Up for auction is this well-presented 1997 Porsche 993 Carrera Cabriolet finished in Polar Silver Metallic over a Midnight Blue partial leather interior with supple leather seats.  Featuring a 6-speed manual transmission, this 1997 example has recently been treated to a high-quality professional respray, an updated Porsche Classic radio, and a 30k mile comprehensive service.  It is now being offered for auction by its owner in Florida while showing just over 32k miles on the odometer, accompanied by service records, the original window sticker, and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Within the last year, this 993 is said to have been completely refinished in its original color of Polar Silver Metallic, following the removal of old stone guards that damaged some of the original paint.  The respray is said to have been carried out by a highly reputable specialist using premium Glasurit paint, and all new rubber seals and moldings were installed during this time as well.  A Ceramic Pro coating has since applied over the full exterior along with new stone guards for the rear fenders.  A new German-made blue cabriolet with sound insulation has been fitted and the windshield was replaced with a new OEM part following a minor road-going chip.  This 993 is factory optioned with stainless steel exhaust pipes and 17" Cup 2 wheels that come dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport tires bearing approximately 6k miles of use. Detailed images and paint meter readings are shown in the photo gallery.

The Blue leather interior is noted to be in excellent condition with only very minor wear depicted on the driver’s seat.  The air conditioning system has been completely overhauled and recharged under the current ownership.  A genuine Porsche Classic satellite radio has been installed and the original radio will also accompany the sale. Factory options listed on the original window sticker include supple leather front and rear seats, heated and power operated front seats, metal door sills with insignias, left seat lumbar support, and a 6-disc CD changer. All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional.

Representing the final generation of the air-cooled 911, this 993 Carrera is equipped with a 3.6 L flat-six Varioram engine rated at 282 HP.  A 6-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels, and this Cabriolet underwent a recent 30k mile comprehensive service by a local Porsche specialist which included the replacements of fluids, filters, spark plugs, and new front Bilstein shock absorbers.  All other routine maintenance is said to be up to date and this 993 is reported to be in top running order.

This sale will include service records, the original window sticker, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a cabriolet top boot, and a clean title.  This meticulously maintained, low-mileage 993 is sure to satisfy any discerning air-cooled enthusiast, do not let this opportunity pass you by.

@fjinva Sorry, I noticed I did not answer all your questions: I have had no oil seepage at all. The car is dry. The original radio does work in all respects, I chose to upgrade to the Porsche Classic Satellite Radio because I like the look the navigation and the ability to have Sirius XM. The original radio conveys with the car.

  • mcgrath554 (seller) 3 years, 2 monthsago

@fjinva The date codes on the tires are: Front 4315, 4416; Rear 2916 and 2916. All tires were purchased from TireRack in June 2017.

  • fjinva (registered bidder) 3 years, 2 monthsago

To move away from the paint discussion, which looks excellent, what are the date codes on the tires? Does the original radio function correctly? Have you had to address any oil seepage or leaks? Any dash lights on while driving? Looks to be a very well maintained 993. GLWA.

@Pnut964 I do not have photos of the paint damage when a detail shop that removed the old stone guards and I saw what appeared to be tool marks in the paint. I was very upset and since I knew the difficulty in trying to fix this issue with just respraying the painted area to match I made a decision to just perform a respray of the car. In doing so, I also would remove the the small chips in the paint from the road along with a new windshield.

The paint shop is very familiar with Porsche's and discussed the process with me. They did not want to remove the galvanized (put on by the factory using electrostatic means) layer that protects the metal from rust and only removed the clear coat down to the base coat and then painted over that. Based on my experience their workmanship and reputation is tops. I had gone to a Porsche certified shop and was NOT happy as to the workmanship and materials used to paint these cars. Basically, what they do is insurance work for accidents. What I saw was just a basic sanding and a respray along with a high bill. Most workers were very young and could not have the experience to paint these cars. Based on this, I went on a journey to go to various shops in a 50 mile area until I came across the shop that I chose. I wanted real craftsman and folks who do ONLY custom work, not insurance work.

@mcgrath554 Beautiful car. Do you have photos of the paint damage that resulted in the respray? What kind of surface prep was done prior to the respray? Did they go over existing paint or take down to bare metal? Thank you

    @mcgrath554 Hi JM,
Thanks for allowing me to inspect your car today. It's not everyday that you get the opportunity to look at the car during an auction. This car is in very good condition, no leaks, rust or damage noted. Car looks better in-person then in the photos. The current owner has spent a lot of money keeping the car in this condition. The new owner should be very happy with the car. The paint and top look original. Interior shows minimal wear. Good luck with the auction!

@mcgrath554 : Well said. I retract me comments and my reservations about the body shop that you hired to paint your car. It is very clear to me from the condition of your Porsche that you share our passion for air cooled 911's.

  • mcgrath554 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@BarryLe I paid over 10k for the work. The paint alone was $1800 which I purchased myself and gave it to them. Additionally, approximately another $1500 in gaskets, rubber seals, light lenses. They just don’t do Porsche’s, while I was there they had just finished a Ferrari which was beautiful. I along with others in the Space Coast Porsche Club believe the work is top rate. As a personal note. my family owned and operated a custom shop in the greater NYC area and from my experience their workmanship is first rate. Hard to believe the comments site unseen.

  • BarryLe (registered bidder) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@mcgrath554 : To be honest, I was put off by their website and the cars that they displayed in their "Gallery". There wasn't even one really high end Porsche, BMW, or Mercedes, never mind a Ferrari or a Lambo. They just displayed a bunch of American iron. Also, I don't think you can do a really high quality glass out respray on a 911 for what you paid. I would have expected the work to cost at least $4,000.00 more. Perhaps the rent and the labor rates in the Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Ft. Lauderdale are higher than in Melbourne Beach. In any event, I like the car and I have submitted the first bid.

  • mcgrath554 (seller) 3 years, 3 monthsago

@BarryLe Not sure what your issues with the shop I chose. I spent a week going to several shops in a. 50 mile radius that is not an insurance shop, I wanted craftsmanship quality and I will continue to support these guys. I have sent them other business from the Porsche club and all seem to be very happy. Please note, I even went to a Porsche recommended shop and what I saw was totally upsetting to me as to quality.

While I might have preferred a different body shop for the respray, I will start the bidding on what appears to be a very nice 993. BarryLe

I have had this beautiful 993 since April of 2017. I truly love the great sound as you are going down the road whether top up or down. I have always babied my cars and this one is no different as I am a fanatic when it comes to maintenance and detailing my cars. I was never set on just leaving things the way they are, but I wanted to always improve them, whether it be replacing the radio (original conveys with the car) with the original Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System with Sirius XM Radio application. I have had all the leather conditioned by professional detailers, brand new beautiful German cloth top, to the most recent 30K (expensive) service completed. This car is in excellent condition and looks brand new it even has the original Cosmoline on the engine and underbody. I couldn't even stand a small rock chip in the windshield and on the headlight covers that I had to replace these with genuine OEM parts. You will not find a better maintained 993 out there for the money. Wherever, I have gone with this car, people acknowledge what a beautiful and new looking Porsche this is. I know most will ask, why are you selling this great car? Well honestly because I now want a Turbo to my collection and I have another Porsche, just wanted something a little different. So, I am hear to answer your questions and I will try to be as honest as I can. Happy bidding.
