Among the most iconic, influential, and sought-after supercars of all time, the Ferrari F40 was unveiled in 1987 to celebrate the marque’s 40th anniversary. It was the last Ferrari automobile to have been personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and is characterized by its striking Pininfarina-designed bodywork, cutting-edge composite materials, advanced aerodynamics, and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine which provided a top speed of over 200 MPH. This 1990 example is finished in Rosso Corsa and was delivered new in Switzerland by Ferrari Suisse SA. Supported by a detailed maintenance history and a major recent service, this F40 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Switzerland with approximately 47k kilometers (29k miles) showing on the odometer.

Featuring wind tunnel-developed aerodynamics, the F40’s bodywork was designed by Pininfarina and constructed from lightweight carbon fiber, Kevlar, and aluminum. The car’s appearance is defined by a wide and low profile, bold lines and edges, a prominent front spoiler, pop-up headlights, NACA air ducts, a vented polycarbonate engine cover, and a large fixed rear wing. Other details include lightweight polycarbonate windows, Scuderia fender shields, a clamshell bonnet and decklid, a body-colored rear diffuser, and triple center-mounted exhaust pipes. This example is finished in Rosso Corsa and rides on factory 17” Speedline multi-piece wheels with center-locking hubs and new Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The seller notes the exterior remains in very good condition and the paint is mostly original apart from some minor touch-ups and the bumpers which have been refinished. The seller adds that the car is accident-free and retains all original body panels. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The lightweight cockpit is devoid of a sound system, power windows, carpeting, leather trim, or door panels. Equipment includes a pair of red Stoffa Vigogna racing seats, exposed carbon fiber doors with manual window cranks, a gated manual shifter, a black three-spoke steering wheel, drilled aluminum pedals, air conditioning, analog Veglia Borletti gauges, and an engine start button. The interior is described to be in excellent condition with all gauges and accessories remaining fully functional.

Derived from its predecessor the 288 GTO, the F40 features a mid-mounted 2.9-liter V8 engine with twin IHI turbochargers. Up to 471 HP and 436 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Acceleration from 0-60 MPH takes place in under 4 seconds with a top speed of over 200 MPH. The double-wishbone suspension setup was largely derived from the 288 GTO and stopping power is handled by cross-drilled 330mm discs with Brembo calipers at the front and rear. The seller indicates an extensive collection of maintenance records and invoices are included in the sale along with the original service booklet. A major service was performed in September 2023 including new belts and gearbox revision. The seller adds that the fuel bladders will also be replaced before delivery to the next owner.

This sale will include the original owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, a battery charger, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know:An original Swiss-delivered F40.”

@reserve416 correct, carfax not available as the car never left Swiss soil since delivered new in 1990 by Ferrari Suisse Sa in Nyon. Funny as this is one of the first official cars delivered cars to Switzerland despite being illegal back to register in the country. Car was owned by one of the biggest BMW dealer network for over a decade. Classiche can be done as original exhaust comes with the car.

seems like a very nice car. carfax probably not available in Swiss and Classiche not available probably due to tubi exhaust.

This seems to be a nice f40. Just put aside some money aside if you feel you must.

Seems like some associated risks with the unknowns, spending $2 mil on a 44KM f40.

  • Munich (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@motpot -- Good find on the Diablo. Wonder why the username change.

  • motpot (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

Im just not sure why they would make a new account to sell this F40.

  • motpot (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@Munich I actually think the seller is a dealer, most likely Porschegstaad since the Diablo listed here a few days ago is in the pictures of this car. Most likely they dont know the answers to your questions, which is why they're not answering them.

  • motpot (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@FForty Are you the same seller as the Diablo that went for auction a few days ago? The diablo is in the pictures of this car.

  • Munich (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

So many responses from seller about paintwork and cosmetic quality, so little about history. Including the fact that the seller proudly touts this as an "original, Swiss-delivered F40" but photo 101 clearly shows the original buyer as a corporation in Jersey, UK.

Also, hard to ascertain exactly who seller is. A dealer who owns the car attempting to sell it? A dealer selling on consignment for an owner? Is selling dealer the same one who did servicing in September 2023? Many questions asked of seller, lots of "I'll check and get back to you," and yet responses only see to come in about the paintwork and cosmetic condition. If the car is in Switzerland, why not pick up the phone and get a (local Swiss) Massini Report before trying to sell it?

@Oregon_Motor_Company thank you for your support

  • FForty (seller) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@Oregon_Motor_Company maybe in the IS you treat cars in in a way that deteriorates their conditions. But if a car is being driven and is being well looked after it can stay in a very good condition. We are happy to welcome any independent expert to assess the condition of the car. The windshield has original stamping, no cracks or chips, same goes for the body work. The car was subject to an impeccable service schedule.

  • FForty (seller) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@Lottacars sorry but there are so many questions coming all at once, we are trying the best to answer them as fast as we can. Thank you for your understanding

  • FerrfanFL (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

if this is a #4 car, then the cars in my collection should be crushed and disposed of.....

  • Oregon_Motor_Company (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@the.car.museum Calling a 34-year-old car with 30K miles a #4 car is absurd. From Hagerty: #4 vehicles are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting, the windshield might be chipped and perhaps the body has a minor dent. Imperfect paintwork, split seams or a cracked dash might be present. No major parts are missing, but there might be non-stock additions. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration.

@FForty -- I've been mulling this over all week, and I have previously imported supercars from foreign countries to the United States. However in this case I'm wary due to the lack of Carfax, a Massini Report, Classiche Cert -- anything to verify its history. Do you have anything beyond the posted service records?

  • rnak (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

Hi Seller- Did the upgrades to the gearbox address the issues that F40s experience in the bell housing? Are the turbos all original or have they been replaced or serviced?

Based on miles and paint work would it be fair to say this car is a #4 condition (Fair) car?

  • FForty (seller) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@reserve416 the condition of the paint is very good. The car has been detailed and polished last week. A ceramic coating has been applied to the car. There are no chips on the pain and no cracks. Same applies for the hinges of the engine cover which is usually a spot where the paint can get damaged. We are working to get underbody pictures uploaded asap.

  • momotime (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

    1) is this car Classiche Certified
    2) Marcel Massini Report
    3) are you sure the front and other areas (other than bumpers) have not been repainted. Clearly looks like repainted front end
    4) will this car be sold with a Swiss Title in the name of the Seller
    5) other than Tubi (you state original accompanies sale) what else if anything is not original.
    6) date codes on tires
    7) how long will it take to put the bladders in the car at your expense
    8) tools

  • Lambogas (registered bidder) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@FForty .. What is the time frame for having the tanks installed , I just did a set of aluminum tanks and there is a lead time to get them

  • FForty (seller) 2 months, 3 weeksago

@reserve416 yes on the registration card on the left side you see the production date.
    2) I will check that right away.
    3) Will check that as well.
    4) yes if the sale is successful the bladders will be replaced by oem bladders or aluminum tanks depending on buyer preference. I recommend aluminum tanks for safety.

    @Lottacars OEM Size

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

@Lottacars We are supplying the car with a replacement bladder kit (OEM) or Aluminium tanks (USA), the cost is about 15K for aluminium tanks.

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

@Lottacars This car was not listed for sale in Europe, the car comes with an LM/Tubi exhaust with cat delete mounted as well as with an original system with OEM cats and muffler/pipes. US import duty is 2.5%. The seats are OEM and have been reupholstered some years ago.

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

@Silvertiger The ball joints have probably been replaced judging by their condition but the arms are original. Over the years and with several cleanings the white lettering tends to disappear. The car was recently detailed with dry ice and this might have removed the lettering. We will investigate. Thanks for the question!

  • Lottacars (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

In the previous post re the seats i meant “XL or OEM”. Sorry

  • Lottacars (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

What is the cost of the OEM and aluminum bladder replacements?

  • Lottacars (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Also have you imported cars to US before. Apologize if “many” but I do t know the name of your dealership.

  • Lottacars (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Does it have regular seats or OEM? I assume no Tubi? As I recall the import duty is about 2.5% , or? Was this car listed for sale in Europe? Thank you

The difference between European drivers and US is Europe they drive them which I think is great and personally follow.
Question, were the upper front control arms replaced? As the photos do not show the factory white lettering. Guessing with that km on it that the ball joints/arms needed replacing.

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

    @ctracer 1. Correct
    2. The synchro of the 2nd gear was replaced and we took the opportunity to revise and overhaul the gearbox.
    3. For a car of such value we recommend shipping by air, as the car is low and light it fits in the below of an airliner. The cost is typically around 18k to the US depending on current rates. We have a good experience with that so we can assist you in the full process.
    4. OEM flexible bladders but there is an aluminum tanks kit that can be fitted like the LM and US versions that has no limitations.
    5. Perfect condition
    6. Tier 4, despite the mileage this car is in immaculate conditions and has always been meticulously maintained.

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

@Dom33 yes indeed! They were built to be driven, it is the ultimate sports car!

  • FForty (seller) 3 monthsago

@DriverguyTX @DriverguyTX No actually, alot of cars have similar mileage in Europe. They are 34 years old and if you divide the mileage its less than 2000km / year. We know some cars with well above 100’000km ! And that are in immaculate original conditions. Most of the car is in composite so the fear of corrosion and rust is not present !

  • ctracer (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Here are some initial questions I have for the seller:
    1. Was the CarFax posted in error? Vehicle referenced is not for an F40.
    2. What revisions were made to the gearbox?
    3. What do you estimate for shipping arrangements and cost to the USA?
    4. What type of replacement fuel bladder would you install, OEM or something that doesn't have limited life?
    5. What is condition of circuit board?
    6. Using Hagerty classifications, would you consider this car to be Tier # 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Thank you and good luck with auction.
