The final evolution of Porsche’s front-engine two-door sports car, the 968 was introduced for the 1992 model year featuring newly designed bodywork and a 3.0-liter 16-valve inline-four engine. This example is one of 649 North American Coupe versions produced for the inaugural model year and is finished in Grand Prix White over a Cashmere Beige interior. It comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transaxle, 16” alloy wheels, power seats, a sunroof, automatic climate control, and cruise control. It was acquired by the seller as a one-owner car in May 2023 and is accompanied by an extensive collection of service records dating back to the original purchase. It has since undergone some refurbishment with original Porsche Classic parts as well as the fully reversible installation of a new Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) head unit and speakers. This 968 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts.

The 968’s design was an evolution of the outgoing 944 S2 model and featured a smoother rear end with more rounded taillights as well as a new front end with 928-style pop-up headlights. This 1992 example is one of 299 North American Coupes to have come finished in Grand Prix White. Equipment includes a glass rear hatch with a window wiper, a black rear spoiler, front fog lights, headlamp washers, an electric sunroof, and black bumperettes. It rides on 16” five-spoke alloy wheels dressed in Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires from 2017. The CARFAX report shows the vehicle was deemed a total loss by an insurance company following the previous owner backing into a pole. Some corrosion is also noted on the left rear hatch areas as well as some scuffs on the underside of the driver’s side mirror. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARFAX report.

The cabin features power-adjustable seats trimmed in Cashmere Beige leather with matching carpets and door panels contrasted by a black upper dashboard, center console, and four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Accessories include rear seats with folding backrests, power windows and mirrors, automatic climate control, cruise control, a quartz clock, a digital temperature display, and a locking glovebox. Refurbishment completed by the current owner in 2023 included the replacement of the door handle and rear hatch seals, rear hatch pin seat gaskets, a new rear wiper motor, new carpet floor mats, and an upgraded Porsche Classic (PCCM) head unit with new speakers. The seller notes the original rear hatch cover is included and all gauges and accessories are fully functional apart from the outside temperature display. The odometer was reportedly inoperative between 2019 and 2023 and the car’s true mileage is unknown.

This 968 is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-four DOHC engine with 4-valves-per-cylinder and VarioCam variable valve timing. As much as 236 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transaxle. Performance features include force-sensitive power steering, front & rear stabilizer bars, and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). An extensive collection of service records is included and the seller reports there are no outstanding maintenance items at this time.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, an air pump, a car cover, service records, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “I bought this car thinking I could use a project car. I had no idea that this would be one that was meticulously maintained by the one, original owner. He loved this car. This 968 was garaged and covered at all times. Extensive service records since 1992 are included. I would love to keep this, but I need the space for a real renovation project. This car definitely turns heads when you drive it. I just hope to find someone who loves a 968 that looks like it just left the showroom.”

Great looking car but the Carfax report as a total loss hurts, lots. I suggest posting some readings with an electronic paint thickness gauge (Elcometer) to verify the paint is original. If you don't have one, most used car dealers do.

@Crumbs Completely agree. There's literally no record of this "total loss" other than what CarFax says. I called CarFax and asked, and they have no record to back it up. Not saying it's not true, but it was over 25 years ago. CF also had this listed as 3 owners which in fact I bought it from its single owner (he had transferred the title between his business and himself). The shop in Kansas who sold it to me (European Car Company, LLC) stored and maintained this car for its one owner. Anyway, as you'll see from the photos, the body is truly immaculate. The only corrosion is near the hatch seals and driver rear bumper. Finally, the folder of maintenance records is like an inch thick. Very thorough.

I don't understand how the car can have both a clean title and be declared a total loss in the past.

I experienced a similar situation. When I attempted to register a car it was flagged as prior salvage, as my purchase was the first sale following Katrina prompting lawmakers to create a national database to check for title "cleaned" cars. I purchased a known car from a family friend who had had it for a long time with a clean title. The car had a similar history in the distant past. Cosmetic damage, no frame damage, but insurance wrote it off due to the deprecation curve. Family friend knew the car had the bumper replaced, but neither of us of knew it would trigger clean->salvage if sold. I don't understand why this didn't happen when you registered the car in May.

@olaugh The timing belt and balance shaft belt were replaced in November 2016. Inspection report coming.

  • olaugh (registered bidder) 5 months, 4 weeksago

Last timing belt change? Any oil leaks?

  • charlie_boston (seller) 5 months, 4 weeksago

@Glickster I'll get undercarriage pics from the inspection report uploaded. WHat's the concern with the door handles? They work great and I replaced both left and right rubber seals with OEM Porsche parts.

  • charlie_boston (seller) 5 months, 4 weeksago

@Dom33 Legit. Carfax is indeed silly.

  • charlie_boston (seller) 5 months, 4 weeksago

Hey everyone. Seller here. The listing went live a bit too soon. I was asked to get some additional interior photos and the inspection my shop is doing. I'll have those tomorrow. Also, all the emails about the listing ended up in my Junk folder. Sorry for the delay! Be back soon.

  • Dom33 (registered bidder) 5 months, 4 weeksago

FYI: If you search the VIN in Vin analytics (The same VIN from the Carfax) it will run it as a 1992 Porsche 968, carfax is silly

Can you please provide underbody photos.
Looks good but damaged history, under body photos, and lack of detailed service info last 10 yrs is hurting it.
