Finished in Guards Red over a Cashmere Beige interior, this 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 is one of just over 2,000 Cabriolets imported to the U.S. for the model year. The car was originally registered in Michigan and spent time in Ohio before moving to South Carolina in 2000 where it remains today. Benefitting from recent service, this Carrera 4 is now being offered for auction with approximately 39k miles on the odometer.

This 964 is finished in Guards Red with a black cabriolet top and matching tonneau cover. It features an aftermarket front lip spoiler and rides on factory 17” Design 90 wheels dressed in Continental tires. Noted flaws include a chip in the windshield, a small crack on the rear spoiler, and 2011/2013 date codes on the tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Cashmere Beige interior features optional heated 8-way power seats and custom “Porsche 911” logo floor mats. Driver’s amenities include power windows and mirrors, central locking, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, a locking glove box, and an aftermarket Alpine radio. All gauges and accessories are said to remain fully functional.

An air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six engine provides up to 247 HP to all four wheels by way of a 5-speed G50 manual gearbox. Recent service items include the replacement of the HVAC blower motor, a fuel injector, and spoiler control module as well as transmission, differential, and brake fluid flushes.

This sale will include a clean title, the original owner’s manuals, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

Just added a fun picture to the gallery. My lovely assistant and I had a really nice time driving and photographing this car. It’s a very special original paint, low mile, strong running 964 Cab. Good luck to our bidders in these last few minutes.

The question is referencing the idle control valve. The Bosch part is back ordered and wasn’t going to be available before close of auction.
The current part was disassembled and cleaned which yielded an improvement. Still the part will probably need to be replaced eventually.
Today I gave the owner of the car another source for 964 parts. We will see if that yields a solution.
I’m sure the owner of the car will help the buyer get this sorted out. It’s an easily replaceable item.
    Thank you!

@CartBeforeHorse What's the story with the defective idle valve replacement that was suggested but declined?

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

I just wanted to encourage all bidders and viewers to check out the video gallery. There is a great driving video that really shows the performance of the car…tight turns, heavy braking, heavy acceleration. The didn’t complain a bit. This was my first experience in a C4. The all wheel drive felt sure footed and confidence inspiring…an absolute joy. Come pick it up and I’ll show you where this road is! Good luck bidders.

I had a blowout in my Porsche over the wknd on perfect lookin tires newer than these- #1 : change tires makes zero sense having these on.
#2 - can’t compare this to 356 prices … not for decades to come. But not for investment - buy yo drive to enjoy…. GLWTA

I attended the Eurofest Car Event today in Greer, SC ….near the BMW Performance Center. Lots of conversations with Porsche folks and we were all in agreement that a 964 Cab is an incredible value. So much aircooled excellence for an amazing price The low mile original paint cars like this one will see tremendous gains.

    Hello all.
Paint meter readings have been uploaded to PCarmarket. They will add them to the gallery soon.
    Thank you.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@a2car thanks for the question. The owner of the Cab confirmed for me today that this car is original paint. I’ll try and nudge him to send me some meter readings.
@autostradallc , thanks for your bid!

Any evidence of paintwork on this beauty? Possible to get paint meter readings? Thanks.

  • maxmilford (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

I have a 91 Guards Red C2 Cabrio with 90,000 more miles than this beauty. The engine is original but oil leaks fixed at Porsche Classic in Jacksonville last year. These are great cars with air conditioning that works and an unbelievable buy compared to coupes. Buy now. A 356 cab is a 59% premium over a 356 slicktop.

Guards red 964 C4 Targa with 11K miles just sold for $156K plus buyer fee. Worth every penny but it also makes me appreciate how amazing of a buy a nice 964 Cab is. Can’t help but think this may be one of the best aircooled choices that haven’t bubbled yet.

Cobalt, your comments are always welcome. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

  • cobalt 1 year, 6 monthsago

I do hope that nobody took my comment about production numbers in a negative way. Glad it was resolved as this appears to be a nice example that was cared for, well optioned and represented. You don't see many like this. Grab one while you can before they are all electrified or singerized. The beauty of these is in their stock form.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Interesting that there’s so much activity happening with regard to reimagining 964 cabs.

In SC we have a Porsche shop who is taking 964 cabs and converting them to water cooled cars and somewhat of a speedster look I believe. And then these two are making the news lately:

@cobalt There was an error in one of our references, the listing has been updated.

  • CartBeforeHorse (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Hey Cobalt. Hope all is well with you and the Turbo (and your other cars).
That number was put there by the PCarmarket editing team. Not sure where they got it from.
However, I would direct the bidders to heed the advice of Cobalt. He knows more about these 964s than most of us can imagine.

  • cobalt 1 year, 6 monthsago

Nice looking cab but I am not sure where the quantity of 673 units comes from. There were a total of 2007 cabs imported in 1990.

    GLWA

Hello all. Welcome to the 964 Cab auction.
I own a 964 coupe and 964 Targa and I’d never had the pleasure of driving a cabriolet 911 until the owner asked me to sell this one for him.
I was so pleasantly surprised and I had such a fun time photographing and filming the car with the top down.. Also, another first for me is that this was my first time driving a C4. I have to say that it was extensively confidence inspiring and it went up the mountain in the driving video like a sure footed billy goat full of grace, speed, and handling capability. I know that you compromise a few pounds for the all-wheel-drive system but it absolutely boosted my confidence the car was there for me and would get me around the corner and up the mountain. I left the experience wondering if the C2/C4 debate is another falsity in the Porsche world… Kind of like how the middle year cars (74-77) are undervalued and shouldn’t be.
I’m also kind of overwhelmed with the realization that this is probably the most versatile Porsche 911 that I’ve ever driven:

    Track day= check
    Hot date night=check
    Beach trip=check
Snow ski trip on snowy roads=check
    Parade transport for homecoming queen=check

It’s a do it all machine. Low miles and very very original. I found a new love in the Porsche world and it happens to be one of the most affordable even though it was more expensive than the other choices back in 1990.
Good luck bidders! This is a very special example.
