One of 462 examples produced for the U.S. market during the model year, this 1996 Porsche 993 Carrera Targa has been made one-of-a-kind as a custom restoration by Jason Castriota, an American-born automotive designer best known for his role at Pininfarina where he designed Maserati’s GranTurismo and the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Among the most renowned designers of the modern era, Castriota was also responsible for the one-off Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and the SSC Tuatara, one of the fastest hypercars in the world with top speeds of over 300 MPH. Seeing the 993 as the ultimate expression of Porsche’s 911 sports car, Castriota set out on a personal endeavor to restore this Targa as a drivable work of art. The car was painstakingly refinished in a custom dark brown metallic color which is accented by a gold tone on the brake calipers as well as the extremely rare narrow-body 18” 911 Turbo hollow spoke wheels. The rear end also features a gold Targa badge and a unique split-grille decklid borrowed from the contemporary Carrera 2S model. Inside, you will find a custom handcrafted brown leather interior complemented by deviated stitching and woven leather houndstooth inlays on the seat centers, dashboard, and door panels. The performance has also been enhanced with a Fabspeed sport exhaust, ECU tune, and KW 3-way coilovers. This 993 was personally enjoyed by Castriota before joining the current owner's world-class Porsche collection and private museum about two years ago. This outstanding Targa is now being offered for auction out of New York.

Originating from California, this 993 was brought to J&B Bodyworks in New York for a custom restoration under the direction of Jason Castriota. The car was stripped to bare metal and refinished in a bespoke dark brown metallic color. It has been customized with clear European-style turn signal lenses, a gold rear Targa badge, gold-colored brake calipers, a Turbo front bumper, and a split-grille rear decklid borrowed from a 993 Carrera 2S. The decklid grille is painted in a light gold color along with the Turbo S style front fog light inserts and rare narrow-body 18” 911 Turbo hollow spoke wheels. Other features include xenon headlamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, a speed-activated rear spoiler, a rear window wiper, a basket handle spoiler with integrated brake light, and a power Targa top system with a sliding glass roof panel. The car has been kept in a private climate-controlled facility and is completely preserved under a layer of clear paint protection film.

Inside, this 993 features a custom handcrafted interior appointed with classic beige German square weave carpeting and a combination of chocolate brown and ivory leather upholstery. The headliner and sun visors are made from ivory leather while the seats, center console, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, and rear parcel shelf are covered in chocolate brown leather with deviated ivory stitching. The cabin is accented with custom woven houndstooth-pattern leather inserts on the dash fascia, seat centers, and door panels. The luggage compartment is also lined with matching square weave carpeting and chocolate brown leather binding. Other accessories include custom-bolstered heated full-power seats with adjustable lumbar support, custom brown seatbelts, black aluminum Rennline pedals, automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, a power sunshade, an integrated wireless phone charger, and a Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) head unit.

Power comes from an air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six Varioram engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The engine came factory-equipped with the optional Motor Sound Package airbox and has been upgraded with an ECU tune and a Fabspeed performance exhaust system with an X-pipe and sport cats. The suspension has also been upgraded with KW 3-way adjustable coilovers and a front strut tower brace. The car is professionally maintained by an in-house Porsche technician and there are no outstanding service items reported.

This sale will include a clean title. Be sure to check out the first episode of the online series This is My Car below, in which host David Jacobson explores and test drives the car with its creator Jason Castriota.

The seller would like you to know:  "We are beyond proud to present this stunning bespoke Targa. It would be hard to count the number of Porsche vehicles I have driven over the years. I have never been stopped and complimented more times in a 911 than I have in this car. Even people who are not Porsche enthusiasts will go out of their way to comment on just how amazing this car looks in person. Stunning is an understatement. If you can come to see it before bidding, please do so. It would be our pleasure to accommodate you. We will be standing by to answer any questions and are very excited to meet the new owner of this 993. Best wishes."

Good news for those of us that didn’t win is that with the same money and some patience a very similar car can be had and tailored to your own spec and tastes. Beautiful car though and congrats to buyer on the win.

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Notsmart correction, the vehicle arrived at the body shop in July of 2020 and left March of 21

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@WGris we were able to have a conversation with the body shop that performed the build and they are going to send over a repair order, we may not have it in time for end of auction but we will get it for the winning bidder. There is also a high probability that we will be able to supply the RO for the interior as well, however, we don't want to change the disclosures and complicate the sale. Integrity is very important to us and we can commit to making the strongest effort possible to get these items if it is of high importance to the buyer. Again the sale is not contingent on this. Good luck and looking forward to watching this one play out.

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Notsmart the last owner on carfax was Jason (we don't count as stated) soil the title he had issued in 12/21 to assign ownership is the one that you are speaking of then yes that would make him the 4th owner. The work was completed some time between 2018 and 2020, we are trying to get more accurate info

  • Notsmart (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@EUROsellinc thanks. So Jason was “Owner 4” under the Carfax?

Can you please respond to my below question re the date the mods were completed, such as the engine rebuild, paint etc ?

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Notsmart sure, we have a dealer's license and that ownership does not show up on carfax unless we have a title issued.

  • Notsmart (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@EUROsellinc Thanks. Then how does that line up with the ownership chain shown in the Carfax? Carfax says the current owner bought the car 12/31/2021 and prior to that it was owned by the same person for like 15 years … can you please clarify ?

    Thanks

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

    @Notsmart see below

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@911Geezer understood and respected, We are going to reach out and a see if there is anything we can obtain, should have an answer quickly. For reference, after meeting the builder and inspecting the vehicle we had no issue purchasing this vehicle and we have owned it for the past 2 years. @notsmart Jason did in fact own the car, that is who we purchased it from.

  • WGris (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

An amazing car like this with the video as the only provenance? I am totally shocked by the absence of any build documentation. Can the seller please explain?

  • 900200H 3 months, 3 weeksago

Bid in the amount of $129,000

  • Notsmart (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@911Geezer @seller thanks for the responses. Like @911Geezer, I was hoping/expecting to see quite a bit of documentation with this car.

Since there is no paperwork, can you please tell me what date the major mods were completed? For instance, the specific paint and engine rebuild dates. I assume all of this work happened prior to Owner 4 in the CarFax acquiring the car (12/31/2020) - but how much before? And just to make sure I am following the CarFax history properly, Castriota never owned this car, right - he simply directed the design, etc.?

    Thanks for the clarification.

  • 911Geezer (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Seller - Thanks for the response, I’ll think I’ll watch how this plays out. No offense you have a wonderful car but documentation is a sticking point for me.

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@911Geezer thank you for the kind words, there is no documentation with the vehicle, please see the last comment in response to a different bidder. Happy to set up a call or FaceTime with our mechanic or show the car prior to auction end if you are local.

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

    @Notsmart My pleasure
    1. There are some minor scuffs on the speaker plate, I believe it can be easily remedied.

    2. There is no paperwork available from the build, our in house air cooled specialist went over the car for us prior to our purchase. Anyone with a fair amount of automotive knowledge can see the extremely high level of quality given to the paint and upholstery work
    3. The engine was said to be completely rebuilt, looks visually to be fresh and has no visable leaks along with great compression.

    Hope this helps

  • 911Geezer (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@seller - Could you post the following

    - pics during restoration, any pics of the bare body before restoration would be wonderful
    - pics of the paperwork from restoration work
    - summary of all other paperwork that comes with car (i.e.: original purchase docs, service docs, etc). Would like to know how complete the documentation is.

Beautiful car and nice to see it on PCarmarket.

  • 911Geezer (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Notsmart - fees to bring into Canada should be around $300 - $500 in brokerages fees, GST and provincial sales tax. Then of course you have transport fees. I just brought a Porsche in and all in it was around $10k including shipping, but I was also shipping into a province without a provincial sales tax.

  • Notsmart (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Andrew2337 @seller thanks for the responses.
    a few more questions

    1) is there damage to the speaker housing on the driver side?

    2) does the car come with complete service records and all the paperwork from the restoration? If not, what paperwork does it come with?

    3) About 1-2k miles have been put on the engine since it was fully rebuilt, right?

    Thanks

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 3 weeksago

    @Notsmart hi

The power train is stock with minor upgrades as noted in the description, so the HP is very close to stock. Sales tax can be paid to your state when you register the car. If you reside in NY we must collect the taxes and register the vehicle.

  • EandC 3 months, 3 weeksago

Bid in the amount of $115,000

  • Andrew2337 (registered bidder) 3 months, 3 weeksago

@Notsmart you don't pay taxes in NY if you are buying out of state meaning the invoice is to a person who is out of the state and the vehicle is shipped there. You would pay the Canadian taxes HST at the border. They will check the online price to make sure it matches your bill of sale.

  • dukeyr (registered bidder) 3 months, 4 weeksago

all the amazing detail here and the trunk carpets still don't sit pretty but thats really nitpicking
    this is a true unicorn!

  • Notsmart (registered bidder) 3 months, 4 weeksago

    Hi,
How much hp/tq does the car put out with its mods?
Also, how do taxes work on this auction (are any paid to selling dealer) assuming the car gets plated in NY ? And assuming the car gets exported to Canada and plated there ?

    Thanks

@goldfingerjr The gold tone accents you are referring to were additional design queues that Jason added to the car shortly after its original completion. He felt these treatments were necessary to elevate the car's overall presence.

  • VCMGT7 (registered bidder) 3 months, 4 weeksago

What an incredible presentation on this absolutely gorgeous piece of rolling art. Great job to the designer/builder and kudos to this platform. That video was exactly what was needed to show us all what we needed to see and know. Someone is going to have something very special in their collection in a few days. I hope it stays in the US. Even better, I hope it comes to west coast.

  • goldfingerjr (registered bidder) 3 months, 4 weeksago

I noticed that the fog light / brake cooling vent inserts and the split rear grill are now gold as opposed to brown shown in the video....have they been repainted gold or do you guys have the brown ones available with the car as well?

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 4 weeksago

@Kingfrog43 it is no longer present since when the paint was done, they removed everything to make sure the job was done to the highest possible standard

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 4 weeksago

@Ghost hello, under Jason's ownership very little mileage was put on the car, it was mainly flat bedded around for some local events and taken on short local drives. Since our ownership, we put around 1k miles on it taking it to some events including the Audrain motor week up in Newport RI. Many people stopped us and commented on this car.

  • EUROsellinc (seller) 3 months, 4 weeksago

@goldfingerjr thank you for the kind words. The restoration was completed several years ago by Jason's team, we have owned the vehicle for just under 2 years.

  • goldfingerjr (registered bidder) 3 months, 4 weeksago

I'm still waiting for the answer to my previous question (I'm assuming the restoration was done around 2020?) but now I have an additional one...can you find out if the body underneath the seldom-seen side rocker panels has been painted the new body color? Basically want to know if they would be removable without having to add paint if one wanted to...
