The Porsche 944 Turbo entered its final model year in 1989 and was upgraded to the specifications of the Turbo S version from the prior model year including a more powerful engine with a larger turbocharger as well as larger brakes, sport suspension, and a 5-speed manual transmission with an oil cooler and a reinforced limited-slip differential. Finished in Stone Grey Metallic, this example was acquired by the current owner in May 2022 and has since undergone extensive service including replacement of the timing belt, water pump, thermostats, crankshaft seal, cam drive seals, rear shocks, vacuum hoses, spark plugs, and more. This 944 Turbo is now being offered for auction at no reserve by its seller out of Ohio.

This 944 is finished in Stone Grey Metallic and is distinguishable as a Turbo model by its more rounded aerodynamic nose and body-colored diffuser below the rear bumper. Other details include integrated front fog lights, pop-up headlamps, body-colored side moldings, an optional electric tilt sunroof, and a black polyurethane spoiler at the base of the rear hatch. It rides on factory 16” Club Sport alloy wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps and Toyo Proxes tires from 2022. The seller notes the car was completely refinished in its original color under prior ownership and the exterior remains in very good overall condition apart from a light scrape on the left rear fender and chipped paint on the front bumper. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing very minor damage to the right rear end in 2012.

The cabin is trimmed in Black partial leather upholstery and features matching carpet floor mats with silver embroidered Turbo logos. Accessories include a leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, a digital clock, a locking glovebox, and a 10-speaker sound system with an additional amplifier and an original Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio. A fire extinguisher is mounted below the passenger seat and a Rennline integrated magnetic phone holder is mounted below the center air vents. Some small cracks are noted on the dashboard near the defroster vents and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional apart from the clock.

This 944 Turbo is equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine that delivers up to 250 HP and 287 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. The 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo also shared its larger brakes with the 928 S4 as well as an anti-lock braking system and sport-tuned suspension (M030) as standard equipment. Since purchasing the car in 2022, the seller oversaw the replacement of the timing and balance shaft belts, rollers, front main crankshaft seal, cam drive seals, water pump, thermostats, rear shocks, air box, all vacuum hoses, fuel lines, turbo-to-intercooler pipe hose, front sway bar bushings, hood/hatch struts, and spark plugs. The fuel injectors were also cleaned and sway bar braces were installed. Additionally, the car was fitted with an upgraded Focus 9 Technology solid state DME relay under prior ownership along with new OEM front control arms in 2020.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire, and a branded title (not actual mileage).

The seller would like you to know:Thank you for visiting my auction on this amazing car.  This was literally one of my poster cars back in the 80s.  I bought it in May of 2022 with the intention of taking some road trips in it and then doing some track-focused mods to it.  However, when I started going through it, I realized it was too nice, original, and rare to do what I wanted to do to it.  The 1989 944 Turbo is the best of the turbos.  From the factory, it came with all of the performance enhancements of the previous year's Turbo S, including a limited-slip "AOR" transaxle, bigger turbo, 30 more HP, front brakes from the 928 S4, staggered, wide, Clubsport wheels, extra frame bracing, and M030 suspension with adjustable damping and front ride height.  Someone is going to get a really nice 89 Turbo with updated maintenance, ready for the track, road trips, or just the occasional cars and coffee.”

@msobilo Hi, it has not been asked. I don't have any information on the age of the clutch. All I can say is that it feels fine, and doesn't slip at all.

@msobilo @msobiloa Hi, there was no issue with getting insurance. I have full coverage (liability, collision, candles, etc) with State Farm.

  • msobilo (registered bidder) 6 monthsago

Do you know if the "branded" title would cause an insurance issue? Since it's mileage, I would think not but some companies won't let you get anything but liability if it's branded. Do you currently have Hagerty?

I’ve seen this car in person and have ran a track session with this car. It’s as clean as described. The owner is very meticulous and it shows, the pictures don’t do it justice. It’s also turnkey where you can drive it 4 hours for a track weekend and drive it back. That says a lot about a 944 turbo.

It’s one of the reasons why I traded my early 944 for a 951S. The driving experience is very intoxicating. These are very robust cars when well maintained and this example is well maintained.

Hello to everyone watching this auction. I just wanted to remind everyone that in less than 24 hours someone is going to be the proud new owner of this great car, as there is no reserve on the auction. I'll be available for any questions you might have. Good luck!

@TransaxleJoe Hi! I don't know what caused the title to be branded as mileage unknown. The previous owner said he did not know either. He said that he thought that the mileage must have been entered incorrectly at some point on a title transfer, like transposing a couple of digits, but I think he was just speculating because the condition of the car is so good. It didn't concern me because the condition looks like a 70k mile car, I wasn't worried about resale value, and because it seems very common for 944s to be TMU due to the odometer gears breaking when they get old due to the plastic deteriorating. I don't know the correct mileage because the odometer has always worked under my ownership. Neither the previous owner nor the Carfax indicated any issues with the odometer. The only reason I would question that the mileage shown is not correct is because of the title.

Hello, super nice 944 , Question regarding the mileage branded title. Please elaborate on? Thank you. What is the correct mileage?

@alper944 Also, I think these phone camera YouTube videos on these auctions tend to exaggerate road noises. Every video I've seen seems to have tons of loud squeaks and rattles. In person it's not nearly as loud as in the video.

  • duc900sp (seller) 6 months, 1 weekago

@alper944 I believe what you're hearing is the tires. The noise was not there with the previous set of tires (different brand and type). I had gotten used to it but, coincidentally, @syarrish just mentioned it while he was test driving it about a half hour ago.

  • alper944 6 months, 1 weekago

On the drive video I hear a good amount of road noise. Any comment on the hub bearings possibly needing replaced?? Thank you

@alper944 About $40 for parts and 3-4 hours if you've never done it. Less time if you have experience. So maybe $400 if you take it to a shop?

  • alper944 6 months, 1 weekago

    Thank you for the clarity

  • duc900sp (seller) 6 months, 1 weekago

@alper944 I just reread my comment and wanted to clarify that the odometer does work.

  • duc900sp (seller) 6 months, 1 weekago

@alper944 Hi, thanks for the questions! Unfortunately the oil leak showed up a few months after I did all of that other maintenance. I hadn't fixed it yet because it's a very small leak and I was busy driving it to all of the events and trips I wanted to take it to this summer. If I was keeping the car I would have done it this winter when I'm not wanting to drive it as much. The only other issue, if you want to call it that, is that the clock in the dash does not work. Very common on these cars. Not hard or expensive to fix, it just wasn't a high priority for me. I would have eventually done it, in my quest to make the car perfect, but had not gotten around to it. The title is an Ohio title but is marked mileage unknown, as the listing states. This is also very common for 944s as the odometer gears usually break before reaching 30 years old or so. I don't know if that's why the title says that, but that's why it wasn't an issue for me. Condition of the car mattered to me more than what the title or the odometer said, and to me it looks like a 70k mile car, with up to date maintenance and zero rust.

  • Porschetwb (registered bidder) 6 months, 1 weekago

Please note that 1989 was not the last year of production for 944s. For the US, the 944 was produced in 1990 and 1991 with a 3.0 liter naturally aspirated engine (No turbos).

  • alper944 6 months, 1 weekago

It seems like a lot of maintenance was done. Why not repair of the oil leak and what is estimate to fix?? Any other known issues with the car?? Clear Ohio Title??

@turbo318 Thank you for the questions! There is a slight oil leak on the right hand side. I believe it's the oil manifold but it could be the front end of the cam housing. I have not seen any power steering fluid leaking. I don't know the true mileage because the odometer has always worked under my ownership. The mileage entries on the Carfax are all increasing, and the title wasn't marked mileage unknown until I think 2020, when the previous owner bought it. He had told me that he thought there must have been a mileage entry error at some point in the car's life but I think he was just speculating since the car's condition looks like a 70k mile car. I do not know anything about the accident except what the Carfax says, which is that it was minor and on the right rear. The right rear looks perfect to me. Both of the control arms were replaced by the previous owner between 2020 and 2022 with new genuine Porsche control arms (not rebuilt), due to wear. He gave me the receipt for them when I bought the car but I can't find it. If you have any more questions at all, please ask. I'm happy to answer them.

Hi nice 951 was curious if the power steering, cam housing or turbo have any leaks ? seams to be wet under the passenger front ? also what is the true mileage since its states not actual mileage, Do you know the extent of the damage from the accident ? noticed theres a new lower control arm ? thansk sorry for so mant questions.

Hello and welcome to my auction for my 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. I believe 1989 is the best year of the 944 Turbo. They are somewhat rare too. Of the 25,000 or so 944 Turbos sold worldwide, I'm told less than 1400 were made for the US market. It was essentially the last year they were sold in the US too. This is a sound car that I wouldn't hesitate to take on a long roadtrip. I'm the last year or so, I've driven it to 944Fest twice, to 944Camp down in the Smoky Mountains, and to a 944 meet in Helen, GA, with zero issues. One thing I failed to mention in the listing is that the AC works great! If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks!
