Now available for auction at no-reserve is this 1998 BMW 740IL presented in Oxford Green Metallic over a Tan leather interior.  Having represented one of BMW’s most premium sedans, this luxurious 740IL features a 4.4 L V8 engine mated to a ZF 5-speed automatic transmission.  This 1998 example was purchased by its current owner in 2018 shortly before undergoing over $40k worth of refurbishments including new head gaskets and new brakes as well as a rebuilt suspension and steering system.  This classic 7-series is now being offered by its seller in Pennsylvania with approximately 58k miles showing on the odometer.

With a paint correction recently performed, the Oxford Green Metallic finish on this 7-series is noted to be in good overall condition with some minor imperfections.  Some damage was reported to the rear bumper and the seller indicates that it was completely repaired along with the refinishing of the front bumper at the same time, resulting in damage shown on Carfax (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  New LED taillights have also been installed which are noted to cause an intermittent bulb-out warning on the dashboard.  This 740IL rides on newly refinished e46 M3 wheels which have been dressed in new Dunlop tires within the last 3k miles.

The luxurious Tan leather interior has undergone significant refurbishment under the current ownership including the replacements of broken accessories, LCD screen restoration, re-dying of leather and the refinishing of wood veneer.  Upgraded wood B-pillars from a BMW 750 have also been installed along with a custom handmade leather steering wheel and “Blue Bus” Bluetooth phone interface.  The center console door is said to have some difficulty closing and the rear passenger roll-up shades are broken, however, all other gauges and accessories remain fully functional.  The seller also indicates that the computer protocol will be updated to IBUS prior to delivery.

This 740IL is equipped with a 4.4 L V8 engine which is rated at 282 HP from the factory.  The rear wheels are driven through a ZF 5-speed automatic transmission making for a refined and comfortable ride.  Within the past year extensive maintenance has been carried out including the changing of the transmission and brake fluids, a four-wheel alignment, new battery, new filters, a new alternator, new head gaskets, new brake pads and rotors, a rebuilt steering system and rebuilt suspension with Bilstein shocks, H&R lowering springs and a K-Mac caster/camber kit.  All warranty work has been completed through BMW and all routine maintenance is said to be up to date.

The sale of this 740IL will include 2 brand-new BMW keys, a clean title, service records, a spare tire and toolkit.  If you’re in the market for a unique daily driver or a classic luxury sedan, this nicely presented 740IL is not to be overlooked.

@emh1990 When I got the ar the digital displays were delaminating, which is something that happens on older BMWs. I sent them out to a person who specializes in that kind of repair work; they now look brand new.

  • emh1990 (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Squint4 how do the digital displays look on this? It seeks like these always break on that era of BMW

@Grandall005 The headliner is not sagging at all, it held up well. I did notice that there are two symmetrical spots, on the very seam of the headliner by the back windows where the original glue BMW used yellowed a little bit. All the seats work perfectly, I just put in a new drivers seat controls because the plastic knob on the original one was cracked.

I want to be as open and transparent with this car as possible so please don't hesitate to reach out here or in direct messages and ask me whatever. This car isn't a brand new car, so there are little things here are there that are less than factory new, but the overall condition of the car is very, very good. It's a great design statement, clean and elegant; and it makes an impression on people.

I know I am biased but this is a lot of car especially for the kind of bids already seen. This 740 shares the engine design and chassis with the e39 M5; a car that has gone up in value so significantly thats its driven up all prices for all V8 e39 models. The benefit of the shared chassis and components with the e39 is that virtually all performance modications for that model will work with this 740 and all e38 models like it.

For example, the caster camber kit; along with the springs and shocks were designed and sold for the e39 M5 but fit the car for sale perfectly.

As someone who has a stupid fondness for old bmws, I feel for you that your daily is the Alfa and this is your back up.
How is the headliner holding up, my last similar vintage 740 had issues with sagging.
Also, do the electric seats still work?

  • Squint4 (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@MrGregBMW Thank you, I am so happy this car turned out as nice as it did.

I just went out to my car to check and it seems it does not have any of the child seat anchor points. It is a shame because the back seats in this car are huge. Even with the front seats all the way back, a 6,3 guy has inches of room between his knee and the back of the seats.

The air conditioner actually works about as well as the one in my 2020 Giulia, which I guess could be a compliment or insult. The AC was one of the few systems of the car that didn't need attention. Despite it not needing attention to be made functional, the AC compressor had a terrible squeak in the main bearing. When the car was running it made a loud and pronounced constant tone when the car was on. Long story short, I ended up have to replace otherwise functional parts because of a squeak.

Nice car. A few questions-does the rear have the tethering hooks for child seats, ( 2 or 3 ) and is the air conditioning system still functional.

Nice car, wonder when they will change the name to car market...

  • Squint4 (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Grandall005 I would love to keep it, however, I leased another car about a year ago since the BMW was always in a state of being less than ready to drive. Also, my partner is not a fan of how much I spent on this car. This car was sort of a hobby and activity for me but now that everything within (and beyond reason) on the car is fixed, there isnt as much for me to do with the car. I honestly, dont have much of a chance to drive it. I would really like the car to go to someone who will appreciate it for what it is and take care of it.

@emh1990 I honestly don’t know how it drives compared to a stock car. When I first got the 740, all the bushings, along with the shocks and the springs, were worn out. I don’t think the previous owners even knew that maintenance needs to be done on all cars. So I went and replaced everything from the wheel hub up to the steering wheel, save the steering column and airbag. I used either oem parts except for the shocks and springs. The car drives really well I think. It certainly drives far better than a car of its size and age has any right to.

  • emh1990 (registered bidder) 3 years, 6 monthsago

It strikes me that the suspension, steering, and brakes have all been updated in a way that ought to make the car feel a little more modern and a bit tighter. How have the driving dynamics changed? How does it feel relative to a stock 740?

  • Squint4 (seller) 3 years, 6 monthsago

@Porsche993 I got the car with about 53k miles and put about 6k on myself. The mileage numbers are accurate. When it comes to the mileage put on by the second owner; I know what the car fax shows. The second owner got the car with mileage in the 40k range he put about 10k miles on the car.

    Mileage from 2015 to 2018 ?

Hi everyone and thanks for taking a look. My name is Jamie and I am the owner of this 740. I would be happy to answer any and all questions about the car. Honestly, I am just excited to have the opportunity to talk to about the car and all the work that has gone into it.
