It is our pleasure to present this 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS finished in Grand Prix White.  Widely regarded as one of the greatest air-cooled cars of all time, the 964 Carrera RS stays true to its roots with a lightweight design, minimalist creature comforts, and a fine-tuned chassis.  One of just over 2k examples built in total, this RS was originally delivered through Mizwa Motor Sales Corp., the sole Porsche distributor in Japan.  Having eventually made its way to the United States, this Carrera RS is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Georgia with approximately 47k kilometers (29k miles) showing on the odometer.

This RS is finished in Grand Prix White and features European-spec side marker lights and bumpers.  The RS shares the bodyshell of the standard Carrera 2 with revisions including a sunroof delete, fog light delete, an aluminum front bonnet, thinner glass windows, and special seam-welded panels.  The seller notes that the car has been previously refinished in its original color, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  The factory lightweight magnesium Cup Design wheels come dressed in a set of Continental Extreme Contact tires dated from 2019 with approximately 90% tread remaining.

The purist design of the RS is carried throughout the cabin with special lightweight carpeting, basic door panels with pull straps, and Recaro sport bucket seats with centers upholstered in deviated grey and white leather.  The air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, central locking system, rear seats, and sound system are also omitted from the cabin for the purpose of weight savings.  Aftermarket pedal covers have been installed along with Guards Red seatbelts. The condition of the interior is described to reflect the car’s mileage with only minor wear present on the seats, and the seller reports all instrumentation, lights, and electrical features to be working properly.

The 964 Carrera RS derives 260 HP from a type M64/03 3.6L engine.  A specially tuned version of the standard flat-six found in the Carrera 2, the M64/03 engine also features a lightweight flywheel, solid rubber mounts, a low-rating 36-amp/hour alternator, and a single cooling fan drive.  Power is fed to the rear wheels through a special 5-speed G50/10 manual transmission which offers closer gear ratios, steel synchros, and a limited-slip differential.  Compared with the standard model, the Carrera RS sits 40mm lower and utilizes stiffer springs and shock absorbers as well as a thicker front anti-roll bar, a thinner adjustable rear anti-roll bar, and a front strut cross-brace.  The front brakes were derived from the Turbo model while the rears came from the Carrera Cup racer.  The power steering system was removed and the two-stage ABS system was readjusted to provide better recovery during hard use.  Weighing in at just over 2,700 lbs., the RS can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 5 seconds.  This example is accompanied by an extensive collection of Japanese service records and a recent pre-purchase inspection was carried out by Porsche Pittsburgh. The seller notes that a full annual service will also be carried out prior to sale for the next owner.

This sale will include a set of two keys, the original owner's manuals and leather booklet, a collection of service records, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean title. A coveted sports car with a long and illustrious heritage, the 964 Carrera RS is one of the purest expressions of Porsche’s air-cooled 911.

@nosubstitute4porsche Good morning. Thank you for your question. The car is a full repaint. We are not sure when the repaint took place but can assure you the paint is in excellent condition with no discernible chips or scratches.

  • meritpartners (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@RFJ1961 good morning. We apologize for not getting to your question. Unfortunately we have no information on when the repaint happened.

We had the car inspected before we bought it and it shows no signs of being in an accident of any kind.

Sorry to see seller does not respond to my questions of almost four days ago, about the paint, paint meter and any indications of body work or damage. Either here or in Japan. Does not
    encourage my bidding at all.

  • meritpartners (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@RonCT Thank you for the information. The car has already gone through the import process and has been titled in the US. We are going to put up a picture of the title today to show this. It is our understanding that since the car has gone through the importation process, is over 25 years old, and has a US title, there should be no issue registering the car.

@dealmaker599 Good morning. There was some confusion on our end about the dealer fee. We agree that it is not in the spirit of PCar Market and have had it removed. There is no dealer fee associated with this auction. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

  • dealmaker599 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

I would like an answer from Pcarmarket and the dealer about the 499 fee. I would like to increase my bid and and bid competitively for this car but do not understand a dealer fee. Can we get clarification?

According to DMV, in order to register in CT, I would be required to provide federalization paperwork. Here are a few quotes that expand on the checklist:

"No registration can be issued until the applicant presents the US Customs form, and the EPA and DOT approval letters.

"If the vehicle is used, the owner must present the proper ownership documentation (i.e., foreign equivalents of "Title" Certificates, such as the German Fahrzugbrief). Documentation must not show any break in continuity of ownership. The EPA and DOT letters are required to be a permanent part of the ownership record. If the seller does not have the required letters, the buyer must contact the US DOT and US EPA for copies of the letters."

The posted document appears to list the export date as June 25, 2013, which means the car was 21 when it left Japan. And if it came to the US then, I would imagine it went through the federalization process. I understand the rules change at 25, but I'm just trying to avoid any arguments with DMV by requesting the import paperwork as none is posted in the listing.

Also, would be nice to see the PPI mentioned.

@RonCT Homeland Security showed up at my house and took my Land Rover Defender 90 - along with 42 others that day, just sayn. Google it.

  • burnrubr (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Should have no issues titling this car anywhere in the US it's over 25 years old and exempt from any EPA/DOT requirements! If the current title is from any of the US State any other State has no business prying where it came from! It's a different story if the car was never titled in the US. I have a 92 Cup Car and this one is a little more civilized and better equipped than mine but the driving dynamics should be close. Congrats to the lucky new owner!

A few days ago I sent the below message request. Without federalization paperwork, I would not be able to title / register / drive the car on public streets. You might have a clear title of ownership, but in CT that does not mean you can register and operate it. I see the export certificate, but no import paperwork, translated documents, nor US (English language) title. There should be an import / federalization decal or plaque (certifying the vehicle meets US standards) on the door jamb - can you provide a photo? Thanks!

Hi, I'm interested in bidding and don't see any reference to the required DOT, EPA, and Customs information. Per CT DMV, In order for me to register and be able to drive the car, I would need: EPA approval letter DOT approval letter U.S. Customs Entry Summary form 7501. Please also provide the PPI you reference in the listing. I'd ask for the service records, but unless they are in English I don't know they will mean much to me. Thanks, Ron

It would be useful to have paint meter readings on the full paintwork. When it was repainted, was it here or in Japan? Do you have the paintwork repair order? Was there any body work or crash work done at the time of paint. Were windows taken out and trim removed?

Is there in the paperwork from Japan any indication of body damage or substantial motor or transmission work done at that time?

Does pcarmarket allow dealers to add on $499 or any fees? This is in addition to the pcarmarket fee? Seems NOT to be in the spirit of pcarmarket. Frustrating add on via dealers whim. A lot of states limit these fees. In NJ they are not limited, so when I go to sign my final contract and the dealer informs me that they can not and will not remove the fee, I have them reduce the price of the car by the same amount of their "dealer fee". Hate the fee!!

  • meritpartners (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@mc11040 Thank you for your question. The car has a US title so it can be registered in any state.

  • meritpartners (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Maggio.1 Thank you for your question. We have title in hand.

  • mc11040 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Do you know if this car can be registered in CA? Thanks.

  • Maggio.1 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

    Title?

@skimaker Thank you for your question. The car was registered in Pennsylvania before we purchased it.

  • skimaker (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Is this RS registered and licensed in a US state? Or just a 'Clean Title"?

  • dealmaker599 2 years, 7 monthsago

  • dealmaker599 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Why is there a $499 dealer fee?
