We are pleased to present this 1996 Porsche 993 Carrera 4S finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior.  The original Carrera 4S was introduced for the 1996 model year featuring a naturally aspirated flat-six engine paired with an all-wheel-drive system and wide bodywork from the 911 Turbo.  A lifelong California car, this 1996 example was acquired by its third owner from Porsche of Santa Barbara in Spring of 2020 and has since been fitted with a new clutch, valve and timing chain cover gaskets, new brake pads and rotors, Sport Suspension (M030) springs, RS engine mounts, a custom steering wheel, and new Recaro bucket seats with houndstooth cloth centers. This outstanding 993 Carrera 4S is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California showing just over 39k miles on the odometer.

This 4S comes finished in traditional Guards Red and sports the wide fenders, bumpers, and rockers of the 993 Turbo. The seller notes the car has spent nearly its entire life garage-kept in Southern California and has rarely been driven in the rain.  The finish is described to be in excellent condition overall with a full paint correction completed in October of 2021, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.  The factory 18” Turbo wheels come fitted with optional colored center crests and a set of Pirelli P Zero tires.

The black leather interior has been fitted with new Recaro bucket seats featuring classic houndstooth inserts as well as a custom Vivid Racing steering wheel trimmed in perforated leather and carbon fiber with deviated red stitching. An upgraded Alpine stereo has also been installed, featuring Bluetooth and satellite radio compatibility. The factory exclusive aluminum-trimmed gauges, shifter, and handbrake lever remain in place, while the original steering wheel and painted hardback Sport Seats are said to accompany the sale.

This 993 is equipped with an air-cooled 3.6L flat-six Varioram engine that delivers up to 282 HP to all four wheels by way of a 6-speed manual transmission.  In July of 2020, an engine-out service was completed by Schneider Autohaus of Santa Barbara including new brake pads and rotors, valve and timing cover gaskets, an oil change, and a new clutch.  Upgraded RoW Sport Suspension (M030) springs were also installed at this time along with 993 RS engine mounts for a more visceral and responsive ride. Images of the undercarriage show a set of upgraded Dansk mufflers, and corresponding service invoices can be found in the gallery.

This sale will include a set of two keys with remote fobs, some service records, and a clean title. Do not miss your chance to become the next owner of this tastefully upgraded and beautifully presented 1996 Carrera 4S.

@meltingjax - as I told the seller privately in comments, I actually bought this car in March 2020 from Porsche Santa Barbara and the deal was cancelled after the dealer never delivered the car to me after a week of waiting and after writing them a check for it. Was very strange of SB Porsche to do that. Covid hit. The deal was cancelled. My wife and I have a photo in front of the car. I later found it on eBay and was the highest bidder. Didn't meet reserve and the dealer never attempted to strike a deal. I've been searching for it since. There was an extra "S" emblem in the owner's manual booklet inside the car at that time, would be interesting if it's still there. Hope to hear about her on Rennlist. She's a beauty and enjoy the car in the best of health. Cheers.

@rak1161 I stand corrected. It is a 3M vinyl wrap but the wrap itself has an adhesive underside that adheres to the spoiler. No glue was used. Still, very easy to remove.

@rak1161 Hi - what type of wrap was used on third-break-light piece. Hope that it won't damage the paint when removed? Do you know the brand of the black-wrap? did they have to place adhesive? Thanks -

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@MeltingJax Yes I can upload photos of original steering wheel and frunk to show spare and tools, but will not be able to until 10am PST/1pm EST. Hope that’s ok.

  • MeltingJax (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 Thank you for being so responsive. Could you post a picture of the original steering wheel. Also, do you have the tools and air compressor. Is the spare donut wheel also in the frunk? Perhaps a picture of the Frunk with the carpet removed? Thanks again

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan Yes, of course, no offense taken. Just thought helpful to provide context for why the wrap is there. Probably will look better when brought back to its original red and I would be happy to do so if the new owner wants.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan I actually think it looks pretty good. A friend talked me into it to distinguish the spoiler from the body and to complement the black metal wiper arm and the black slats on the rear decklid spoiler. But personal taste is personal and, as I mentioned, it can be removed very easily.

  • lamacan (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 was that just a personal taste thing? Or some reason for it?

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Narbeh The rear spoiler above the brake light has a black matte vinyl wrap on it. The spoiler itself is painted red underneath and the paint is perfect. The vinyl wrap can be removed very easily. I have uploaded a video to show the working function of the third brake light as requested. Hoping the pcarmarket team posts it this evening. No work done on the third brake light. It works fine.

  • Narbeh (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 - can you explain why the rear spoiler above the third brake light is not painted? It should be painted. Was it replaced? Any work done on the third brake light to your knowledge? I didn't notice any in the service records. Can you post a video or photos showing the third brake lights illuminated? Thank you.

@FlatSixer Yes, I can post the invoice tomorrow. as well as the back of the other seat (which looks just like the one posted). If I remember correctly, paint correction service was ~$3000. And aside from the one bit of road rash under the front of the car, there is not one mark or blemish on the car. It is flawless.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan I also just uploaded photos of the seat brackets. I presume they will be posted soon. And I may have mispoken earlier. The seat brackets shown in the photos are the ones that came with the new Recaro seats. They needed to be retrofitted since what came with the Recaros did not fit perfectly. That said, and as you can see from the original seat photos, the original brackets are still with the original seats -- so if anyone wants to have the original seats put back in (which I would be happy to facilitate) all it would take would be bolting those original brackets back in place.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Jcarta4591 Just uploaded another photo from under the front bumper. I presume the pcarmarket team will post it soon. Appears that the small plastic covering came undone in that one spot and there is some road rash on the underside of the bumper. This cannot be seen when looking at the car -- you would have to get way underneath the front of the car like I just did. That said, it is an imperfection from what appears to be an abrasion from a road swale. My body shop contact thinks it would be an $800-1000 fix but he recommends against it given it can't be seen and it would add a paint layer to the front bumper.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@FlatSixer I just uploaded photos of door hinges and videos of both doors closing. I trust the team at Pcarmarket will post those soon. Absolutely no strange sounds with hinges or any popping sounds when opening or closing the doors.

  • FlatSixer (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 @rak1161, can you please post a pic of the back of the other hardback seat. Only one was shown. Also please post the recent paint correction invoice showing the work performed. Any dings, paint chips or paint imperfections? If so please post close up pics. Thanks

  • FlatSixer (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Jcarta4591 Seller, per @Jcarta4591, please provide info on any popping when opening/closing doors as well as pics of door hinges. Better yet, a quick video (with sound) of the hinges opening/closing. Thanks much and good luck w/sale.

  • rmatluck (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

As a current 993 owner/fanatic, this one looks like one of the cleanest I've ever seen. Beautiful presentation and clearly a very well taken care of example...GLWTA.

  • Jcarta4591 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan Agree, that’s what it looks like. I was wondering if additional pictures of the area could be taken without having to put the car on a lift. Thank you.

  • Jcarta4591 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 I am wondering if when you open and close the doors, the door clicks, and if there is any play w/ the bracket that is in the pillar side. This seems to be a common problem for this cars. Any pictures of the door hinges would be appreciated. Thank you.

@Jcarta4591 i see the same thing. it's some cross member bent detached from its mounting point. You can see where whatever hit it scratched the underside of the bumper where it detached. It's probably not a big deal whatever it is, but it's something.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan Yes, certainly. Will do so tomorrow.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@Jcarta4591 @Jcarta4591Unfortunately I am not going to be able to get the car back on the lift before Tuesday. I spoke with the body shop lead who took the photos of the underside. He assures me there is absolutely no structural damage under the car. At most a small scrape or two from navigating driveway swales, but not many Porsche's can avoid those :-). I don't know what door straps are but I can post more specific photos with a bit more direction. Thanks.

  • lamacan (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 thanks. can you take pictures of the mounting of the rails/sliders? Ideally at the screw/bolt points? Thank you.

  • Jcarta4591 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Are you able to take additional pictures of front underside? Picture #40 seems to show some damage. Also, any problems with the door straps? Are you able to take pictures of both sides? Thank you in advance.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@lamacan I had a 50th Anniversary 911 five years ago that had the houndstooth check seat inserts, and really liked that aesthetic, so I wanted to replicate those seats in this 993. The Recaro's in this car seemed to be the only ones I could find that fit 1995-1998 911's. They are super comfortable and supportive. I bought them from Vivid Racing in Arizona. I'm not exactly sure if original brackets/sliders were used to install but I believe so. What I can say is that the person who installed these is quite skilled and he assures me that the original hardback seats can be put back in place quite easily.

Can you explain the changed seats situation more? What was the reasoning? Your original hard back seats look in great shape. Did you use original seat brackets/sliders or new ones? I assume drilled into the same holes?

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@MeltingJax Paint meter and options sticker will be posted later today. Thanks for your patience.

  • MeltingJax (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Thanks for the answer on the squeak. I am eager to see the paint meter and option sticker pictures when you post. them.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@MeltingJax I decided not to address the squeak I had heard coming from the windshield. It is a very minor service and the squeak was very intermittent, so I decided to live with it and not give in to my need for perfection :-). I think change of weather can trigger it from time to time but overall it really was not enough of an issue to seek out the specialist in LA that Schneider Autohaus had recommended.

  • MeltingJax (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@rak1161 The 2020 service record indicates a squeak coming from the windshield rubbing against the frame. Has that been addressed? If so, can you post the invoice?

    Thank you

The day will come when I get to answer a very popular question on this forum. “Why are you selling it?” Can’t wait!

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@dmccart812 No clear bra but I did just have an extensive paint correction done last month. I would be happy to send a photo of the label under the front hood that shows the options. Hoping Friday is ok as I currently am in Southern California and the car is in Northern California. I am headed back up late tomorrow.

  • dmccart812 (registered bidder) 2 years, 3 monthsago

Couple more questions: Does car have clear bra? If yes, what areas? Do you have a picture you could post either of the window sticker or the label under the front hood that shows the codes for the options? Thanks

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@dennisconnie2 I admit I am selling somewhat reluctantly but I find that I have been driving my 2015 991 far more. Time to shift the garage around a bit in the new year.

  • rak1161 (seller) 2 years, 3 monthsago

@dmccart812 Yes, I have paint meter readings but I will not be able to upload until Friday. Hope that's ok.
