Up for auction is this 1995 Porsche 968 Coupe finished Cobalt Blue Metallic over a Cashmere Beige partial leather interior. Among the very last of Porsche’s two-door transaxle sports cars, this example is one of only 259 North American coupes built for the 968’s final year of production.  It came factory equipped with a 10-speaker sound system, an 8-way power-operated driver’s seat, cruise control, a power-operated sunroof, a rear window wiper, and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Within the last 20k miles, this 968 is reported to have undergone extensive service including an engine reseal, new coolant hoses, timing belt replacements, a new battery, refreshed suspension, and much more. Now with approximately 144k miles showing on the odometer, this 968 is being offered for auction by its owner out of Ohio.

This 968 comes finished in Cobalt Blue Metallic with factory optioned protective side moldings and a rear window wiper as well as a custom silver-painted spoiler and mirror housings.  The car was originally finished in Midnight Blue Metallic and was refinished in the current shade of Cobalt Blue Metallic by a previous owner.  Some cosmetic imperfections are depicted in the photo gallery including several paint chips and touchups as well as some scuffs on the passenger side wheels.  Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  This 968 rides on a set of 17” Cup Design wheels with colored Porsche center caps and newer EP tires.

The cabin comes trimmed in Cashmere Beige partial leather with a contrasting black dashboard and wood trim.  Some cracks are present on the dashboard and the rubber rear hatch seal is recommended for replacement due to age.  Many of the original incandescent lights have been upgraded with LED bulbs and several of the interior trim pieces were replaced under prior ownership.  The full power driver’s seat is said to remain fully functional along with the air conditioning, aftermarket radio, and all other accessories.  The operational status of the CD player has not been confirmed.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.0L inline four-cylinder engine that sends up to 236 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transaxle. Using this drivetrain, the 968 is capable of accelerating from 0-60 MPH in approximately 6 seconds with a top speed of over 150 MPH.  Service records are said to be available dating back 12 years with notable items including include an engine reseal, new timing belt, water pump, engine mounts, new clutch master and slave cylinder in 2013 at 125k miles, a front engine reseal and timing belt replacement in 2015 at 131k miles, and new tires, battery, a four-wheel alignment, and new taillights in 2020 at 143k miles.

This sale will include a car cover, a collection of service records, a toolkit, spare tire, air compressor, and a clean title.  Vintage transaxle Porsches have become more sought after than ever, do not miss your chance to become the next owner of this 6-speed 968 Coupe.

@tompinky Congrats on the auction purchase!
You bought this 968 at a very good price IMHO.
Looking forward to further contact and to arrange delivery.

@trharlan My dad the EE prof started a business making special test equipment for traffic signal technicians in 1987. I was in Cleveland designing tire manufacturing equipment at the time.

I got into a "disagreement" with management at the consulting firm, and dad recruited me to run the business so he could go back to design work. That was 1992. Annual sales $400K in 1992. I was the 4th employee. Best decision ever.

I believe we are the 3rd largest manufacturing firm in Athens County. Which is not really much in the big scheme, but I get to live in flyover country, on a 60 acre horse farm, which I truly love.

This 968 is my 6th Porsche, the last one was a used 2015 Macan S. Great SUV for the first 2 years then nothing but trouble. Dealer is 80 miles away and a $400 towing bill each way. Spent $5000 in 4 months, and that was enough. Sold it back to the dealer, and decided to go back in time to get away from computers.

This 968 was an impulse buy, and really at the wrong time for me based on building space and farm projects. Prior to the Macan, I had 2 911 SC coupes, a 79 and then an 81, which I loved to track drive, especially at Mid-Ohio. The next car will be an air/oil cooled flat 6 G- body again. Maybe if I sold some BTC, I could justify a track-ready M-50 G Body coupe. PCARmarket brings a few of these up for auction every month.

As stated earlier, this 968 is way too nice and original to flog around a track.

@Sjmckim9 Yes the a/c was converted to R134a by the prior owner.

@trharlan Grew up in C'bus until 10 ,then moved to Athens. Dad was a EE Prof at OSU then OU.
Went to Athens HS - like Joe Burrow. Just 40 years earlier.

Seller, has the AC been updated to 134a?

  • trharlan (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@knobby you a prof, a student who never left, or just an "ordinary" person in Southern Ohio's extraordinary city?

  • Knobby (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@tompinky The roof panel latch mechanism is now working as intended again.

  • Knobby (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@tompinky I think the 928 would make an awesome stablemate! Thank you for your bid.
Full Disclosure: I had a nearby prospective bidder and 944 expert stop over yesterday, and we discovered the roof panel will latch and unlatch, but not raise the panel as it should. I am working to get this resolved by the end of the auction week, and will keep all of you on this auction board informed.
In any case, there will be an equitable resolution . You have my word on this.

This would look beautiful next to my 1995 968 Cab and 6 speed and my 1990 928 auto.

Bid in the amount of $14,968

  • Rare9 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Knobby Thanks @Knobby for the quick answer. Totally respect that.

  • Knobby (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@Rare9 I want to go back to Track days with PCA and BMW clubs. This is not the car for stripping out interiors, subjecting to bumps and bruises. I really want an older "analog" G-body 911. Plus, I have a Hay baler to take apart and put back together again, and I do not have adequate storage for this 968.

  • Rare9 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Beautiful car, always great to see these on the market. Got my 968 from from here two months ago, love it. Can I ask why are you selling after less than a year. GLWA.

  • JBoxerGT2 (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Clean looking 968, original tool kit and air pump is nice to see. Cobalt Blue is a great color and being one of a few coupes sold in the U.S. it's to bad it's not the Midnight Blue. It's only an original once! It presents itself well maintained and cared for though.

    Welcome to our auction!
You obviously have a keen eye for future appreciation and value. This unmolested 1995 968 6-speed Coupe has caught your attention.
If rarity is considered a positive indicator, this Porsche is in good standing. According to "Original Porsche 924/944/968" by Peter Morgan (c 1998) 258 coupes and 366 cabrios were exported to the US/Canadian market for the 1995 model year. This book is included in the sale, and will make you an instant expert on your next Porsche, should you win the auction.
I am available to answer questions, but I do not know everything, and will be honest about known facts, observations, and impressions.
I am a working man, but will try to respond as quickly as possible. I often need to travel to meet with clients, and am too old to learn to write out answers on the iPhone, so please be patient. Thank you for reading this far and best of luck with the auction.
