 The Volvo 960 debuted for the 1991 model year as a successor to the 760. It was among the very first cars to have seen the works of British designer, Peter Horbury, and introduced an advanced aluminum 24-valve DOHC inline six-cylinder engine for most markets, often dubbed the “white block,” which arrived in the U.S. in 1992. This facelifted 1997 example comes finished in Emerald Green Metallic over Light Grey leather upholstery and features an optional in-dash CD changer. Cared for by the same family for approximately 24 years before the seller’s acquisition, this executive Swedish sedan is now being offered for auction out of Florida with just under 158k miles on the odometer.

The 960 received a facelift for the 1995 model year, including a revised grille and body-colored panels. Additionally, the 960 was the first car offered with standard daytime running lights in North America. This example comes finished in Emerald Green Metallic (421) and features halogen headlights, a power sunroof, and power-adjustable mirrors with heating elements and automatic timers. It rides on 16” alloy wheels dressed in Kumho Sense tires. Minor cosmetic flaws are noted, including small scratches and peeling spots. Additionally, the front lower plastic lip is missing due to damage caused by a wheel stop under previous ownership. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report noting minor damage in January 2024.

The cabin presents Light Grey leather upholstery with matching carpets complemented by polished wood veneers. Equipment includes 8-way power-adjustable front bucket seats with memory functions, a center armrest with cup holders, power windows, cruise control, electronic climate control, and a rear window defroster. An in-dash CD player was additionally opted for. Some small tears are noted in the driver’s seat. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly, and no warning lights have been reported.

Power is derived from a 2.9-liter DOHC 24-valve all-aluminum inline-six engine with Motronic 4.4 engine management. As much as 181 HP and 199 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission with selectable economy, sport, & winter/Wet drive modes. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted 4-wheel ventilated front and solid rear discs. The previous owner is said to have installed new brakes, serviced the braking system, and fitted a new timing belt at 157k miles. Additionally, the seller states service items under their ownership have included an oil & filter change, coolant flush & refill, tire rotation, and a thorough inspection confirming working mechanical condition.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, and sales literature.

The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting our auction! Our admiration for this Volvo 960 began the moment we laid eyes on it. Upon observing its exceptional condition and remarkable preservation, we knew that PCARMARKET was the perfect platform to find a deserving new owner to care for it. This car has been in the same family for approximately 24 years, and its condition speaks volumes. While not flawless, with minor bumper scratches, water spots, and a tear on the driver's seat, these imperfections add character to this beautiful Volvo 960. Mechanically, it is in excellent condition, and we are confident you will love every aspect of it. Bid with confidence! Feel free to review our seller profile to see our past listings.”

    Wow - this thing cleaned up beautifully. I had it on my IAA watchlist and received an absurdly low buy it now alert via email in January. Was going to purchase and it had sold already. The only cosmetic issue I could see was a miscolored fuel door, and it really did look like a clean car even in its auction state. Best of luck with the sale.

    @pcar77 Very interesting, I didn’t know about that but thank you for the information.

    @Angelp I agree with you.

    These cars are great because they hardly ever break down or need repairs. An interesting fact about these cars is that the modular engine was actually designed by Porsche. But, it's not complicated with the fancy extras, belts, etc. Just make sure to change the timing belt every 70,000 miles, and this car will keep going strong. It's not a Porsche, but it's got that Porsche engineering in its genes. It's amazing, just with regular maintenance, these cars can easily hit over 500,000 miles and still run like nothing. GLWA!

    This marks the final era of genuinely dependable Volvo cars. I appreciate the iconic boxy design, and this particular example is undeniably well maintained. There's substantial market potential for the 900 series Volvo, as people are beginning to recognize them as exceptionally well constructed vehicles.

    Kudos to the seller for the excellent car and presentation. Cheers!
