We are pleased to present this 1991 Porsche 964 Carrera Targa finished in Polar Silver Metallic over a black leather interior.  With a recent engine-out reseal, $5k air conditioning upgrade and a few tasteful modifications, this Targa is not to be overlooked.  This well-sorted example of the lauded 964 generation is stated to be in great condition and shows approximately 69k miles on the odometer.

The Polar Silver Metallic finished on this Targa is stated to be in great overall condition (detailed images are available in the photo gallery along with recent paint meter readings).  In addition to the already distinctive body styling of this 964, a few additional details include a wrap around rear dome glass window, integrated euro-style foglights and aftermarket Cup 1-style alloy 5-spoke wheels that come wrapped in Yokohama tires.

Inside, this Targa sports a black leather interior that is also said to be in great condition.  Updates to this 964 include a MOMO steering wheel along with a $5k air conditioning upgrade.  All gauges and accessories are stated to be in working order.

Power comes from a numbers matching, naturally aspirated 3.6L flat-six engine.  The engine produces approximately 247 horsepower and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that features a new clutch.  Said to be in excellent running condition, a complete engine-out reseal was performed in May of 2015 which also included: a new flywheel, timing cover gasket replacement, valve cover gasket replacement, camshaft O-Ring & intermediate shaft O-Ring replacement, installation of an FVD Sport exhaust system, FVD ECU software upgrade, and Billet aluminum valve covers.  A more recent service comprised of the installation of Heavy Duty Bilstein and H&R Lowering Springs as well as all fluids and filters changed.

Included in the sale are a set of two keys, books, and service records. If you are in search of a Targa that retains the classic B-pillar design and has the refined driving experience exemplified in the 964 generation, this example is an excellent choice.

@rmurphy964 I just posted images of all the targa seals. They all look good. The front seal on passenger side has a small tear (see pic 161) This was probably caused from installing the top.

  • AuggieSouth (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

I viewed And Drove this Targa this week. She drives great and will make a great Sunday Driver. She presents very clean and tidy with a very few paint blemishes/touch up's. Really just one blend of 3-5" around the Porsche emblem on the hood. The linkage and clutch are precise and the engine sounds amazing! Doors all line up precisely and no signs of any bodywork. Buy with confidence!

@rmurphy964 The Targa top, both inside and out, is in great condition. No tears, rips, sagging, etc. There are some detailed pics of the outside in the gallery 32-36. The inside can be seen on 69-71. All the weatherstripping on the targa appear to be in good shape. I noticed that there are no detailed pics so I will take and post them now.

  • rmurphy964 3 years, 8 monthsago

What is the condition of the Targa top, inside and out? Does the lining droop and need to be refurbished. Also, how are the big weatherstripping seals at the top of the windshield and along the targa bar? Thanks.

I just uploaded more pics of the undercarriage. Per a bidder's request, they are details off the front bumper and front of the wheel wells connecting to the bumper.

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@RC-B-Rolling Ha! I see what you are saying. The point I was trying to make was that is that we wouldn't sell a car that we thought would have a major issue and not pass a PPI. Thanks you for the complements on the car. I'm going to miss not having it around.

  • RC-B-Rolling 3 years, 8 monthsago

@RC-B-Rolling Scratch the part about the service records. Just found them. Beautiful Targa, in a special order color Polar Silver! I own a 1991 964 C2 Coupe in black/tan which makes summer driving and exterior maintanence A bit more then my Polar Silver 993 C2S!

  • RC-B-Rolling 3 years, 8 monthsago

@VertexAuto Are you sure you wanted to make the comment “ The engine is in perfect health. No reason for us to think otherwise. If I was concerned with the health of the engine I would not allow for a PPI.” ? If the motor was in bad health would you not “allow” a PPI to hide the issues or ? It would also be helpful if you could post the repair order photos of the stated completed major repairs.

@UCFJWH sales/bids are not subject to PPI. A PPI or any other due diligence should be done prior to the end of the auction. We've had a few people stop by and inspect / drive the car. We can also take the car to any local shop of your preference for a PPI, or scheduled your mechanic/inspector some lift time with the car here. On the other hand, we care greatly for our reputation in the Porsche community. If you have any issues with the vehicle or how it was represented we will do our best to correct the issue.

I'll now work on undercarriage, original steering wheel, etc.

What a Targa, and I've been driving them since '84.

The 964 was the last model to have a real Targa......until they were brought back with the 991. And their re-emergence has had market implications. Several years ago, they were at least 15% below coupes: these days, not so much (-:

I love it that our Seller is being realistic about road noise and leaking. I love them to death, however, those that pretend you don't pay a bit of a price to drive a semi-open car make me wonder.

964 manual low-mile Targa.......that's a lot.......hope we get to see it change hands.

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@joebatters Correction! We have the original heat exchanger crossover pipe, but we don't have the original heat exchangers. However, we can get a set of used heat exchangers for $500.

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@Flat64ever The car does have catalytics installed. We also have the original heat exchanger crossover pipe, but we don't have the original heat exchangers. However, we can get a set of used heat exchangers for $500.

Is the Catalytic converter installed on the car or do you have the stock CAT along with the heat exchangers?

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@PheasantRun The engine is in perfect health. No reason for us to think otherwise. If I was concerned with the health of the engine I would not allow for a PPI. As I said, you are more than welcome to schedule a PPI either with the Vertex shop or any other local Porsche shop. I will incur the cost and time to take the car to get a PPI, but I can't pay for the PPI. A PPI is the responsibility of the buyer, not the seller.

  • PheasantRun (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

So you won't attest to the health of the engine having all the tools and mind trust at the ready??

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@PheasantRun Compression and leak down report can be scheduled with our service department or can be taken to your preferred local shop. You can call our shop and speak to Wayne (our Service Manager) to discuss time and cost or just let us know when and where we should take the car for your PPI.

Rotors and pads look to be in good condition. No squeaking or shaking while braking.

The car was corner balanced after the install of the HD Bilsteins and H&R springs. Those were recently installed and I'll upload pics of those today as well.

The original air pump and tool kit are also included in the sale.

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@jdeneufville As mentioned below, the stock steering wheel is included in the sale. It's in excellent condition. I'll add a pic of it later today.

  • PheasantRun (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Can you supply a compression and leak down report? As I see your firm supplies referb engines.
Could you mention condition of rotors and pads. SS brake lines??
Do you have the original tool kit and compressor?
Was the car corner balanced once the Bilsteins and K&R springs installed?

  • jdeneufville (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

What happened to the stock steering wheel?

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@joebatters 1 other thing I forgot to mention. The climate control unit was recently upgraded by ECU Doctors. The service records for that is also included. You can see the details of the upgrade here.

@JAB12 Thank you! I absolutely love this one! I had to talk myself out of keeping it. The color is amazing, the interior is squeaky clean, drives incredible, C2 version, and the AC is a dream to have. You are right, these are rare! Less that 1,300 C2 & C4 Targas ever made for the US. The last of the true Targa. OK, let me stop before I pull it off of Pcar Market. LOL!

  • joebatters (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

    Thanks for the response.
    Forgot to ask:
Exhaust looks to be completely aftermarket.
I can't tell if it has the heat exchangers ... looks like it does not.
I know you don't need heat down there but we do up in Chicago!
Does it come with original exhaust?

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@joebatters The "5k air conditioning upgrade" consist of AC Compressor, Evaporator, A/C Lines, Drier, Freon, and Labor. It's substantially colder than any other air cooled Porsche I've ever driven.

We were told that the front end damage was just a light bump that resulted in a few scratches that required a repaint of the front bumper. It's listed as Minor on the Car Fax which indicates that a new bumper was not needed.

The sale does include the original steering wheel.

As for the Targa top, under a Miami torrential rain it only leaked a tiny bit. Literally, just a few drops from the side of the driver's door. The car is not relatively quiet. These Targas can get noisy on the highway. There are a few forums out there on how you can quite them a bit.

Yes, the car can be seen, driven, PPI'd etc.

Thank you for all the questions.

    @VertexAuto Lol

  • VertexAuto (seller) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@charlesbennett $230,000 would have been a really strong start! Statement bid! ;)

  • JAB12 (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

@joebatters: On a 964 the A/C evaporator and condenser replacement plus refrigerant conversion is a $5K job in Miami. (Ask me
    How I know).
@Seller: car looks much better now, good luck with Auction. These are rare.

  • joebatters (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

What does a "5k air conditioning upgrade" consist of?
What was the extent of the front end damage?
Does sale include the original steering wheel?
    Does top leak?
At speed is car relatively quiet?
Is car able to be seen / ppi'd down if Miami?
    Thx

  • charlesbennett (registered bidder) 3 years, 8 monthsago

Bid was a mistake at $230,000. My bid should be $23,000. Thanks for correcting in advance.
