Built by Zurlinden Gruppe of Jacksonville, Florida, this 1990 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 “Gruppe 6 Prototype” was stripped to bare metal and rebuilt as a custom backdated long-hood 911.  The full steel bodywork recalls the styling of the early 1970s and the cabin has been tailored in fine Italian leather with vintage-style gauges and square weave carpeting.  The original flat-six engine has been rebuilt by Rasant to a 3.8-liter displacement and paired with individual throttle bodies, MoTeC engine management, and a fully rebuilt 6-speed manual gearbox with GT3 limited-slip differential. Featured at the Luftgekühlt 7 air-cooled Porsche gathering in 2021, this 911 has been driven less than 2k miles since completion of the build and is now being offered for auction by its owner out of Oklahoma City, OK.

After being stripped to bare metal, the car was outfitted with hand-fabricated steel bodywork including custom-designed rocker panels, a long-hood nose section, bumpers, and a split-grille rear decklid. The front bumper features integrated LED driving lights, a jabroc plywood splitter, Airfoil horn grilles, and large air intakes. The rear bumper includes a modern-style skirt with integrated GT3 center exhaust tips. Lighting includes custom 9Eleven LED headlamps, PIAA LP-Series driving lights, and original long-hood corner markers with LED bulbs. The car is painted Slate Grey and rides on a set of custom Fikse ZF Series 17” wheels dressed in new Continental tires.  Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.

The cabin has been re-trimmed in Italian full leather upholstery and classic German wool square-weave carpeting. The original power-operated seats have been reconstructed with new foams and modified with pneumatic lumbar support.  Other features include backdated gauges with 356 center ring, a custom roll bar, rear seat delete with storage compartments, custom teak trim, an electric A/C unit, Porsche Classic Communication Radio, and Focal speakers paired with an amplifier and subwoofer.

The car’s original engine was rebuilt by Rasant to a 3.8-liter displacement including forged pistons, Pauter rods, ARP bolts, and individual throttle bodies with a GT3 resonance intake plenum.  Other features include an upgraded oil pump, MoTeC M84 engine management, and a GT3 stainless steel muffler with polished tips.  A claimed output of 320 HP and 292 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt and close-ratio G50 6-speed manual gearbox including an RS lightweight clutch/flywheel, GT3 limited-slip differential, RS mounts, and FD Motorsports shifter/linkage. Stopping power is derived from AP Radi-Cal 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brake calipers paired with cross-drilled rotors as well as a 993 master cylinder and vacuum booster. The suspension includes KW V3 coilovers and RS rubber bushings along with BBi RS uprights, ball joints, and tie rods. The car also features upgraded ZF electro-hydraulic power steering.

This sale will include a clean title.

WOW! I am truly humbled by all the fantastic and positive remarks here, thank you!!

I couldn't be prouder of this project......it let us push ourselves as well design something new. Hand forming steel is slow and even slower if you're not happy with the results. But the results can never be a product of frustration or settling for "close enough". That's why we threw away 3 bumpers and two different rockers designs before we said "it's right". It took us a little over two years from start to finish and more than considerable investment, but I think "it's right".

I had the privilege of seeing this car today in person and it is a stunner. Every time you walk around it you notice a new custom detail and then to hear from the owner the thought that went into it was so much fun. The owner is a passionate P car guy with an impressive collection that he loves to drive and even tour around the country. Excited to see this on play out.

@jad930 the reasons we — and other high-end builds you see like us do this — are to provide advantages to the build and the owner. First, aesthetics: we get to remove the belt-driven engine-mounted factory pump and the hoses around it from the engine compartment. Second, relocation: we now use an electric pump and can mount that where we want, so the front trunk is great to hide it in. Finally, it shifts a little weight forward in the car, which never hurts. We build cars to be driven everyday, so we’re using OEM parts to make these modifications function properly and be reliable for the owner.

Not familiar with the hydro electric steering on this one. Can anyone comment and are their any disadvantages?

    Thanks

  • marcz (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@acahoon yes, that's the lumbar support squeeze bulb. And, the headliner is the same red leather elsewhere in the interior. Sorry, those pictures are a bit washed out.

  • Acahoon (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Beautiful work - 2 simple questions:

    1) is headliner and trim red or orange ? - shows differently on laptop vs phone.

    2) Photo 66 - Is bulb for seat lumbar support ?

  • Clay7484 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

I have seen this car multiple times in person and it is on point. It looks and sounds like a half million dollar car, a very pragmatic build. It's a stunner. The owner is an avid Porsche enthusiast and a major contributor to the Oklahoma City car community, transact with confidence.

  • marcz (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@jad930 a dyno sheet is forthcoming

And thank you, everyone, for all of your amazing responses to this car. This car was a departure from a lot of prior work and I was humbled by the opportunity to "stretch legs" with our designs and build more serious aesthetics.

We'll be dropping another video soon talking over some more details about this car.

  • Jad930 1 year, 10 monthsago

    Any dyno numbers to share?

  • 911SCFan 1 year, 10 monthsago

I saw this car at Luft last year.  It was staged right in front of the Luft 7 merchandise shop for everyone to see.  The one-off old school steel body work was absolutely insane.  Very special car.  Zurlinden is pumping out some incredibly unique stuff.  One of their hotrods was recently the cover and center story on Panorama Magazine.  GLWTA!

  • drb930 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@marcz I don't know why you would not disclose that, but it's your auction.

I've seen this car in person several times and it truly is special. The detail of the metal work on front/rear bumper/side skirts is what makes it stand out vs. other backdates in my eyes. There is no stone left unturned and the winner will have a one-of-a-kind 911.

  • marcz (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

@drb930 please look at pic #107 for the designation. We changed rations #3 thru #6 in the course of the rebuild/upgrades.

@jamminman the A/C controller is from Carbone in Poland and the A/C pump & controller are from Classic Retrofit in England.

  • thatgrip 1 year, 10 monthsago

@DAC1000 that is a dead pixel on the camera which took the photo - Fuji GFX 50S. I missed it; my apologies.

  • drb930 (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Can you provide a close-up picture of the Transmission Numbers to show the designation?

  • marcz (seller) 1 year, 10 monthsago

Thank you for all the wonderful compliments and questions!

@burnrubr we've not weighed the car but I would think it's probably close to a stock 9964 C2.

@tjlahr please pardon us, some of the shots without the hood badge were taken a few months before we took the set for this auction. The car features a factory orange bar hood crest presently.

@JJensen the electric AC pump is mounted in the front trunk, under the black leather luggage board. I will follow up with a pic. Yes, it blows nice and cold around hot OKC in the summer.

  • JJensen (registered bidder) 1 year, 10 monthsago

I had the pleasure of speaking with him at LUFT 7 about the car and lusted after it he entire weekend. I wish I had more room to bring this to the East Coast. Good luck with sale.

Greetings and thank you for looking at this amazing car. I’m the builder and am here to represent the car on behalf of the owner, so please feel free to direct any questions my way. This is a truly unique piece that we labored design elements, fabrication, and finishing to produce a tradition honoring yet forward looking design. While this is created in the traditional form of steel for its body, it’s also the genesis for the company’s future work to create the ultimate “evolved” air-cooled 911. Indeed a unique piece and ownership opportunity. Thank you and good luck!
