Available for auction is this 1997 Volkswagen Golf GL MKIII finished in Sequoia Green over a dark grey cloth interior. Produced from 1991 through 1998, the third-generation Golf was named European car of the year in 1992. This example was acquired by the seller from the owner of a reputable wheel retailer in Maryland after a previous owner performed refurbishments and upgrades including a turbocharged 1.8T engine from a later Volkswagen, Koni coilovers, AZEV wheels, Recaro seats, a custom sound system, custom bodywork, and much more. This modified 6-speed Golf is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York.

This Golf comes finished in Sequoia Green with grey “Golf III” decals. A glass-out respray was reportedly carried out five years ago in its original color, and at the same time, the sunroof was eliminated along with the rear wiper hole and the windshield washer nozzles. The seller notes that the finish remains in excellent condition aside from fading on the rear door handles, paint stress on rear passenger side door molding, and some damage to the rocker pinch weld area caused by jacking. A collection of detailed images can be found in the gallery. Additional equipment includes a third brake light delete, European specification headlights, OEM smoked taillights, an AP Design mono windshield wiper, and Optiwerks ABT-style side skirts. It rides on a set of 16” staggered-width AZEV Type-A wheels dressed in Nitto tires from 2019. The CARFAX indicates that the vehicle hit a curb in 2012 and as a result the airbags deployed and damage to the undercarriage was sustained.

Inside, the cabin features a pair of Recaro-style seats upholstered in dark grey cloth along with a matching MKIII Jetta sport split rear seat. Black carpets line the floors and are protected by custom “Golf” floor mats with green binding. Additional details include a Husco armrest, Black Forest industries shift knob and boot, a VDO boost gauge, Audi TT aluminum pedals, a suede headliner, a MK 3.5 “dimple” dashboard and tri-spoke steering wheel, custom green seatbelts, and more. A factory radio delete panel has been installed, though a custom sound system is present and features Polk 6.5” speakers, a Memphis Audio Bluetooth controller with USB inputs, and a 4-channel amplifier hidden behind the passenger airbag panel. The airbags have been deleted and the seller confirms that all other electronics and accessories remain functional. The seller states the odometer has been reset to reflect mileage since the engine swap and that the chassis bears approximately 106k miles in total. The seller also notes the dashboard rattles at idle due to the new gravity-cast urethane motor mounts.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.8T inline-four cylinder engine sourced from a later model Volkswagen. According to the seller, the engine was refreshed within the last 5k miles with new gaskets and timing belt, and has been upgraded with a Unitronic stage 1.5 tune, a Forge diverter valve, Eurojet front mount intercooler, an Aluminum radiator, and a custom 2.5” stainless steel turbo-back exhaust system. THe valve covers, intake manifold, custom catch can, and strut tower caps are power coated bronze. The front wheels are driven by way of a 02M 6-speed manual transmission. A new clutch was installed with the transmission, and the axles were upgraded with Driveshaft Stage 5 axles/hubs rated at up to 1,000 HP. A Stancedubs engine harness was used for the engine swap and the factory odometer is said to reflect the mileage of the new engine. The engine bay has been shaved and the wiring partially hidden, and the engine bay has been further customized with Dreadnought Customs hood lining, a Bronze powder coated valve cover and intake manifold, strut mount covers, and an oil catch can. The suspension consists of adjustable Koni coilovers, VR6 sway bars, and a Neuspeed rear upper strut bar. The braking has been upgraded with VR6 front calipers with stainless steel lines and a rear brake disc conversion. The Optima red-top battery is about 6 months old and is relocated to the trunk.

This sale will include a car cover, factory rubber all-season mats, OEM bumper lights, a hatch wing, and a clean title.

@Vlad600sel The work was done 2 owners ago and paperwork did not follow as it was done by a well known reputable shop. The car is a bit iconic in this area and reputation proceeds itself.

@cbogart Motor was built and swapped approximately 4.5 years ago and 5800 miles put on since.

  • cbogart (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

How recent was the build completed?

  • mikefny (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@ArtVandelay Yes there is a low reserve right now. You couldn't build this car for any near for what the reserve is. The new owner will be very happy with this investment.

  • ArtVandelay (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

I like your mods. I wouldn't be surprised if you have $25k in this. I assume there is a reserve?

@JayYu The car has a high flow cat, so I would be on the doubtful side. In New York State any car older than 25 years is just a safety visual check.

  • JayYu 1 year, 2 monthsago

    Would this pass California SMOG?

  • DeuceDeuceBravo (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@mikefny That's great, thanks. When I was working at a dealer we were told by DMV that third brake lights couldn't be removed, modified, or obscured. But again that's probably state specific and it was a while ago. Looks like a fun little car. GLWTA.

  • mikefny (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@DeuceDeuceBravo DMV NYS form MV-529 states only "2 stop lamps" are required. So no, car is not "begging" for a ticket. Car comes with state inspection sticker good for another 9 months.

  • DeuceDeuceBravo (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

For states that require inspection, I wonder if the missing high-mount brake light would be disqualifying? At the very least it's probably begging for a ticket.

  • mikefny (seller) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@Habari2 I do not know the details of the carfax reported accident as it was before my ownership.
I do not know if it was a single or multi stage process but will provide pictures of paint meter on several panels in the next day.
The car was never dyno'ed in my ownership but Unitronics claims 225hp/260lb-ft

  • Habari2 (registered bidder) 1 year, 2 monthsago

@mikefny , can you provide any additional details on the accident reported on carfax?
When the car was repainted, was it a single, or multi-stage process?
How much horsepower and torque with the current tune?
    Thank you
