Introduced in 1997 as a high-performance version of the Z3 roadster, the M Roadster features more aggressive bodywork, widened rear fenders, larger brakes, a retuned suspension, and the S50 engine borrowed from the E36 M3. This North American example is one of 2,763 produced for the inaugural model year and one of 1,165 of those to have been specified in Cosmos Black Metallic over black Nappa leather. Acquired by the seller in July 2023, this lifelong Texas car is now being offered for auction with approximately 87k miles showing on the odometer.

Compared to the standard BMW Z3, the M Roadster boasts a wider rear track, aerodynamic wing mirrors, redesigned bumpers, revised side vents, and quad-exit exhausts. This example is finished in Cosmos Black Metallic and features a black manually-operated convertible top, installed in April 2023. Notable modifications include later-model Z3 taillights, along with clear front reflector and side marker lenses. It rides on 17-inch Style 40 wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires, with curb marks noted and cracks visible on the sidewall of the front left tire. The CARFAX report indicates minor damage to the rear and left-rear areas in January 2017, and the seller has pointed out paint imperfections on the body. The original taillights will be included in the sale.

The Black leather interior features power-adjustable and heated sport seats, power windows and mirrors, a central locking system, air conditioning, cruise control, chrome-trimmed gauges, a three-spoke M sport leather steering wheel, an M-branded gear knob, and a Harman-Kardon 10-speaker sound system. A cellphone mount is positioned on the dash, and the vehicle has been upgraded with a Kenwood stereo, Hertz speakers, and Bluetooth connectivity. An airbag warning is illuminated, and surface wear is depicted in the gallery.

The Z3 M Roadster features a naturally aspirated S52B32 inline-six-cylinder engine with VANOS variable valve timing, producing up to 240 HP and 236 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a ZF 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Compared to the standard Z3, the M Roadster has a firmer suspension, thicker anti-roll bars, more robust semi-trailing arms, a strengthened subframe, and brakes borrowed from the E36 M3. Bilstein shocks have been added, and stopping power is provided by 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes. The seller adds that the trunk welds and differential mounts have been addressed, and corrosion is visible on the underbody.

This sale will include a clean title.

@agu22 looks like they were already replaced. I have uploaded the receipt copy to the additional photos for you

  • aurianfaridi (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@agu22 thank you! I like it way more than the jet black ones too. I will look at the service records again tomorrow, and if I see a receipt from the previous owner showing they were replaced I will upload the image here. I don’t recall of the previous owner had it done, so I will follow up tomorrow on this! Thank you for your inquiry.

Hi Seller lovely car on the car, looking forward to seeing the auction progress. Did you get the rear bushings done? They were indicated as needing replacement in one of the service doc photos. Also, when were the brakes last done?

  • aurianfaridi (seller) 1 month, 2 weeksago

@rossvesq I feel the same when I drive it! I just don’t drive it enough anymore to justify keeping it. This is my 4th Z, and I have loved them all.

I have included pictures of the trunk welds as I know bidders normally have questions about that.

Also, the airbag light is on due to a faulty sensor, which is a common issue on these cars. I just wanted to mention in my reply.

No roof leaks, no oil leaks, cold a/c

Nice. My wife and I are the original owners of an almost identical M Roadster. These things are an absolute HOOT to drive. You can easily break the rear end loose with minimal applications of the throttle. Probably the easiest car in the world to throttle steer. The ride is surprisingly compliant for an M model BTW. We love ours, and can vouch that whomever buys this will have a silly grin on his/her face for many miles to come. GLWA!
