We are pleased to present this 1989 Porsche 928 GT finished in Black over a black leather interior. Produced for the model years between 1989-1991, the 928 GT filled the high-performance role in Porsche’s 928 lineup. Reported to be one of only 151 North American examples built for the model year, this 1989 GT is factory equipped with a 5-speed manual transaxle, limited-slip differential, Sport Shock Absorbers, and 16” Clubsport wheels. In recent years, this 928 has undergone substantial refurbishment including a full high-quality respray, new interior trim, and a complete rebuild of the engine and transmission. Now with approximately 60k miles showing on the odometer, this rare and highly collectible 928 GT is being offered for auction by its seller out of Florida.
Under previous ownership within the last several years, this 928 is said to have been completely refinished in its original color of Black by renowned specialist Rob Roberts. The paint is said to remain in exceptional condition and the driver’s door is reported to have been recently refinished for cosmetic purposes (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery). The factory optioned door protection moldings have been removed and this example retains its original 16” Clubsport wheels which have been recently refinished, anodized, and dressed in new tires.
Prior to the seller’s purchase in 2020, the black leather interior was refreshed with new driver’s seat bottom upholstery, a refurbished LCD clock display, and an overhaul of the air conditioning system. All new carpeting was recently installed by the current owner along with the replacements of the shift boot and knob, a window regulator, and both door sill guards. Factory options include a power sunroof and extended air conditioning for the rear seats. The original Blaupunkt “Reno” radio remains in place and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.
The 5.0 L V8 engine in the 928 GT was specially tuned from the factory to produce up to 300 HP, an increase of approximately 10 HP over the standard 928 S4 of the time. This model was also offered with a 5-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential as standard equipment. This particular example has been further optioned with Boge Sport Shock Absorbers for a stiffer and more responsive ride. The engine and gearbox are said to have been previously rebuilt by Greg Brown of Precision Metrowerks in California including new cylinder heads, bearings, a timing belt, and water pump for the engine. The brake lines, steering rack boots, and suspension bushings have also been replaced under previous ownership. More recently, a major inspection and service were carried out in December of 2020 at a cost of over $4,500 which included a new throttle body and Bosch alternator. This 928 is reported to be in exemplary running order at this time, just waiting to be enjoyed.
This sale will include original tools, a Porsche air compressor, spare tire, and some service records. CARFAX suggests that this vehicle was stolen in 1994 and was subsequently issued a branded title, however, the seller states this to be incorrect and that the vehicle will be accompanied by a clean Florida title. For any collector of transaxle Porsches, this rare and highly desirable 928 GT is not to be overlooked.

@JNasty When the seller lists a car on either PCarmarket or BAT the creative writer puts together the listing and writes up the description of the item based on fact and a phone interview with seller. During the interview I mentioned that Carfax was incorrect in it's description of this car and that "Accident/Damage Severe Damage " was incorrectly noted. The author of this Listing noted that the seller does not agree with the Carfax Report. There should have been a note stating specifically what I did not agree with. It wasn't the Title Brand issue that I objected to, it was the accident/ severe damage that Carfax noted on the report. Experian Autocheck is more accurate in the description of this car because it shows the car as a 'Salvage Brand' and that there are " No Accidents Reported " and also states correctly,

Unfortunately I should have paid more attention before the listing went out and should have had PCarmarket be specific as to what I did not agree with. I hope this explains my position. These comments are starting to sound very much like accusing me of misrepresenting this car. I assure you all that that is not the case and others the know me in this community know that to be untrue. Now, who wants to own a beautiful example of a totally restored 928GT ? ( at some discount for a former Branded Title )

@JJensen - I will add that the quality of the work and the vendors and the 928 knowledge of the prior owner is top notch. The last sale price reflected both that AND the salvage title. More of the former than the latter. And the last seller made no "dispute" about the car's past, hence most of the discussion was about the work.

What part of that do you state to be "incorrect?" You concede the car was stolen, paid out and re-sold w/ a salvage title. You note the car has a clean title now. The prior owner STATES that the salvaged title WAS submitted to CA (so it existed). What is there to be "incorrect." While it may not have been the INTENT, "title washing" took place. A car that was totaled out and given a branded title now has a clean title. Doesn't erase what happened. You simply should have stated the facts w/o the dispute. As I still can't tell what there is to legitimately be disputed about the CarFax.
@Abuong01 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and interpretation of the facts. I have truly represented everything I know about this car. I have never seen a copy of the N.Y. Salvage Title, but one must have existed at one time. I have the Salvage Certificate showing the car as a thief recovered car. I am assuming that State Farm paid the owner the value of the car and sold it to the person named on the Certificate. It does not make any statements to any damage or extent of any damage on the Salvage Certificate. It does not seem to ever have been crashed, rolled, burned or flooded. it sat for 17 years before completely rebuilt by a noted expert on 928's. Any automobile sitting for 17 years would need a lot of attention. Those are the facts. It is a fine example and worthy of any Porsche collection.
@JNasty Understood. End of the day the car has a branded title history and bidders will bid according to how they feel about the title. No doubt it is a great car with major repairs already done.

@Abuong01 - yes, the confusion / issue here is the seller somehow "challenging" CarFax who notes - correctly - that this car had a branded NY title. No one is denying the write-off/status, they are only denying they intentionally "title washed it." Which isn't really worth denying. It was a totaled car due to insurance pay-off and still is. This happened to a friend who bought a "clean GA title" Ferrari on BAT, turned out the car was totaled in NJ. His "clean title" in CA and GA did not offset his sale loss as he is an honest guy and disclosed the NJ totaling. Seems here the seller should simply be saying "YES the car was written off in NY and NOW it has a clean CA title" and dispute nothing. Would actually help the car, less debate on the negative. And more focus on the amazing Greg Brown work and previous stewardship. Right?
How can the car have a clean title when it was branded in another state. This really goes back to the BaT sale in 2020 where it was sold with a clean CA title. Looking for a GT, just not sure how this can be cleanly titled in PA given the branded history.

I just wanted to chime in and provide a link to the prior sale of this car on BAT last year, the discussion there covers all the questions being discussed here. I restored this car between June 2017 and March 2020, and Greg Brown and I rebuilt the motor between May and July 2018. I sent the current owner the restoration spreadsheet and more than 1600 pictures of the process that will be included with the car.

@JNasty PCarmarket is in possession of 25 pages of an explanation and a Restoration Log that is very detailed starting from the date that Mr. Edwards purchased the car until the date that I purchased it. It details very precisely what was done and the parts and outside repair shops that were used. That report will speak volumes as to what was performed and why.
@JJensen - PS, you are also posting all the receipts for restoration, correct? That will give everyone a clear view of what condition the car was post salvage and will go a long way to answering this. The more you can share the better for you (including pre-resto photos if you have them), thanks.

What exactly are you saying is "incorrect?" Per the reply, you are saying CarFax IS correct, no? Having a branded title vanish across a different state's registration is common and it - in no way -
"cleans" the car like it being written off never happened.
@JNasty It was indeed Purchased from State Farm Insurance as a Theft Recovery in 2000 with 58,902 miles and in storage for 17 years until it was purchased by Robert Edwards in 2017 with the same miles noted on the Salvage Certificate @ 58,902 miles. The Title I received from Mr. Edwards was clean with no mention of being a Salvage car. The Title I got back from Florida is clean as well. The Salvage Certificate from 2000 gives no further explanation of condition. It gives no further detail other than the mileage @ 58,902 miles. All 58,000 mile cars that have been in storage for 17 years would have needed a considerable amount of repair and restoration to look and drive as this car does. This car has been totally rebuilt. I sincerely hope this answers your question.
@JJensen - I am wondering why you are denying the "salvage title?" If you are saying the car was indeed 1) stolen and 2) recovered post pay-out and or 3) damaged while stole of course 4) the title would accurately be "salvage." This was was - book value - worth very very little in 2000. Please explain your challenge to the branded title. It's quite easy to get that removed registering in another state w/ a new title. Seen many many times. Means little related to the original facts that it's not on the current title. Is there any documentation around the condition when recovered. While Greg Brown receipts are wonderful, a FULL restoration post write-off only furthers the evidence the car was compromised, no?

@BarryLe I am golfing with my banker at noon who braved the weather yesterday to leave Chicago during a snow storm to get to Naples. I would not want to disappoint him! Tomorrow would be much better if you can make it. I agree, you should come and see the car.
@buccicone Thank you, I have just sent a 25 page Restoration Log that gives a time line and explanation of what was done to the car. It is very detailed. I hope that will alleviate many questions/concerns about the quality of the work done. As you know these cars are finally increasing in value and receiving the recognition for the fine cars that they are. The Log should be up for all to view shortly.

I have a Copy of the California Title and a Florida Title. Both are clean. I have a copy of the Salvage Certificate dated 3/29/2000. Allstate Insurance Company stamped and noted as a "recovered Theft " The car had 58,902 miles on the odometer as of that date. Wouldn't be the first time that Car Fax was inaccurate. The next owner was Rob Roberts who is a well known 928 expert who had the the car completely restored. I have all the documents/pictures on a thumb drive and can prove that this car has been completely re-built leaving nothing for the new owner to address. This is a 32 year old automobile that has been carefully restored by a person that is a respected expert on 928's. The car now runs like a watch, drives beautifully, quiet and pulls like a freight train. The new owner will be very pleased with this car mechanically and cosmetically. Eddie Gonzales is a respected Porsche repair shop in Naples. He did the last work and inspection. There is no evidence of any damage .The paint is beautiful as you can see in the pictures. The car has about 1300 miles since fully restored.
I am very interested in your 928. However, I am very concerned about the previous Branded title. How can you explain this and be so confident that the Carfax is incorrect? Do you have any service records for the car? Do you have any documentation of Greg Brown’s motor and transaxle rebuild? Why would a 928 motor and transaxle require a full rebuild with so few miles unless the car was totally neglected? What about the respray? Any documentation? I am anxious to bid on this car but there are so many unanswered questions. I hope the seller can provide answers to these questions and more supporting documentation.
