Up for auction is this 1995 BMW E36 318i Convertible finished in Bright Red over a Sand Beige leatherette interior.  The third generation of BMWs 3-series compact executive car, the E36 saw great success throughout its production run and was named in Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for every year it was sold.  Delivered new in Texas, this E36 remained under the care of its original owner for most of its life before it was eventually acquired by the third and current owner in June of 2021.  Now showing just over 43k miles on the odometer, this well-preserved E36 is being offered for auction by its owner out of California.

This 318i is finished in Bright Red (314) with black lower body trim, side protection moldings, and a black convertible soft top.  The bodywork of the E36 was designed by Pinky Lai who was also responsible for the styling of the Porsche 996, 986, and 987 Cayman.  This example is reported to have been garage-kept and maintained in very good overall condition apart from a few small dings throughout the exterior.  Additional images are provided in the photo gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This E36 rides on factory 16” Style 13 wheels dressed in Michelin tires.

Inside, you will find a well-presented Sand Beige leatherette interior with driver amenities including air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows.  An upgraded Alpine radio has been installed and the seller reports all gauges and accessories to be fully functional apart from the outside temperature display.

This E36 is equipped with an M43B18 1.8L inline 4-cylinder engine that generates up to 138 HP and 129 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed automatic transmission.  The car has been driven approximately 1k miles since the current owner’s purchase earlier this year, and CARFAX shows annual service to have been carried out ever since with an alignment performed in February of 2021 along with the replacement of the front struts. The car also received a California smog pass in July of 2021.

This sale will include a set of two keys and remote fob, the original window sticker, owner's manuals, toolkit, spare tire, and a clean title.  Showing low miles and a clean two-owner history, this 318i offers a fantastic value for any enthusiast in search of a well-presented E36.

Thank you everyone. My son and I are very excited to get back into the E36 convertible. It's what I was driving when he first got his license. Great auction, and thank you Coachmule for taking such good care of the car.

@justneedsatune Thats so awesome my brother bought one new in 1983 unfortunately he passed away a few years ago but I can tell you as a young man he and I would drive that car everywhere even across Canada once pre-covid years and the Southen route of the USA hard to find with low miles. True driving machines.Cheers Coachmule

My dad bought one of these new in 1994. We still have it and I spent the last year freshening it up some. It still drives basically like new with 160k miles. These are really solid cars (aside from some interior parts which, it turns out, are mostly still available from BMW!) that are easy to work on. The m42 is probably the easiest BMW engine ever and it just loves to rev, and gets amazing gas mileage. This will be a really fun car for somebody!

@87911cab no fluid leaks , top doesn’t leak , original radio was replaced by first owner who I understood threw it away. But he kept everything else , tool kit, owners manual , original spare. The air blows cold in it originally 134a super cold. Well it’s 72 here and a 75% humidity but I’m about one block from the beach so we get a nice ocean breeze or as I call it the big blue refrigerator.

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule that’s great how about the original radio and any fluid leaks under the car? 95 and humid here in VA, that ride up the coast sounds wonderful!

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@87911cab The rear window is a little foggy guess the original owner didn't know the old trick of a good beach towel. No drips no leaks, I did drive it up the coast a little yesterday to run and errand nothing like it. Also the top does not leak when you wash it. Cheers Coachmule

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Just a few more quick questions; what is the condition of the top and rear window? In the pictures it looks like the rear window is scratched / foggy, that may just be a reflection but wanted to double check. Do you have the original radio? Are there any leaks or drips under the car? Thanks

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@87911cab yeah I agree I even went to my MacBook Pro and looked it ,looks original to me honestly I was shocked when you said that so I started calling people and looking close he’s like no way it’s not original fit and finish . Cheers Coachmule

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule @Coach-mule thanks, looking at the pictures again I think it is my mistake, just normal spots on the undercarriage. I appreciate you checking on it.

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule I called the guy that had the car at his warehouse where the car was sold he told me that he believes it’s the original paint also. The car has a clean car fax, all the gaps and fits on the doors, hood, trunk and other areas are all the same. I’ve looked at probably 50 of these I can tell pretty fast if it had damage everything seems correct for the miles. Coachmule

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@87911cab I was told it was original paint but I can’t swear to it. Where is the overspray ? I don’t recall seeing any if someone did paint it they did a great job because all of the original stickers and plates are there. The first owner always kept it in the garage and sold it to the second guy who barely drove it but also kept it in the garage. It has a clean car fax and I’ve looked at a lot of painted cars and this doesn’t seem like it was repainted. I can FaceTime tomorrow if you like , as stated I have integrity and sold on here before so I’d be happy to go over any area of the car you’d like. Hope that helps , cheers Coachmule

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule I know the feeling, fat fingers and all. To the best of your knowledge has the car had any paintwork done? Looks like there may be some overspray on the chassis.

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule sorry for the grammar errors trying to send a message on my phone with small font. That’s not hot rodded and it’s a 560sl not 570 getting old is hell. ?

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@87911cab well her dad had a 1973 convertible, trust me I’d rather keep this baby like I said it took me a long time to find a low mileage not hot toddies or wrecked E36 they are becoming so popular not as popular as a 560SL but also not the cost. I’ve know guys to buy 570’s and spend 5k here in California trying to get them smogged. This one has a current California smog and registration. Tell the wife your headed for milk and come and buy it great road or take her for a surprise west coast trip with the top down.

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule thanks for the quick response. I wish I could come by to see it but I live in Virginia so that would be a heck of a trip. Unfortunately when I consider the car I also have to consider the cost of shipping and buyers fee for the auction, just trying to sort through all that. Your wife has good taste, I had an XKE years ago, most beautiful car I’ve owned but also the most troublesome, guess that goes with the territory!

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@87911cab I don’t know how old the tires are, I knew the guy who was helping the second owner sell it as he’s pretty wealthy and didn’t want to have to deal with anyone the guy owns a very reputable high end restoration car company in San Diego. I’ve driven the car about a 1000 miles it’s a great car it took me about 6 months to find this one without damage or crazy miles. I honestly would keep it but my other half wants a different car for our home in Vegas a series 3 xke convertible. I love how it drives and has almost zero computers. Cold air, cruise works gets great gas mileage these are getting harder to find with low miles. You’re welcome to come and inspect it or hit the contact seller button I’ll do a FaceTime video I’ve sold on this web site before so they know I’m reputable. Cheers Coachmule

  • 87911cab (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

Nice looking E36, I’m interested. How old are the tires? Did you have a prepurchase inspection done when you bought it? Any issues that a buyer should be aware of?

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

I had Pcarmarket upload a cold start video, drive video, photo of 2 keys and original window sticker showing all of the options. Happy bidding.

  • CABRIOLET-INT (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@Coachmule Thank you very much I am interested.

  • Coachmule (seller) 2 years, 8 monthsago

@CABRIOLET-INT Good afternoon, as stated in the write up, I'm the third owner, the dings are pretty minor and no panels need replacement. We bought this for our house out of state but the wife decided after we purchased it to buy a different car, I looked for an older E36 for awhile with low miles and this one met my expectations. I didn't want anything power like the top, just windows and air conditioning and cruise control that all work. I sent Pcarmarket a picture of the window sticker , two keys and a cold start video and a drive video. These were and are awesome cars and great on gas. If your interested in bidding I can do a walk around video on facetime. Good luck bidding.

    Coachmule

  • CABRIOLET-INT (registered bidder) 2 years, 8 monthsago
