Up for auction is this nicely presented 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet finished in Velvet Red Metallic over a black leather interior. This impressive 1990 example features power operated leather front seats, a factory limited slip differential and aftermarket alloy wheels. Having been treated to over $6k in mechanical service over the past year, this 5-speed 944 shows approximately 66k miles on the odometer and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
Under previous ownership, this 944 was professionally refinished in its factory original color of Velvet Red. The finish is shown to remain in very good condition, a collection of detailed images is provided in the photo gallery. Exterior features include distinctive pop-up headlights, integrated front fog-lights and a black Cabriolet top which has been converted to manual operation. This 944 rides on aftermarket silver painted 17" Sport Edition Cup 4 alloy wheels which come dressed in fresh Kumho tires, although the original wheels will be included in-sale.
This 944 sports a handsome black leather interior with added wood trim. Factory options include power operated leather front seats, cruise control, air conditioning and an additional amplifier which is currently uninstalled, but still included. An aftermarket JVC head unit has been installed and the seller indicates that the odometer was rebuilt under his ownership with approximately 1k miles added since. The cabin is stated to be in great shape; however, the clock is currently non-functional, and the rear seat exhibits a slight tear. A recent A/C service has been performed and all other gauges, electrical components and accessories are stated to be operational.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.0 L inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 208 HP and 207 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a desirable 5-speed manual transmission with a factory limited slip differential. In the past year, over $6k has been spent in mechanical service which includes the following items:

- Alternator
- Water Pump

Just as a reminder, ALL mandated and recommended Porsche maintenance and services are current on this car and are fully documented. The car was gone through again by a repair facility specializing in German automobiles just prior to being listed for sale. This is a proper 944 Cabriolet.

@Spokayman You are quite correct. Most people have no idea that Porsche made a 944 convertible and most will never see one in their lifetime. The car is truly rare and if you ever looked up how they actually built them, it was pretty amazing (hint, Porsche shipped each 944 destined to be a Cabriolet across Germany, cut the top off, then shipped it back to the Porsche factory to be completed. NOT a cost effective business model). In the end, just a few thousand of the over quarter million 944s built were cabriolets, and I truly believe this one is one of the nicest ones still out there. I hope this one goes to somebody who will care for her as I have.

My wife often reminds me of how nice ours was (same color exterior with a burgundy interior and cocoa top), and we certainly miss it.
It always seemed to attract attention at Porsche gatherings, car shows, gas station, and parking lots.
Few non-Porsche people even knew what it was, and even some Porsche enthusiasts were surprised Porsche made a 944 convertible.

The last two shows where the leather has started to come away a bit from the back seat foam. As I related earlier, I have included a replacement seat as part of the sale. @Skindoc Thank you for your question. I did have a photo of the options sticker (and of the back seat) among the pictures that I provided PCARMARKET, but for whatever reason, they did not post it. I have gone back and asked them to post the photo of the sticker and will also ask them to post the back seat photo. I will call them on Monday if they have not posted the photo by then. Regarding the new seat skin, the car has the back seat option. However, there is a place on the back seat, where the leather is pulling away from the foam. I have provided a used replacement seat as part of the auction, so that the buyer can just swap out the seat if they like. In the 944, the back seat is held in with a series of clips across the top, then glued in on the bottom. I actually had appointment at a local upholstery shop to swap out the seat, when we were hit with COVID-19 and everything shut down.
Nice looking color combo. A few questions. Could you post a picture of the production sticker with the option codes? Also, in #50, it appears there is a rear seat skin? I didn't see any photos of the rear seat, especially with the top up? Does it have the package shelf in place of the rear seat backs? Thanks, Phil
@SeaDooRider68 I'm not sure exactly what you are asking , but if you can explain exactly what you want, I will make sure to go out to the garage and take the appropriate photos... I do know for a fact that the rear window does not leak, there are no cracks, etc., and it all seems very secure to me. Nonetheless, if you can explain exactly what you want, I'll make sure to take those photos...Thanks again for your question...

@Ddeph67 Thanks for your comments. Thankfully I have never had any cooling issues with this 944. When I first acquired her, I thought the temp gauge read higher than it should (about 2/3 of the way up the dial vice about half way which is what you would expect to see). Concerned, I had every inch of the engine checked with a calibrated laser thermometer with the car running at full temp. Bottom line, she ran at a steady 190 degrees f, which is spot on perfect. Exactly where she is supposed to be. Furthermore, if you look at the receipts, you should she where we recently did a full (scheduled) cooling system service at a local German car shop. This included a full system check, and once again, no problems. Thanks again for your question.

Hi all, My name is Keith and I am the current owner. First of all, my 944 S2 Cabriolet is a five speed, not a six speed. Minor error there by PCARMARKET. I hope they fix that. Also, a word about the car. She is the best handling car I have ever owned. I'm told the nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution (comes from the engine being in the front) is the reason. Anyway, friends of mine who own the more traditional rear engine Porsches have repeatedly told me that my 944 is an impressive handler and I do believe them. Also, the 944 Cabriolet is (in my opinion) one of the few convertibles built in the last 40+ years that looks as good with the top up as down. To me, most (top up) modern convertibles look like someone stapled a hunk of canvas to the body of the car. There seems to be no effort expended to make the convertible top "flow" with the rest of the lines. I feel that is not an issue with the 944 Cabriolet (okay, the BMW 6 series convertible does a pretty good job with this as well). Bottom line, this is just an exceptionally pretty European roadster with every Porsche mandated maintenance completed in the past year and of course, no IMS bearing issue, because that was never a problem in the 944. Bottom line, a lot of love has gone into this little roadster since I purchased her, but it's time to let go. Truth is, I have my eyes on another conquest and love is a fickle master...
