Up for auction is this 1999 Porsche 986 Boxster 5-speed finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over a black interior. Prior to the seller’s purchase in 2017, this 986 underwent an extensive engine build by Flat 6 Innovations including an upgraded LN Engineering IMS bearing and Nickies cylinders.  It was also optimized for performance with upgraded brakes, a custom coilover suspension, a Brey Krause roll bar, and more.  Accompanied by a collection of spare parts and uninstalled modifications, this 986 is now being offered for auction by its second owner out of North Carolina while showing 94k miles on the odometer, of which approximately 20k were driven on the new engine.

This Boxster is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic and features a replacement Maroon convertible soft top with a glass rear window and defroster. The badging has been removed from the rear and the seller notes some small chips on the front end, additional photos are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This 986 currently rides on a set of 17” Carrera-Look twist-spoke wheels with 12mm spacers and an extended-length stud conversion. These wheels are dressed in Hankook RS4 tires showing date codes from 2020.

Inside, you will find a black interior customized with a Rennline aluminum shift knob, Alcantara shift boot, a Brey Krause roll bar, and an aftermarket Alpine radio.  Factory equipment includes cruise control, a sound system, center console storage cubbies, and an alarm system.  The air conditioning is said to be fully functional and the seller notes that the driver's window does not lower upon opening the door.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated M96 2.5L flat-six engine and is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. Prior to the current ownership, the original engine is said to have suffered an IMS bearing failure and was subsequently replaced with a 2.5L M96 engine sourced from SSF Auto Parts. This new engine received an IMS bearing upgrade and Nickies cylinders with factory rings and pistons from LN Engineering, before being installed by Flat 6 Innovations within the last 20k miles.  Routine fluid and filter changes are said to have been carried out by the current owner using DT40 engine oil.

The suspension was thoroughly refreshed with new arms front and rear, Tarett adjustable rear toe arms, EPS poly rear trailing arms, camber plates front and rear, a Tarett GT3 front sway bar, Feal 441+ custom valved coilovers with 400/500 spring rates and remote rear adjusters. The brakes were redone with stainless steel lines, StopTech Street Performance pads, and high-temperature brake fluid.  Additional modifications include an underdrive pulley, aftermarket headers, and a “Crios” modified muffler.  New OEM transmission mounts have been installed and a new engine mount is said to accompany the sale along with a Pedros suspension Technobrace, coolant system refresh parts, and a Rennline gas pedal pivot.

This sale will include a collection of additional parts and a clean title. With its newer engine, tasteful upgrades, and desirable 5-speed manual gearbox, this 986 is just waiting to be enjoyed by a new owner.

@guardsredd I have a saved screen shot of the PCA website where this car was mentioned. They did two articles on this car.

Other maintenance was performed by me, except the top (I have a receipt) and purchase of suspension. Everything else is so easy to work on with this car, so I did it myself.

Seller you report engine rebuild and several modifications/changes to car. Do you have all the records on the maintenance of the car? I didn't see any images of records or mention of it.

@Caymanorcarrera Thank you for the kind words. It truly is a joyful car. I tried my best to do a tons of research on this chassis and my build, I believe addressed some of the "misses" with the original. This car has a glass window top with defroster (original is plastic), suspension is has now enough variability that a beginner or an expert can drive this car, engine is as bullet proof as a M96 could be, etc. etc. I have built a S2000, Miata, Integra Type R and a 996.... when it comes to balance, this is the winner. Kids getting older, need to find a new platform (i.e. back seats) to enjoy with the family.

Looks like a wonderful old 986. Love the red top. All set up for spirited driving.....nice opportunity here.......and just in time for the 25 year anniversary of the Boxster launch in the US. Haven't yet sen the LE 25 yr 718, but I u/s it's got the 4.0 (-:

@davidnyc Glad that I asked! Rare to see a 986 with all these desirable track / set up mods that has not seen a lot of track time. Thanks for the reply and good luck with the auction

  • davidnyc (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Racer944 Actually, NO TRACK TIME WHATSOEVER !!!! I was signed up to do PCA Potomac at VIR for my very first track event in this car this August, but decided to sell the car before taking to the track. I actually have brand new in the box Raybestos ST43 ($$$$) pads for this car. I have definitely set it up to be the perfect "streetable" Spec Boxster, but no track time. Side note: the shocks are valved so that the spring rates do not beat you up on the street.

  • Racer944 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Given the list of mods on this car, can we assume that it has seen a bit of track time?

Quick update, the wheels are a "square" setup (all four wheels OEM rear wheels) for the perfect Boxster balance.
