Regarded among the great driving Porsche 911s of all time, the 964 Carrera RS was produced in limited numbers for the European market as a lightweight high-performance model derived from the Carrera Cup race car. A spiritual successor to the original 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, it features a spartan interior with minimal creature comforts as well as a pair of Recaro bucket seats, a stiffened chassis, shortened gear ratios, unassisted steering, magnesium wheels, a special seam-welded bodyshell, and a hand-built engine producing up to 260 HP. This 1992 example is finished in Grand Prix White and was originally delivered in Germany. Imported to the U.S. in August 2023 and accompanied by a well-documented history, this Carrera RS is now being offered for auction out of Texas with approximately 74k kilometers (46k miles) on the odometer.

Based on the bodyshell of the 964 Carrera 2 Coupe, the Carrera RS model features a special lightweight design with seam-welded panels, an aluminum front bonnet, and thinner glass windows. The car comes without a sunroof or fog lights and rides on lightweight magnesium 17” Cup Design wheels. Other details include aero mirrors, an RS-specific rear bumper, European-spec side marker lights, and a speed-activated rear spoiler. This example is finished in Grand Prix White and is said to have been professionally repainted about 10 years ago. The seller notes all the original factory-stamped body panels have been retained and paint meter readings are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the Carrera RS comes without rear seats, power windows, air conditioning, airbags, a radio, or sound insulation. The cabin is lined with special lightweight carpeting and features a pair of Recaro front bucket seats trimmed in black leather with multi-tone grey centers. Other accessories include red seatbelts, red cloth door pull straps, a leather-wrapped four-spoke “RS” steering wheel, a heater, a glovebox, manual window cranks, a quartz clock, and a rear window defroster. The seller notes that the original stamped bucket seats remain in place and an optional raised steering wheel hub came equipped from the factory.

The Carrera RS features a specialized 3.6-liter M64 engine with hand-matched pistons and cylinders, solid rubber mounts, a lightweight single-mass flywheel, and revised ECU programming. Up to 260 HP is sent to the rear wheels through a close-ratio 5-speed G50 manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The car shares its brakes with the 911 Turbo and features unassisted rack and pinion steering as well as a lower and stiffer suspension compared with the standard Carrera 2. The seller indicates a set of Bilstein PSS10 coilovers is included with the sale along with a binder of service records and the original stamped maintenance booklet.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, service records, Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “German-delivered 964 RS with a fully documented history and all matching drive train and body panels.”

We are down to the last hour and I will be standing by to answer any last minute questions. Please bid with great confidence. This is a very well kept and documented RS that drives amazingly. If you have never driven one you would not understand. A real experience. Porsche hit a home run on the 964 RS

@RumbleAuto that is incorrect. Fly yellow was named that because it attracted flys and other insects to the paint. They believe it is a giant flower. My family used to own a Ferrari in Fly yellow and anytime it was parked outside it attracted a lot of insects.

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 3 months, 1 weekago

this is the car to have if you want a real visceral driving experience same as the 92 Carrera Cup USA, nothin like piloting a short geared 2700 lb car with 260+ hp

  • TheBaron (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@seller Thanks for the heads up but one FLY is enough….. and actually, I’m not even a yellow guy… I much prefer Porsches wide selection of blues which I am fortunate enough to have on several in the past

I own a 964 RSR (3.8RS) in FLY yellow and I’m told it’s only one of two painted in that color. My RSR Is completely original paint with 4100 km. It’s pretty neat to see in person! I’ve tried several times to attach a photo to this comment but I’m not having much luck.

This 964 has more of a smile than the typical frown. Not too hard to fix. Why not fix it before listing and then you don’t have to keep the camera so high up with front pics.

  • RumbleAuto (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

In case you are wondering the word 'fly' in Fly Yellow actually means 'Ferrari Light Yellow' and there were definitely some 964s factory painted that color in the early 1990s. A dealer friend of mine currently owns a Fly Yellow 964 RS America, and it really is quite special to see.

  • flatcrank (registered bidder) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@richjs43 Porsche and Ferrari started to "copyright" (?) their paint colors, perhaps that was in the 90s. A few factory cars and a few aftermarket paint cars exist.
Google "fly-yellow Porsche" to see an RS in Fly Yellow (it's a "copyright" Ferrari color.)
The PCA site Rennbow shows "Ferrari Yellow":
    https://www.rennbow.org/color-wiki?modelYear=-1&model=&modelRarity=-1&searchInput=&colorFamily=12&go=search
Porsche restricts the use of numerous blues for example, just simple tints of otherwise ordinary colors and will reject a "paint to sample" request if it too closely resembles one of their iconic blues.

I guess it's all part of the tradition, but then again, Porsche has a habit of taking its historically significant names and numbers and re-using them on just about anything including its VW SUVs … : )

@nosubstitute4porsche @nosubstitute4porsche: The RS that I described in my post was indeed made by Porsche and was one of 3 imported to the US in that color. Truly unique car. I sold it when I retired back in 1996. Thanks for asking. Regretfully, I do not have any pictures of my car.

  • aussierover (seller) 3 months, 2 weeksago

@richjs43 did I understand that ferrari made a fly yellow RS AMERICA? from your post and it was at the porsche display? I must have misread. If not could you please send pictures? They were the good old days when all competition was fair and everyone got along..Glad you enjoyed the drive and many more smiles and miles

While I wish I could afford and bid on this awesome Porsche….Back in 1993 I attended the New York Auto Show. At the Porsche display there was a Ferrari Fly Yellow RS America on display. This car eventually was available at a local dealership, I had to good fortune to buy this RS……it was awesome to drive and creative a lot of attention wherever I went. I have owned many Porsches as well as other European and American sports cars. This was my favorite and I have regretted selling it, not for investment reasons, but for the pure enjoyment of owning a piece of Porsche history and driving enjoyment. Congrats to the seller for acquiring this vehicle, and best of luck to whoever is lucky enough to get it through Pcarmarket.

One of the truly great "modern but not too modern" 911's for driving. I had the in-namesake-only '94 RS America in the 90's. Manual steering rack, lovely drive-all-day seats, otherwise a Carrera with a goofy tail, thankfully no sunroof in mine, and an LSD. One of a few dozen 911s I've owned, one I regret selling.
If you were thinking about a retro restomod backdate 911, be it Singer or any of the dozens of impressive shops Singer has inspired to seek out people willing to pay large sums for a vehicle built on a reclaimed chassis with a relatively inexpensive bill of materials including leather in the engine compartment, well, get an original Pagani Zonda (if you can afford the insurance) or set your goal on owning a 964 RS and maybe developing a track day addiction. The 964 RS is the definitive driving experience which the others aspire to deliver. There's the 993 RS, a completely different rear suspension and a new 911 of its own right. Then you have the 996 RS and skip a decade to the 997.2 RS when things in the wet 911s came full circle, reconnected with the 993 and the 964 and things finally started to make sense again. I've had all of those and turbos and mid-engines, when they were affordable or even out of favor … remember the 964 was the ugly duckling for a quarter century before coming into its own … but if they were the same price (so there's no "well, I'll take the most expensive one, sell it and buy the other one and keep the stack of cash" and I had to choose between a 992 GT3 RS or 992 S/T or a 964 RS … it would be an excruciating decision for any 911 enthusiast, but I think most would choose the 964 RS.

p.s. no, I'm not a shill, I just have a low grade pcarmarket habit, and an enduring appreciation for the 911.
