We are pleased to present this one-of-a-kind 1994 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 widebody.  The result of years-long planning and thousands of hours of meticulous labor, this rare U.S.-spec factory widebody Carrera 4 was transformed under the direction of its owner in Canada with the goal of creating an emotive, visceral, and tactile driving experience.  A true no-expense-spared build, this 964 was commissioned to Coachwerks in Victoria, B.C. for a complete exterior backdate.  A custom rear decklid was created, the sunroof was deleted, and composite reinforced aluminum panels were sourced from DP Motorsports in Germany.  The car is finished in a custom-formulated 1964 VW Beetle color over a bespoke RS-style brown and black leather interior.  The suspension was completely overhauled with KW V3 dampers, custom springs, H&R sway bars, and more.  Exhibiting unprecedented attention to detail while boasting over 300 lbs. of weight savings, this custom Carrera 4 widebody has traveled less than 1,000 km since completion and is now being offered by its owner out of Ontario, Canada accompanied by a vast collection of invoices and thousands of photos documenting the incredible build process.

Representing one of only 267 U.S.-spec widebody 964’s produced for the model year, this 1994 example was brought to the specialists at Coachwerks in British Columbia where it was thoroughly disassembled, stripped, and refinished in a custom 5-layer shade of Powder Blue derived from a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle color.  The entire front end is preserved under clear paint protection film. The bumpers, hood, and decklid were replaced with composite reinforced aluminum panels provided by DP motorsports in Germany.  The rear decklid was reinforced with steel, custom shaped, vented, and paired with a new 1970s-style OEM Porsche aluminum insert.  The seller notes that the original decklid was painted to match and will also be included in the sale.  The sunroof was removed and replaced with a custom fabricated steel panel, the exterior brightwork was redone in brushed chrome, and modern lighting was installed including Audette platinum JW LED headlights.  It rides on a set of custom forged Singer-style 17” Fikse Fuchs wheels measuring 8” wide in front and 10” wide in the rear.  These wheels were designed to be extremely strong and lightweight and feature custom Porsche center caps along with 235/275 Continental Extreme Contact tires.

Inside, the cabin has been completely redone and fitted with deeply bolstered Recaro CS Sportster bucket seats covered and stitched in sumptuous saddle brown Italian fine leather.  The headliner was reupholstered in Alcantara and custom brown leather RS-style door panels were installed which feature 1969 VW Beetle elbow rests and handles, redone in nickel and leather.  The dashboard and MOMO Prototipo steering wheel are wrapped in black leather as well as the upper door panels. The console stack was removed, and all electronics were updated with modern hardware along with new switchgear added to the custom binnacle underneath the dash.  A custom adjustable short shifter was created by Sleepers in California and paired with a custom shift knob made from Brazilian Granadillo wood.  The sound system was upgraded with new Focal speakers, a Rockford amplifier, and a Porsche Classic radio. Completing this timeless interior are a set of custom leather floor mats with contrast stitching and a bespoke handmade leather tool bag containing a mix of OEM Porsche tools.

The original air-cooled 3.6L flat-six engine was thoroughly inspected, tested, and found to be free of leaks while offering excellent compression.  The oil lines, oil cooler, and A/C components were newly replaced, and the secondary muffler was bypassed with a Dansk swan neck exhaust pipe.  All four wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed G50 manual transmission.  The steering rack, bushings, and power steering components were replaced and a Rothsport steering rack brace was installed.  The suspension was completely overhauled with KW V3 dampers, custom springs, H&R sway bars, custom tie rods, and new control arms bushings. The wheel bearings and brake rotors were also replaced during the build and the car was precisely tuned and tested by the experts at Sports Car Boutique for neutral to rear-biased handling while maintaining supple road comfort and tightness for spirited driving.  The seller claims a weight savings of approximately 320 lbs., which allows the driver to make the most of the car’s original power plant.  Less than 1,000 km are said to have been driven since completion and a comprehensive collection of build invoices and photos will be provided to the next owner.

This sale will include a set of two keys, a custom leather toolkit, and a clean title.  Following two years of planning, a year and a half long build process, and thousands of hours of highly skilled labor, this rare 964 widebody has been transformed into something truly one-of-a-kind.  For any passionate air-cooled driving enthusiast, this Carrera 4 presents an opportunity that is not to be missed.

    @Bela Hello.
It was not placed on the dyno , but the original compression tests etc were all perfect. After driving the car with the weight loss, I wasn't really concerned. I will do it eventually.
Original car 3194 lbs, and 319 lb 11 oz was removed. Haven't weighed it since.

  • 9000RPM 2 years, 10 monthsago

Had a huge pleasure meeting and chatting with Vince yesterday for his absolutely fascinating and gorgeous custom build. Vince is such a humble gentlemen who cares and focuses on details with high standard on every component of his car, a true enthusiast.

You really have to see the car in person to appreciate the 5 stages paint job, color changes in different angle and lighting condition. The curves are formed perfectly by the combination of the original 964 widebody and the custom bumpers.

Vince took me for a quick drive (with classic music on;) ) and all I can say is, the riding quality is just as good as it looks.

Bid with confidence, you do not want to miss this piece of art.
    Well done and GLWA Vince!

@Imthedecidah Thank you for the kind words. Everyone will place a value on something based on their own criteria, which is so different for all of us. The ROI on this build was never going to be in dollars, but in the experience. As I stated in the opening line of the description, my goals were an immersive emotive and visceral experience , and this has surpassed that. As for dollars, the reserve is far below the actual cost of getting there. You guys have been very kind to me and it validates the quality of the workmanship and final product. My gratitude to you.

As the last few hours of the auction approaches, I want to thank everyone for their questions and comments. I could speak about this car for days. I know it is difficult to appreciate everything about this car with just pictures and videos, but I want you all to know that every detail of this build was obsessed about pathologically. From the 356 mirrors, to the hand crafted Brazilian hard wood horn buttons , to the curve of the bumper cutouts which match the curve of the hood lines, to the numerous times we removed and reinstalled the interior carpet and sound insulation just to get me the perfect mix of engine noise and cabin isolation - no detail too small for obsession.
    Thank you.

@GentlemanRacer @GentlemanRacer, thank you for the explanation. The car is definitely well thought out and a beauty.

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Miamicane94 These are aesthetic features to give the overall look of a RS type car. It combines elements of current and past iterations. Just like the original bumper, some of the air may be directed to the oil cooler or underbody, but likely of no significant benefit. The actual design was my own, and I spent days on AutoCAD getting the angles and look perfect. If you look closely , the inner vertical border is exactly in line with the outer bonnet (hood) edge so that it forms a seamless line as your eyes follow from top to bottom. The lower edge of the cutout follows the same arc as the upward curve of the lower spoiler lip as it approaches the edges. The bumper was first reinforced with steel in the area of the proposed cutout and then the hole made . The mesh was then attached to the steel and not the bumper directly , so it will never “pop” out or warp. Everything was over engineered . Everything was important .

@Miamicane94 I am not sure, but any broker should easily be able to take care of the paperwork. The fact that it is a US car, means less paperwork and no duty. It is also over 25 years old, so even easier to import. It has a CAT so it is eligible for emissions testing if needed.
My friend bought my GT3RS last year and shipped to Florida. He submitted the paperwork himself and arranged transportation. The transportation itself took 2-3 days depending on who you choose and availability. It shipped about 5 days after he did his paperwork. I just quickly looked up some brokers in the US and prices for taking care of everything except shipping itself is between 1-1.5K . Hope that helps. I have a few contacts here, and can help where I can. Dealers ship cars everyday between CAN/US. Maybe PCAR even knows. Thank you

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Dennyleeb Hello. The car can be stored yes. It is tended to in a climate controlled facility with many other rare autos, so it is well cared for.

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@TeamOrange Hi there. The car is currently with me, so I don't have access to a hoist, but I did go and take some iPhone pics of the underneath as best as I could. I have sent to PCAR for posting. There are also pics of the underside on the photo library to the right. That underbody hasn't changed except for cleaning, and the replacement parts of the oil lines, brackets, oil cooler etc. KW dampers and tie rods etc are all new. You will see some pics of the suspension, wheels off in the additional stuff I sent to pCAR> I am not sure if they work weekends, as I have sent numerous photos to them this weekend, which I don't see posted. Hopefully you will have them tomorrow. I may not be able to get any more pictures as I don't want to remove the wheels with out the proper tools and hoist. Each wheel costs $3000 dollars!!

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@turboboostin Hi There. I am not sure what you mean. There are over a hundred photos with this auction. If there is something specific you wish to see, let em know and I will send them to PCAR and they post it at their convenience. Thank you

@Niloccmc Hi. Please look at the 3rd page of the CarFax. Notice that on the left column at date 10/14/2015 the mileage is 129,052 in US miles. Then on 09/30/2016 it states 81,884 US Miles, but the ODO reading was 131,780 KM. This was a data error entry that mistakenly put KM instead of miles and the system converted it to miles. Hence the error continues to be carried along, even though I registered the car in Ontario and stated the actual ODO readings as 131,303 miles.....the government will do what they do and make it difficult for everyone. In any case, the actual miles are seen in my pics and video, use that as current accurate; it is a US car and well, it is easy to follow the rest logically. Thank you for asking. I verified this when I purchased the car

  • Niloccmc (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Lovely car. Can you explain the mileage inconsistencies on the car fax ? Please.

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Bored Thank you for asking. All receipts, invoices, detailed shipping costs, etc will go to the next keeper of this car. While it is easy to keep track of hard costs, the years of planning and designing a car like this make a final cost an illusive number. Lets just say, that I have obsessed over the planning and details for over a year.
The cost that Singers are fetching these days are double what they cost to build.
My costs to execute are between what other 964 backdates recently went for and the original cost of a Singer. Singer quality (not Singer design focus) was my goal and for anyone who saw this car in person, the comparisons have been humbling and most flattering.
    Thank you

@Sebring Thank you for the vote of confidence. I chose them for that exact reason. I flew out there to meet them and took a day touring their facilities and observing their craft. Truly mesmerizingly great! One could eat off their floors and the curated pedigree that graced their halls were museum quality. It was easy to commission them for the work.

  • GentlemanRacer (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@jdm Thank you for the kind compliments.
I can confirm that the engine was not rebuilt. Other than mileage, it runs perfectly and strong. All the necessary tests done before and after purchase. The intent was always to rebuild and upgrade the engine to a 3.8 RS cam style, for more primarily more torque, but those plans got halted when the pandemic hit. I had narrowed done my list of builders to Rothsport in Oregon, Patrick Motorsports in Arizona and Ninemeister in England. Because of the border controls I had to wait. Truth be told, with he reduced weight and tuned suspension, the drive is sublime and wanting for very little. I will leave the choice of engines to the eventual new keeper of this car. I have detailed quotes from both Patrick Motorsports and Ninemeister that I will share with the new owner and/or make an introduction if they decide to go that route. Thank you
