The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster evokes the original 356 Speedster model with a short, steeply raked windscreen and a unique double-bubble rear tonneau cover. One of 2,065 examples produced in total and just 823 sold in the United States, this 911 Speedster was recreated as a custom “Anziano Illuzion” by Bob Anziano’s Bad Boy Cars of Santa Ana, California, during the late 1990s. It features full custom bodywork with Porsche 993 headlights as well as three-piece Kinesis wheels, Porsche 993 Sport Seats, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine paired with its original 5-Speed G50 manual transmission. A highly exclusive 911 customized by one of the most prominent builders of the era, this rare Anziano Illuzion Speedster has been with the current owner since 2005 and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

This Speedster was extensively modified by Bob Anziano, with the only original parts being its short windscreen, side windows, convertible top, and double-bubble tonneau cover. The customized bodywork includes wide fenders and rocker panels with integrated air intakes, a 993-style nose section with a custom sculpted hood and bumper, Porsche 993 headlamps and taillights, 993 side mirrors, custom recessed door handles, and an integrated body-color spoiler with air scoops above the rear fenders. The car is finished in Arctic Silver and rides on aftermarket 18” Kinesis three-piece wheels. The seller notes the tires show older date codes, a small crack is present on the leading edge of the left quarter panel, and the convertible top shows signs of deterioration. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report which shows minor damage to have occurred in 2014. The seller adds that the car was inspected by a professional restorationist, and no chassis damage was found.

The cabin is fitted with a pair of grey leather 993 Sport Seats and features custom door panels as well as a painted center console and instrument panel, a leather-covered dashboard, and white instrument dials with an “Anziano’s” logo on the tachometer. A custom sound system has also been installed including upgraded speakers, an amplifier, and an aftermarket head unit. Some wear is noted on the driver’s outer seat bolster and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional. The CARFAX report shows mileage inconsistencies and a potential odometer rollback; true mileage is unknown.

A claimed output of 303 HP comes from a replacement air-cooled 3.0-liter 911SC flat-six engine paired with a turbocharger and an oversized intercooler. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed G50 manual transaxle. The seller indicates the car was examined by the experts at TRE Motorsports and some maintenance items were addressed. All service is said to be up to date.

This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, some documentation, and a salvage/rebuilt title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a very limited edition build from the '90s that still looks contemporary today. It is not registerable in California because of the engine upgrade, so needs to be sold to or registered in another state. This is not a car to drive if you are reluctant to draw attention.”

    @Mobiletvspot I will reach out.
If not, pretty much any stock 3.2 engine will fulfill California requirements, as there's a tailpipe test and visual inspection. In any case, the engine currently in the car should sell for many thousands more than a stock 3.2 brings.

  • Mobiletvspot (registered bidder) 7 months, 3 weeksago

@techweenie Many thanks for the information. Very helpful sir. Is the individual with the engine open to selling it?

  • techweenie (seller) 7 months, 3 weeksago

@Mobiletvspot The car is already registered in California but will not meet current emission requirements, so registration cannot be renewed in California.
One person contacted me who has a 1989 engine and if they were to put that in the car it could be made to pass emissions in California but the trade-off is they would have an engine with 100 less hp. I’d rather see the car registered in another state where the emissions rules are not as restrictive.
Other than emissions, there should be no difficulty whatsoever in registering the car outside of California.

  • Mobiletvspot (registered bidder) 7 months, 3 weeksago

@techweenie Agreed sir. I'm researching the registration and insurance process for a salvage branded out of state car. Techweenie was the title branded rebuilt after a licensed rebuild shop fixed it? What is the engine issue you have in Cali that restricts registration? I ask as it may bar it from being registered in our states. Regards.

  • techweenie (seller) 7 months, 3 weeksago

@Mobiletvspot Obviously a matter of personal taste, but I agree. Unlike ither custom builds, the styling cues are Porsche-inspired; not borrowed from other car types.

And you can't build a PT cruiser for $3000 but that's what it's worth....

  • Aircooled-Exclusive 8 months, 1 weekago

    $55k is joke price

You can’t build that car for less than $200k in todays market

Components wise it’s easily $90k in parts all day everyday not even including the cost of the bare tub
(I sell aircooled used Porsche parts for a living, I was tempered to bid but had a big job in front of me and can’t get to this one Anytime soon)
A cheap paint job these days is $25k if all the metal
Is good and you have to find that shop (if you paid less wait a few years for results lol)
High end shop that repair/paint actual Singers like C&C collision in Alhambra would easily charge $45k

Not to mention the cost to assemble and tune

Keep in mind a mint ultra low mile
Speedster with a good title is still $185k-215k

I bet if you found a 3.2 engine did a easy swap
You could register it for California

Also being a 1989 you could
    Easily sneak in a 1989 964 engine
That’s a lil trade secret for 1989 models

  • PCARMARKET 8 months, 1 weekago

Folks asking about the reserve is so harmful as it serves no purpose. Many people assume the reserve is higher than it actually is, don't bid and lose the car. If you want the car please bid and let the auction process determine the price. We kindly ask that everyone who is participating respects the process.

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

    Whats a freasj build? Thanks

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 1 weekago

@mr.primavera1 I’d be guessing of course, but I was told it was stolen when it was pretty new.
Mind you the miles woukd only apply to chassis/transmission/axles/suspension because the engine is not original to the car, and I suspect was a freasj build.

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

Any ideas on mileage inconsistencies on the carfax? What do you think the real miles are on this car? Thanks

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 1 weekago

@mr.primavera1 Agreed on converting back. Also, it’s important to point out that a ‘salvage’ brand has no meaning it a lot of countries. It’d get a regular title.

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

The toughest part of Pcarmarket is if you think it won't hit the reserve and you don't bid, then it did hit the reserve or the seller and bidder made a deal and it didn't go into the deal tank then its gone forever. UGGGHHHH the FOMO is killing me!!!

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

Right? Its a beautiful car that is extremely wide with a bad ass wing. Even if the body mods aren't your thing, you could convert it back to an original bodied speedster and sell this for 100k, I'm guessing

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 1 weekago

@mr.primavera1 Ya got me! I can’t explain it.

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

Which then even if it sold for half of the value it should sell for 70k plus. So is it the wild body style that is keeping this value down? Does anyone in the Porsche community have an opinion? Thanks

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

I mean an original without the rebuilt title

  • mr.primavera1 (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

This is a real speedster correct? I mean even with a rebuilt title and the strange body work, an original in this condition would sell for 150k to 220k correct? I feel like something doesn't make sense, how is this such a good deal?

This build is pretty darn cool. I remember Anziano's creations from the 90's and how cool they were. This is such a unique piece of Porsche culture history. At this price the sum of the parts far far exceeds the current high bid. The speedster chassis, glass and parts are impossible to find, plus you're getting such a cool package.

It's probably worth pointing out that a stock 89 Speedster is rated at 204 HP.
Generally, 100 more horsepower is a good thing for enthusiasts.

  • Trecup 8 months, 1 weekago

Having done an inspection and road test of this car, its a throwback to the 90's when ball players were paying 200k and up for these cars. Surely a strong statement at that time with the rakish styling that out shined the factory speedsters and turbos. The car was well built by Anziano and you won't see yourself going the other way in the same model. Bonus that they started with an 89 Speedster. It's fun to drive and don't let the "300 hp" fool you; its pretty quick. GLWTS

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 1 weekago

In answer to a question, I received the current market value of a 300 hp Porsche engine with no issues is around $30,000
The current market value of a G50 transmission with no issues is about $5000

@closingtime I'll post closer images. It appears the left rear bumper end was 'caught' on something and pulled away from the quarter. Doesn't look like a tough fix to me.
There is no evidence of damage that I can find. Take a close look at all the chassis shots I looked everywhere for evidence of damage and photographed everything.
It's my opinion that the Carfax is incorrect; that the salvage title originated from a theft in which the original engine was stolen. All of the Speedster-specific parts remain: doors, windshield, glass and 'clamshell.'

  • closingtime (registered bidder) 8 months, 1 weekago

A few questions for you: Can you post the left fender crack in the gallery so we can all see it? It looks like the rear bumper is sagging; what is the issue? Are those scrapes on the front bumper or cracks? Do you know the extend of the damage that caused it to be Salvaged? Thank you

@993tts30 I understand your dilemma. But I think a well-sorted turbocharged 3.0 delivering 300HP could be an easy sell.

@techweenie thank you it is tricky to get a good photo, appreciation of your efforts is due and welcome. • Burgsailor (registered bidder) 8 months, 2 weeksago

Having just sold a car here on Pcar, I know how critical, true and accurate the adage: "you don't just buy a car, you buy the seller." I’ve worked with this seller (BK) for a few years in making multiple Porsche acquisitions and his counsel, insight, and understanding of Porsche is above reproach. This seller is a partner in a Porsche restoration business and has developed first hand understanding and history with 911s going back to the early ‘70s. Having spent 40 years collecting cars of various makes, and 30 years serving USN, I've come to appreciate and value having a "gold standard" in the room. BK is that standard --super knowledgeable and impeccable integrity.

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 2 weeksago

@group911 Yes, it's a real Speedster. The VIN is the best indicator of how the car was born.

  • group911 (registered bidder) 8 months, 2 weeksago

I see that it has all the 930 suspension and brake components but can you confirm that it started life as a real Speedster?

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 2 weeksago

@993tts30 I'm quite familiar with engine number location, and I've seen my share of damaged or altered numbers. I posted photos from TRE Motorsports as we tried to read the last 5 numbers on the case using a borescope. There is no indication of alteration in the visible numbers, as you can see.

  • 993tts30 (registered bidder) 8 months, 2 weeksago

@techweenie actually it should be quite visible looking from passenger side by fan housing, it’s behind the oil switch. There’s two sets fyi. One reads vertical and if not ground off or altered as a stolen engine would be, or restamped it will start and end with a star. The other is stamped on top of case which will tell us which engine case it is. USA or euro etc.Not picking on the car or Bob and the work was nice but his history was a bit less than legal in that era. I don’t want to end up with a car with an
    Missing or altered engine vin.

  • techweenie (seller) 8 months, 2 weeksago

@993tts30 The engine serial number is inaccessible. The star stamp and first three digits are visible (we used a borescope) and the 629 that is visible identifies it as a 1979 911SC case. The rest of the numbers are behind engine components. I'll put up shots of what's visible.
