The final evolution in an esteemed lineage of racing cars dating back to 1973, the Porsche 911 Cup 3.8 RSR (Type 993) was the last air-cooled, naturally aspirated 911 race car produced by Porsche’s Weissach motorsports department. It was based on the 993 Carrera Cup chassis and equipped with a specialized 3.8-liter racing engine to compete in 24-hour endurance events like Spa, Daytona, and Le Mans. According to the Porsche Historical Archives, this particular car, chassis no. 398070, is one of just 45 examples produced in total and was completed at the factory in February 1997 finished in Firnweiss (Snow White) and equipped with the European-spec M64/75 engine, an M50/34 close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox, Recaro racing bucket seats, a Matter roll cage, an integrated fire suppression system, and air jacks. It was delivered new to the Mizwa Porsche distributor in Tokyo and remained in Japan before it was acquired by Jerry Seinfeld who subsequently imported to the car to the U.S. under the EPA’s racing exclusion in 2015. The car was purchased out of the Seinfeld Collection by its current owner in 2016 and has remained part of a world-class Porsche collection and private museum ever since. Remarkably, this 911 Cup 3.8 RSR was never entered into competition and remains highly original with all its factory-specified equipment included. A true time capsule and the last of its breed, this museum-quality 911 race car is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.

The factory-built 911 Cup 3.8 RSR race car draws influence from the contemporary 993 GT2 model with its riveted GRP fender flares, as well as the 993 Carrera Cup with its Turnwald “Clubsport” front and rear spoilers. Tow hooks are incorporated at the front and rear, lightweight Lexan is used for the rear and side windows, an emergency cutoff switch is located on the windshield cowl, and the bonnet features a central cutout to access the fuel filler. This example came factory-finished in Snow White and equipped with lightweight magnesium center-lock BBS wheels. The car is currently riding on a set of identical standard alloy BBS wheels while the factory lightweight magnesium wheels have been preserved separately. The seller adds that the car has been professionally maintained in a private climate-controlled environment throughout their ownership.

The lightweight race-ready cockpit was factory specified with a Matter roll cage, Recaro racing bucket seats, Sabelt safety harnesses, a MOMO steering wheel, a fire suppression system, and air jacks. A string of shift indicator lights is mounted on the steering column. The odometer currently reads just under 6,300 kilometers, of which approximately 400 were added by the current owner for on-road mechanical exercise.

This European-spec model was factory-specified with the 3.8-liter M64/75 engine which was optimized for endurance racing. Producing up to 340 HP, this engine features a revised camshaft profile as well as a resonance intake system with six intake plenums and individual throttle valves. The rear wheels are driven through an M50/34 close-ratio 6-speed manual transaxle. The seller indicates a pair of standard rubber engine mounts have been installed for driving comfort, although the original solid engine mounts will also be included in the sale. Maintained by an in-house technician while under the current owner’s tenure, the car’s fluids have been replaced and its 75-liter fuel cell has been kept filled with premium 100-octane non-ethanol fuel to preserve its integrity.

This RSR is accompanied by its original magnesium BBS wheels, solid engine mounts, and a binder of provenance including import documentation, service records, and a letter of authenticity from the Porsche Historical Archives.

@burnrubr if you’re referring to one of the 92 Carrera Cup cars that Porsche sold that were streetable, this 3.8 RSR isn’t close, they’re the real deal, pure race car and a true joy to drive.
