Up for auction is this 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera Cabriolet finished in Arena Red Metallic over a Space Grey interior.  Equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, this 1999 example also showcases desirable factory options including leather front and rear seats, a leather dashboard and door panels, and 18” Technology hollow-spoke wheels.  A lifelong West Coast car, this Carrera was purchased by the seller’s father in 2009 around the time a brand-new engine was installed by Porsche warranty at 46k-miles.  Now showing approximately 79k-miles on the odometer, of which 33k miles were driven on the replaced engine, this 996 is being offered for auction by its seller in California accompanied by a collection of records and a factory-painted hardtop.

This 996 is finished in Arena Red Metallic with a black cabriolet soft top and color-matched removable hardtop.  Clear paint protection film has been applied over the front bumper, mirror covers, hood, and front fenders.  Some minor road-going imperfections are noted throughout the body and the clear film exhibits signs of age.  CARFAX shows minor rear-end damage to have occurred in 2020 which resulted in the rear bumper and decklid being replaced and painted.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  This example rides on factory optioned Turbo-style 18” Technology hollow-spoke wheels with colored Porsche center crests. Brand new Michelin Pilot Sport tires are said to have been installed in 2019.

Inside, you will find a Space Grey interior with optional leather front and rear seats as well as a leather dashboard and door panels.  Other factory options include a CD storage compartment, 8-way power-operated seats, driver’s seat memory, and an activated charcoal filter.  An aftermarket Alpine radio and amplifier have been installed and some wear is depicted on the front seat bolsters.  All gauges and accessories are said to be working properly.

A new 2001-spec 3.4L flat-six engine was installed by Porsche under warranty in 2009 at 46,166 miles. This naturally aspirated power plant is capable of generating 296 HP and 258 lb.-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission.  The motor mounts are said to have been replaced within the last 2k miles, the radiator was recently cleaned, and the seller reports that all other routine service was addressed to keep the car in proper running order.  Records will be included dating back to 2009 as well as the invoice for the engine swap showing a cost of nearly $17k.

This sale will include a set of two master keys, one valet key, owner’s manuals, tools, service records, and unused wind deflector as well as the factory-painted hardtop, cover and stand, and a clean title. Do not miss your chance to own this nicely optioned 6-speed Carrera.

Thanks for the bids and questions. This car is great and anyone who wins this ride will not be disappointed. If I had one extra garage space in my new home I would keep it.

@Abuong01 Pic 15 makes it look like it doesn't match, but Pic 16 shows the clear bra and the paint matching.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@Abuong01 There is a clear bra that is mentioned in the listing, the paint is matched but the clear bra is showing it's age. Minor cracking on the clear bra surface, not quite yellowed yet. I talked to a shop that does clear bra's and they said to have a pro remove/replace it. So I left it alone.

Hard to clearly see in pictures if the front bumper is mismatched from the frunk lid. Can you confirm there is or is not a difference. Thank you

I plugged in my Blue Driver ODB2 reader and pulled a few reports. They should be uploaded soon. I will try to get in for the DME this weekend or Monday.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@ralavis I can see if I can get to a dealer to get one before auction close.

  • ralavis (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Any chance we could see a DME report?

  • luis.seneriz (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Thank you these are the cars I want to buy, no garage queens. I’ll be bidding on it.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@luis.seneriz I would drive this car to NYC and back.

  • luis.seneriz (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

I’m in Texas would you have any doubts driving the car from there to here. I bought mine in Wisconsin and drove it home no issues almost 1300 miles.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@luis.seneriz And Yes, the AC blows cold. The top goes up and down, the window regulators were replaced a few years ago as well as the frunk latch.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@luis.seneriz The car is all stock except for the Alpine stereo. I do have the original Porsche head unit that I will include. The Alpine face is visible when the top is down and has the Sirius/XM option as well.

Hi I own a 3/98 coupe. Anyway any item other than the IMS that needs to be fixed? I like the fact that you have the hardtop. Does the air blows cold? Also, do you have the Becker radio. I like mine so much that I was thinking to get a convertible to cruise with my wife. My car is set up like a race car , but is 100 percent street legal. Does the car has any mods?? Thanks

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@SeaDooRider68 I contacted the dealer and I sent a copy of my invoice. They were able to find my fathers info in the computer. They said they did not specifically see the IMS Bearing retrofit part on the invoice. Since it was 10 years ago they don't know if the M96 engine had the retrofit done at factory. SO I am back to where we started. He said it is about $3k to get it done at Porsche Rocklin dealership. I imagine less at a independent shop.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@RogerB I would think so. I will contact the dealer. I do NOT know if they keep records for 10 years but if I can get something from them in writing I will upload.

  • RogerB 3 yearsago

Re: IMSB... As I understand it, since the engine was replaced in 2009, it should be an M96 engine with the latest/most robust OEM bearing (i.e., post-2005).

I wanted to comment on the damage on the CarFax. My mother of 72 years backed into my car while I was parked in her driveway. She was in tears. I have all the pictures but posted the most relevant 3. The paint was matched flawlessly and it looks perfect. The bumper and trunk lid were repaired and resprayed.

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

@nobrakes Thanks for the comment. I have talked to numerous Porsche mechanics and they all told me if you drive it like an old lady the chances of the IMS failing increase. This car was never driven that way. It was driven like a Porsche should but never abused. If I had more garage space I would keep it.

IMS talk reminds me of woke culture, if you say it enough it must be true. Just take a look at Panamera magazine every month with all those full color ads promoting this solution or that one. No wonder PCA is so compliant in support of the plague that will surely befall every M96 motor sooner or later. I respect the vendors who have perfected these replacements which have not surprisingly morphed into fixes that need to be replaced after 50k miles... that’s capitalistic innovation at its best! I applaud them, they have to put their kids through college somehow. My ‘02 at 76k still proudly sports it’s original IMS and always will. I know most every independent in DFW including one that that has done 1000’s of IMS retrofits. Over a bourbon he will admit that he can’t count on one hand how many were in imminent need of replacement much less of any concern at all. So go ahead if you plan to sell your car and spend the money when you replace a clutch, the unfortunate truth is that when it comes to resell you will get a return on that investment. I believe all this IMS lore arose out of Porsche selling tiptronic Boxsters to secretaries driving around with gears shifting at 2500 rpm all day. Drive these cars like their meant to be driven and the grim reaper will pass harmlessly by your garage door. GLWTS

@Needle4 There was nothing documented on the IMS bearing being replaced when the engine was replaced. The car was driven regularly and had the oil changed as least once a year. No leaks and no metal in oil. Most recommendations are to do it when you replace the clutch. While I do think it is preventative maintenance I never felt I needed to rush out and do it. https://autokennel.com/the-truth-about-the-ims-bearing-by-paul-kramer/

  • Needle4 (registered bidder) 3 yearsago

Hello, when the engine was changed out was the IMS bearing also taken care of? Thanks,

  • SeaDooRider68 (seller) 3 yearsago

HI, I am the seller and I am happy to answer any questions about the car. This car has been lovingly cared for but driven like a Porsche is supposed to be driven. Many a drive on the twisty back roads as seen in some of the images. My father and I have loved this car and I hope to find it a good home where it will be driven and enjoyed.
