The R129 generation Mercedes SL-Class was produced from 1989 until 2001 using a modified and shortened version of the W124 sedan chassis. Performance tuning firm AMG partnered with Mercedes-Benz in 1990, and eventually, the R129 became the first AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz available directly through a dealer. This rare 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG 6.0 is one of an estimated 49 R129s produced before the official merger and is now being offered for auction by its second owner out of Switzerland showing approximately 99k kilometers (61k miles) on the odometer.

Finished in unique Black Pearl Metallic paint, this 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL AMG wears its original three-piece AMG OZ Racing wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tires at all four corners. The AMG 6.0 Conversion included exterior modifications like a model-specific trunk lid spoiler and a unique exhaust system. Other details include a removable aluminum black hardtop, a headlight washing system, and fog lights. The seller notes the vehicle was previously refinished in its original color for cosmetic purposes.

Inside, this Mercedes-Benz wears black leather upholstery with wood accents on the steering wheel, center console, and door panels. Unique AMG-badged instrumentation includes a 300-kph speedometer, a 7000-rpm tachometer, and an analog clock. Other details include Mercedes-Benz aluminum sill plates, a fire extinguisher, and a Blaupunkt head unit.

This 500SL underwent a complete 6.0 conversion by AM that included increasing the bore and stroke of the M119 V8 under the hood and installing AMG-specific rods and pistons and an AMG-specific crankshaft. As a result, power increases from 322 to around 370 HP (275 kW), and torque increases from 332 lb.-ft to approximately 405 lb.-ft (550 Nm). A 4-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, allowing for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in an AMG-estimated 5.8 seconds. The seller reports a recent service and inspection from a classic Mercedes-Benz workshop and numerous service invoices circa the mid-1990s from Mercedes-Benz Geneva and Mercedes-Benz Gstaad.

The sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know:  "One of said 49 original pre-merger 500 SL 6.0 AMG, converted between 1991 and 1993. Original AMG OZ three piece Aero 3 wheels!"

Hello everyone, unfortunately We do not have a mechanic right now to perform the measurement. Also we would like to add that the AMG stamping on an early conversion of 1989 1990 such as this one is much harder to locate and picture than on the more recent w124 6.0 conversions. As soon as we have a clear picture of that stamping we will submit it. We have also uploaded the picture of our 280kmh run with this 6.0 AMG which we believe is a more reliable proof than any stamping.

  • Cheninblanc (registered bidder) 12 monthsago

@Porschegstaad did you do the measurement?

@Porschegstaad Thank you for the quick responses and uploading the Swiss registration. I did not see the photo of the 280 kmh run, which indeed a 5.0L should not be able to do. And I wish we had roads like that in the USA! Looking forward to the video of the stroke measurement.

Couple you please see if you can locate and photograph the AMG stamp on the engine block? It will either be located at the front near the engine number, or on the back below the driver's side cylinder head. You can search Google for example photographs. Thanks

@SofiaLeo Hello, the car has never been in an accident or damaged. As stated the car has been subject to a full cosmetic respray. The first owner of the car that had it for over 30 years has used it as a daily for a period of time while living in London before moving to Switzerland. So inevitably the car received stone chips, little scratches etc.

@Porschegstaad has this car ever been in any accidents or had any paint work? Please post paint meter pictures. Thank you

@wheelandgood Furthermore We can perform a measurement of the stroke length tomorrow and upload a video and pictures of the whole process and result.

  • Porschegstaad (seller) 1 yearago

@wheelandgood Hello, Thanks for your question. Indeed the 6.0 conversions have two stickers in the engine bay from AMG showing the details of the M119 engine. This car was subject to a full restoration / repaint as stated in the description and the stickers removed at some point. These stickers can be easily ordered and placed back. But as you know many 500 owners have went for the cosmetics of 6.0 while adding the stickers so for us the best way to confirm that it is indeed a 6.0 was to test its maximum speed.

We went on the derestricted autobahn recently and managed to hit 280 kmh while still having some few rpm left. We have uploaded a picture of it. A 5.0 would never be able to reach such a speed.

Furthermore as you can see on the official Swiss registration document that we have uploaded, the car has 275 KW (and not 240 KW) and is officially a 500SL 6.0 AMG. This document is issued by the state following an official inspection.

@wheelandgood Hello The VIN ends with 004870, we have uploaded a picture of the VIN plate

  • wheelandgood (registered bidder) 1 yearago

The VIN in the listing ends in 003399; however, the VIN in the service records ends in 004870. Has the listing confused the engine number with the VIN? Can you please upload a photo of the VIN plate.

  • wheelandgood (registered bidder) 1 yearago

There is typically an AMG sticker in the engine bay showing the engine specifics. Can you please take a photo of this. Also, the 5.0 and 6.0 engines look identical, so the best way to verify the 6.0L displacement is by measuring the stroke length. Do you have any photos showing the length of the engine stroke confirming that it is a 6.0?
