed by the 928 Registry as being one of only 151 North American examples built for the inaugural 1989 model year, this GT was originally purchased in Massachusetts before making its way to California in the 1990s where it remained under the care of its previous owner from 1997-2013. The previous owner is said to have been a well-known venture capitalist in Silicon Valley who was personally known by the current owner. This GT has since been relocated to Texas by the 3rd and current owner where it is now being offered for auction in strong running order having undergone approximately $8k worth of service including a timing belt, water pump, and radiator replacement within the last 4k miles.

The Black paint is said to be in great condition and is believed to be entirely original with only minor imperfections and rock chips present.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  This GT features optional side protection moldings and factory model-specific 16” Club Sport forged wheels.  This example rides on a set of Bridgestone Potenza tires that were reportedly installed about 6 years ago with approximately 20K miles of use since.

Inside this 928, you will find a black leather interior that is stated to be in great condition with no cracks in the dashboard.  Noted flaws include ripped fabric in the hatch cover, peeling doorsills, and slight wear on the driver seat bolster.  From the factory, this example is equipped with an electric sliding sunroof, power accessories, and an improved air conditioning system with rear seat ventilation.  A period-correct Alpine tape player has been installed in lieu of the factory radio and the seller reports that the passenger door lock mechanism was replaced under their ownership.  As a 1989 example, this GT is devoid of airbags and the seller confirms all gauges and accessories to be working properly except for the cigarette lighter. The air conditioning system has also reportedly been fully sorted. CARFAX shows a potential mileage discrepancy and the seller believes the odometer to have been previously replaced with approximately 40k miles displayed at this time. The true mileage is suspected to be closer to 100k.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine that produces 330 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle which is capable of accelerating this 928 from 0-60 MPH in under 6 seconds.  Offering a 50/50 weight distribution, the 928 is praised for its balanced handling which is further enhanced by the GT’s standard sport shock absorbers and ZF 40% limited-slip differential which was only offered in 1989 before the introduction of the more complex PSD differential in 1990.  Recent service is said to include new brakes, a new radiator, and A/C maintenance.  The timing belt and water pump were also both replaced within the last 4k miles.  Service records are said to be included dating back to 2000 and this GT is described by the seller as being an unmolested and well-maintained example that is ready to drive and enjoy. Recent compression test results from 2020 are listed below:

  • 1 - 185
  • 2 - 190
  • 3 - 190
  • 4 - 190
  • 5 - 185
  • 6 - 190
  • 7 - 185
  • 8 - 185

This sale will include the original owner's manuals, tools, stamped maintenance book, a collection of service records, and a clean title.  With significant performance improvements over its predecessors and unique specifications offered only during the 1989 model year, this rare 928 GT is not to be missed.

@fozzy555 - Yep. rare interference engine. I have an 86 and a 79. The 79 is non-interference, so I really care a lot less - the cost of a broken TP is FAR less catastrophic. The 86 I stay on top of.

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@JNasty I suppose that’s right. Simple enough to get done

  • JNasty (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@fozzy555 - Thanks. Sadly, means "due" per Porsche's POV today (5-6 years now vs 3 before).

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@JNasty actually two different dates. I thought they did the tb when they did the wp and radiator but I called and they said no. So tb is 2013 and 20k miles.

  • JNasty (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@fozzy555 - what's the exact DATE of the TB and WP, I know it's "4K miles?" Thanks.

@fozzy555 TPWS. Had work done on two of my 928 with Matt. First was 19k miles 1980 light blue with Pascha, second was 88 928. Very pleased with the work Matt did. Bought both cars in Austin, had them repaired and shipped to PA.

@buccicone EM8J DCC2512-- I will ask pcarmarket to post the picture as well.

There are lots of underside pics I took this morning pending too.

  • buccicone (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@fozzy555 , 4 digit number the first two is the week of production, second two the year of production (any tire past the year 2000). i.e. 4013 =40th week of 2013. The number is embossed in the area near the rim. Hope this helps.

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@buccicone sorry I do not. I am happy to go look at the tires for you.

  • buccicone (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

@fozzy555 , miles not important but age is. Do you know how to find and decipher the date code?

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@buccicone Not sure they were put on the car the day I got it in 2013 or 2014 about 20k miles ago--

  • buccicone (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

What are the date codes of the tires?

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@eloutfi Pcarmarket will be uploading the cold startup and walk around video shortly.

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@eloutfi thank you for your interest. The car is an unmolested and very original, honest example with 3 owners. In the 20k miles that I have driven it since purchase in 2013 I have done normal maintenance (oil), sorted the AC (which blows cold and hard), replaced the timing belt at least once (checking to see if I also did it in 2018), replaced the water pump and radiator and other minor items like replacing the central locking unit, the thermostat, smog pump, rack boot, shifter coupler, .

On the mileage, I was told by the prior owner that the odometer broke at some point--but it has worked throughout my ownership. If you look at the Carfax (slide 175) you will see that the mileage was at 80K on 11/28/95 and then "jumped" to 22k in 4 months on 03/02/96. It is now at 41k. From that I am estimating mileage around 100k which is the 80k plus the 20k that I have driven it.

I will try to get it up on a lift and do a start up video next week and happy to answer any other questions you have.

  • eloutfi (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

Hello I'm interested in your 89 GT. I do have a couple questions? What recent services have you done to it? Can you take some undercarriage photos showing the whole bottom on a lift? What is going with mileage? Also may you take a video of the car showing us it and a start up. Thank you and good luck with the sale.

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@ngamountains you may be right- I will check with Alpina on Monday. I have a distinct memory they told me they replaced the timing belt while they had everything out but maybe they did not.

  • ngamountains (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

I see TB reflected in image 127 from 2013, but no reference to TB at water pump replacement date cited in image 121 in 2018. Is there a TB replacement post-2013?

  • fozzy555 (seller) 3 years, 1 monthago

@JPD Please see picture 121-- mileage was 38,460 and date was 8/10/18-- radiator and other while you are in there items also completed in that service.

  • JPD (registered bidder) 3 years, 1 monthago

What was the date of t/b and w/p replacement?
