Sold exclusively in Japan from 1990 to 1995, the Toyota Sera features monocoque steel construction, a single-piece glass rear hatch, and unique butterfly doors which Gordon Murray credited as his inspiration for those of the McLaren F1. A total of 15,941 Toyota Seras were built, and this 1991 example is one of only a few to have been imported to the U.S. It comes finished in Medium Blue over a grey vinyl and cloth interior and comes equipped with an optional automatic transmission and the Super-Live Sound System (SLSS). It has also been modified with aftermarket wheels, fog lights, lowered suspension, Recaro bucket seats, and a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel. This rare Toyota Sera was acquired by the selling dealer in September 2023 and is now being offered for auction out of Virginia with approximately 127k kilometers (79k miles) on the odometer.

The Sera is a three-door hatchback characterized by its distinctive canopy design. Its forward-hinged butterfly doors feature upward-curved windows that form a glass roof section, and the wraparound rear hatch window is made from a single piece of glass providing excellent visibility. This example is finished in Medium Blue (8H7) and rides on aftermarket 15” Precious JDM wheels dressed in Nankang Ultrasport tires (1313). Other equipment includes aftermarket front fog lights, body-colored mudguards, polished dual exhaust tips, a gloss black rear spoiler, and “Sera” B-pillar badges. The seller notes some fading of the exterior trim pieces, scratches on the wheels, and minor rock chips on the hood.

The 2+2 cabin is appointed with grey vinyl and cloth upholstery accented by multicolor carpet floor mats. A pair of aftermarket Recaro bucket seats have been installed trimmed in black cloth with patterned fabric centers. Other accessories include an aftermarket three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, a TRD-branded horn button, an aftermarket accelerator pedal, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, removable sunshades, aftermarket tweeter speakers, an original Toyota stereo, and an optional Super-Live Sound System (SLSS). The seller indicates some scrapes on the dashboard behind the steering wheel, a tear in the front passenger seat bolster, a repaired tear on the driver’s seat cushion, and fraying at the edges of the removable interior roof panels. The rear speaker casing is broken, some cosmetic damage is present near the inner driver’s door, and the passenger side door does not stay open on its own.

The Sera is powered by a front-mounted 1.5-liter 5E-FHE inline-four engine rated at 104 HP and 97 lb.-ft of torque. This example is equipped with a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission that drives the front wheels and comes standard with a power-assisted rack and pinion steering and front disc brakes. The seller notes the suspension has also been modified with aftermarket components.

This sale will include a spare tire and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “One of less than 16,000 ever built, this 1991 Toyota Sera was a rewarding find for us. The vast majority of these vehicles were sold and registered in Japan, with only a fraction of that total finding their way into the hands of U.S. Collectors. This piece was well loved with a lot of character added by its previous owner!”
