Up for auction is this 1990 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet finished in Guards Red.  Sold new in California, this 964 was eventually brought to Alan Johnson Racing of San Diego where it was converted to 911 Turbo specifications over the course of several years including factory fender flares, Turbo-spec brakes, and a 3.3L turbocharged flat-six engine.  It has also received a full custom sound system and integrated radar detector along with a set of deep-dish 5-spoke wheels.  A lifelong West Coast car, this eye-catching 964 Turbo Cabriolet is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Arizona.

This 964 has been fitted with factory steel Turbo fender flares along with corresponding front and rear bumpers, rocker panels, Cup design mirrors, and a Tea Tray rear spoiler.  The car has been completely refinished in Guards Red and fitted with a tan cabriolet soft top as well as a matching tonneau cover.  Some small paint cracks are depicted on the bumpers and the seller notes that the cabriolet top may only be operated manually at this time as one of the cables needs to be repaired.  Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.  This Carrera 4 rides on a set of aftermarket deep-dish 5-spoke wheels with red painted spokes, wheel spacers, and a set of BF Goodrich tires dated from 2011.

Inside, the Cashmere Beige interior has been fitted with a full custom sound system including a Fosgate amplifier, upgraded head unit, and subwoofers mounted within custom enclosures in place of the rear seats.  A vintage integrated radar detector system is also equipped with a control panel mounted above the instrument cluster.

During the 1990s, this 964 was equipped with a Porsche 930 3.3L turbocharged flat-six engine prepared by Alan Johnson Racing of San Diego.  The engine has been fitted with an updated 964 Turbo intercooler and is paired with a factory G50 5-speed manual transmission sending power to all four wheels.  Upgraded exhaust manifolds have also been installed along with Turbo-spec brake calipers with cross-drilled rotors front and rear.  The car has been personally maintained by the seller at Redline Service of Arizona over the past two ownerships and there are no outstanding items reported at this time.

A salvage title was issued by the state of California after the vehicle was stolen and recovered in 1990, and a clean Arizona title will accompany the sale. Powered by a genuine 930 engine and sporting factory 911 Turbo bodywork, this custom 964 Cabriolet presents a very special opportunity.

@hilltop I cannot address any of the odometer discrepancies. The owner that did this car estimated he put about 40,000 miles on it. And they are from Lake Tahoe to San Diego always on the freeway.

  • Chuckanatr (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Akal The top is fairly easy to do sometimes you can repair it and make it work. The drive cables are $1200 from the dealer but I understand there are a lot cheaper an outside source. The AC
I believe blows cold but I’ll check it it’s only 60 here today.

  • Chuckanatr (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

@Akal I have not been able to get the car on the left but if I remember right the brackets are to support the plastic liner that is not on the car.In the desert we take that off the car seem to cool better.

As another commented on, the odometer reads 86440 miles while Carfax says the mileage was reported in 2017 as being 143900 miles. At what true mileage was the engine installed, and how many miles since then?

  • Akal (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

What are the two brackets that are just hanging with nothing attached to the front of the rear driveshaft on the passenger side?
What is the estimate cost of repair of the top? Does the AC blow cold for AZ?
    Thanks
    Al

The back of the chain housing does look a little different then my 3.3 turbo motor in the engine stand. unless someone else can tell me another way to verify exactly what disingenuous a 3.6. I do not have any documentation and since there are no internal designation numbers or serial numbers to tell me different. I have driven a few turbos in my day and this one is definitely in the fast category so it’s pretty much what you see is what you get.

  • Chuckanatr (seller) 2 years, 4 monthsago

I uploaded some pictures that show this car has 964 Cam towers part numbers which I am told designate it to be a 3.6 L. These cam towers due not come on a 3.3. It is not 930 suspension. It is all 964.

Does this car have 964 or turbo rear trailing arms? How can you tell it's a 930 motor and not a 3.3 964 turbo motor? Which turbo is it running?

We do not have any documentation on the building of this car. All the paperwork was lost two owners ago. By year I assume you mean the engine because the car is a 1990. I checked and there are no engine number stamped on the block not even an internal designation number. This engine has no oil leaks. Picture 59 was back before the car was first pressure washed for the first time. Yes it does have a clear Arizona title. No documentation from the day it was stolen back in 1990 or pictures. The Carfax does show when it was stolen 1990. Customer retained the car when it was salvage title then it was restored by AJ USA when it went to Nevada and now it is in Arizona

This car doesn’t have its original engine, so of course it’s a TMU.

  • sculptedmetal (registered bidder) 2 years, 4 monthsago

Very tempting car, but need more info. Do you have documentation on the build, year, engine, mileage? There appears to be oil leak on photo #59 but not seen on other photos, was it fixed? Why is there an odometer and Carfax mileage discrepancy? Does it now have a clean Arizona title? Do you have any documents from the original unmodified car? Thanks!
