Available for auction is this 1999 Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe show car.  In preparation for the 2017 SEMA auto show, this 1999 example was treated to a custom one-off widebody kit and a re-worked LS1 V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.  It also features a custom Tan finish, a redone interior with NRG bucket seats, an adjustable coil over suspension, and 19” Savini wheels.  This 996 was featured at the SEMA Battle of the Builders in 2017 where it placed in the top 10 of the Young Guns Division.  Having only covered a few hundred miles since the completion of the build, this one-of-a-kind show car is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Washington accompanied by a vast collection of spare parts and accessories.

Outside, this Carrera features extensive modifications including a custom hand-built widebody kit with bolt-on fender flares and side skirts as well as modified front and rear bumpers. With the exception of the original Black roof, the body has been refinished in a custom shade of Tan inspired by the Sand color offered on the Toyota FJ.  Other details include removable “Carrera LS” side graphics and an ERP International full carbon 996 Turbo decklid with a fully adjustable Cup-style carbon rear wing.  CARFAX shows minor rear-end damage to have occurred in 2015. The seller notes that the tires have made contact with the fenders and that rub marks are present, additional images are provided in the photo gallery. The car rides 19” Savini multi-piece wheels measuring 8” wide in the front and 13” wide in the rear.  These wheels feature polished barrels and come dressed in Toyo Proxes tires sized 245 front and 315 rear.

Inside, the original Savanna Beige interior has been redone with black dyed carpeting, a rear seat delete, a Brey Krause harness bar, 5-point harnesses, and NRG bucket seats with corresponding mounts and bracketry.  A Function First center console riser and GT3 style upper center console delete have also been installed along with a B&M short shifter and TWM shift knob. A Porsche Motorsports GT3 Cup steering wheel with MOMO hub adapter sits ahead of the original gauge cluster. The factory seatbelt restraints have also been retained.

The original 3.4L flat-six has been swapped out in favor of a 5.7L GM LS1 V8 engine rated at 350 HP stock. This LS1 has been rebuilt and further upgraded with the following items:

  • ARP Hardware
  • Texas Speedcam MS4 (239/242 .649"/.600" 111.5)
  • TSP Dual Spring Kit w/ PAC Polished .660" Springs, Retainers, New Seats, & New Seals
  • Texas Speed 7.400" Hardened Chromoly Pushrods
  • Bosch Type 3 4-hole EV1 42lb/hr @ 59lbs (P/N: 0280155737)
  • 4” MAF Sensor
  • Renegade Hybrid engine mounts
  • LS7/LS3 5 wire MAF sensor to 3 wire LS1 adapter
  • Standalone harness from Easy EFI in Portland, OR.
  •  Swivel Thermostat Housing
  • 160° Performance Thermostat
  • LS1SVBN AN Braided steam vent lines
  •  High-flow fuel rails
  • AN Braided fuel lines
  • Secondary aftermarket push fans
  • OEM Corvette C5 fuel filter/FPR (located in Porsche OEM location)
  • Renegade Hybrid Conversion Kit (Adapter plate, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate)
  • LSX Super Hugger Headers
  • Custom exhaust (Non-CA Compliant)

The engine has been tuned on-street with HP Tuners by Ellis at Speed Secrets.  Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual Porsche gearbox with an upgraded Renegade Hybrid Stage 1.5 clutch.  Additional modifications include AST Moton 2-way adjustable coil-overs with remote reservoirs and front camber plates.  The car has undergone routine service by its builder and the seller notes the car to be very loud (video provided).  It should also be noted that the engine temperature rises while in prolonged traffic and additional parts are said to be included to provide better cooling options for water and oil.

Accompanying this sale is a vast collection of extra accessories and spare parts including the original wheels, bumpers, and decklid (see photo gallery).  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to stand out from the pack and get behind the wheel of this one-of-a-kind Porsche 996 V8-powered SEMA show car.

@meble - I just spoke with the owner and the original gearbox has not been rebuilt, however it has been serviced and a replacement 2nd gear detent has been added to prevent 2nd gear pop-out. The current gearbox shifts smoothly and does not have any known issues. Also, the slave cylinder was replaced with a brand new OEM unit, and the owner is including a brand new master cylinder unit as a spare to be included with the car.

When the LS1 engine was installed the clutch pedal has had a slight modification made to modify the helper spring which adds to better engagement. Additionally the throw-out bearing bearing and pivot points for engagement were replaced with modern parts at the same time.

    Has the gearbox been rebuilt?

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Davidpoer - This car does not currently have catalytic converters installed. I did speak to the owner this morning and he has committed to buying a set of 2 aftermarket catalytic converters that are EPA compliant to go with this car if it meets reserve. The winning bidder will be responsible to have the catalytic converters installed on the car. I thought this was quite nice of him, so consider it a bonus gift should the car sell through on PCAR.

Also, more spare parts for the car were delivered this morning, and there is a TON that goes with it. Today we had more interior plastics, OEM starter, AC compressor, more paperwork, and a new oil temperature gauge delivered. You will need more than a large pickup truck to move away all the spares that go with this awesome car!

@tampagarage - the flares are fiberglass, bumpers are OEM ABS material, and the rear decklid is carbon. The sideskirts are also fiberglass reinforced with ABS inside.

@RumbleAuto @stevetheodore thanks for the info. As a California native and having several cars that did not pass smog, it's just a huge PITA. I would be all over this if I didn't live in CA! Such a unique car. GLWS!

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Breakthru - Although the car started out in California, we can only surmise that it would take a bit of custom work and effort to get it legally registered there again. The one thing it has going in its favor is that the engine is considerably newer than the car, which is good for California standards. However, to pass smog and other visual inspections would take a bit of work and we don't want to give any California residents the wrong idea that it would be a piece of cake. Could it be done? I bet it could. Would it be easy? Probably not very easy.

  • Breakthru 2 years, 10 monthsago

I'm sure this is a silly question, but there's no paperwork that allows this transplant to pass CA emissions are there?

OK, we're within the final 24 hours of auction so please be sure to get your questions to me soon if you're a potential bidder as I want to ensure that I have time to get answers for you (which may not be possible in the final 1-2 hours of auction). I appreciate all the private messages as well, and hope that one of you will be the lucky new owner of this car when the dust settles tomorrow.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Bcs82000 - I spoke to the owner today and it has all the components for AC except the compressor installed. To make it work you'd need an LS series AC compressor wired to the Porsche harness (which is all in the car) and custom AC lines in the engine bay. The Porsche factory lines are there, but wouldn't be sufficient due to their placement.

  • Bcs82000 (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

How does the AC work? I’m in sunny AZ.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@kkromidas - thanks for your question. I spoke to the owner this morning and he replied that the LS1 had been refreshed considerably within the last 1000 miles. It had its new cam installed, a new built valvetrain, fresh gaskets (including head gasket) and main/rod bearings replaced prior to installation into the 996 so has been nearly rebuilt for use in this chassis.

  • kkromidas 2 years, 10 monthsago

Idea on mileage of the LS1? I understand it was rebuilt but what is/was mileage? Thank you.

More spare parts were delivered today, including a pair of OEM tan seats for this car.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@battman - thanks for your questions. The rubbing is caused by the lowered ride height and there is a bit of contact being made at least in the rear. This suspension is fully adjustable and the car could be raised up to rectify that issue.

Regarding the driving video, we chose to focus on drive-ability over performance and we chose a 'medium' speed pace. The car flat out rips, but driving videos are hard because if you drive too slow people are upset you cannot see what the car can do but if you drive too fast people complain that you're beating up the car and they wouldn't want to buy a car treated like that. It's pretty much a lose-lose. As I keep telling people the performance is likely comparable with a 996TT in terms of straight line speed, but of course with mountains of torque down low.

  • battman (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@ stevetheodore Great looking car. I remember seeing this at SEMA and tried to find the owner to invite the car to run at the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational.

During the drive video there were numerous times when you can hear the tire(s) rubbing. Where is it rubbing and what will it take to correct?

During that same video the car is being driven quite tamely. This car should have some serious straight line performance if it has been sorted. Is there a reason why you didn’t push it a little harder?

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Hoomski - I checked with the owner and the color is not a specific Porsche color, although it does harken towards at least one of the IROC colors used in the early 1970s. There is a can with leftover paint provided with the spare parts for the new owner too.

  • Hoomski (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@RumbleAuto @stevetheodore thx for the response & explanation.
    One more question:
    What color is this Porsche?
Is that a factory Porsche color or something picked just for the SEMA show?

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

@Hoomski - Thank you for the question. To clarify, the car does not overheat.

When in constant movement, the car operates at roughly 180° but once you start sitting in traffic the gauge will move to indicate approximately 220°. The LSx engines are well known and documented to operate at 220° to 230° so the vehicle is not overheating.

As far as the cooling components, the car is currently equipped with the OEM Porsche side radiators and had the OEM fan resistors rebuilt and replaced, a common failure on the 996 platform. As a precaution, a set of aftermarket fans have also been installed on the radiators as a push orientation with a lower temperature trigger.

Additionally, the auction includes a second hand OEM Porsche center radiator and trim kit for the new owner to install. Furthermore, a brand new aftermarket oil cooler, AN fittings/lines, electric fan for oil cooler, and the appropriate plate to adapt AN fittings to the LSx engine for installation of oil cooling system are all included. Finally, the owner is also including a brand new aftermarket 10" fan to be installed on the decklid to help evacuate engine bay temperatures.

The owner was in the process of setting the vehicle up to be a track dedicated vehicle but due to family situations is relocating overseas which is why many of these components are brand new and being included with the sale of the vehicle to help the next owner get it fully prepped for track use.

  • Hoomski (registered bidder) 2 years, 10 monthsago

    @RumbleAuto @stevetheodore
Why does this car overheat and how often ?
Did you upgrade the original radiator & fans? Or are they still the Porsche units.

  • RumbleAuto (seller) 2 years, 10 monthsago

Welcome to our auction! This amazing Porsche has been comprehensively modified to become the beast you see featured here, and we are excited to be able to offer it. We will do our best to answer all questions and the car is available for viewing at our dealership near Issaquah, Washington. Happy bidding, and we are hopeful that this awesome 996 will find a new home by auctions end.
