Up for auction is this exceptional 1989 Porsche 944 Coupe finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior.  With only 5k miles driven since new, this 944 makes the perfect addition to any Porsche collection and is said to remain in excellent driving condition. This example was originally delivered new through Stoddard Porsche to a local buyer in Ohio where it has remained ever since. It is now being offered in highly original condition accompanied by its original books, tools and window sticker.

The seller indicates the Guards Red finish to be in excellent condition (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  Noteworthy features include distinctive pop-up headlights and factory “phone dial” alloy wheels which come dressed in Fusion tires with plenty of tread life remaining.

Inside, you will find a black leather interior that has been well preserved throughout the years.  This 944 comes factory equipped with air conditioning as well as power adjustable seats, power windows and power mirrors.  No modifications have been made and the seller confirms all gauges, electrical components and accessories to be fully functional.

This 944 carries its original 2.7 L inline 4-cylinder engine which is mated to a number’s matching 5-speed manual transmission.  Having been kept up to date on all due maintenance, this 944 underwent a major service in 2017 which included a new Geba water pump installation as well as a cambelt and balance belt replacement.  A fresh service has been recently performed in preparation for sale and this 944 is said to be in excellent running order.

The sale of this impressive 944 will include 3 keys, a spare tire, jack, toolkit and air compressor, as well as the original books and window sticker. For any avid Porsche collector, this pristine 5k-mile 944 presents a very special opportunity.

    Hello all,
We just wanted to let everyone know the factory stereo is currently not working. The stereo powers on and the backlighting is working but there is no sound or screen information showing. Everything else works as it should.

    Happy bidding!

@switchcars great thank you for the clarification

@PorschePete70 We inspected everything around the gauges and did not find any rips or seem issues. It's possible what you are seeing is just a reflection.

Great car and amazing low miles brings me back to my HS days. In one of the pictures of the dash showing the gauges it looks like the dash pad is ripped or seam has opened up. Hard to tell from the pics can you confirm thanks.

@switchcars thank you very much for clarifying

I’ve always thought that it was interesting that Porsche would go to the trouble of creating a new engine displacement (2.7 L) for one year only before changing to the 4-valve/cylinder 3.0 L engine the next year in the new S2 model.
However the bump to 2.7 L was accomplished by increasing the cylinder bore to 104mm which was retained/reused when Porsche bumped the cylinder stroke to create the 3.0.

@Nadir definitely not an S2! Those are immediately recognizable as they have the Turbo bumper, airbag wheel, and other visual cues to differentiate them from the base 944.

    @jspearin thank you.
It is a lovely car, and I look forward to seller confirming your info.
Obviously, a 5k mile 944s2 is at a completely different price and desireability point than a 165bhp 2.7!

Looking at the engine bay shots, it is not a turbo and it is not a twin cam S2. It is a single cam so it is an single cam NA 2.7L which was rated at 165hp

  • switchcars (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Nadir thank you for pointing this out. We did not have a chance to review the listing before it went live today. I’ll make sure we take a look at it and get it corrected.

    Meaning 220 not 22

  • Nadir 3 years, 6 monthsago

    There are many inconsistencies here:
1 No naturally aspirated 944 had 22bhp the highest was the 944s2 with 208bhp.
2 The 944 turbo had 220bhp but by 1989 it was almost 250bhp.

So PCarmarket editors and selling dealer lets improve this low standard
-is this a naturally aspirated s2 with 208bhp
-is thos an early turbo with 220bhp

Please let us at least know what we are buying.
