Now available for auction is this 2001 BMW E36/8 Z3 3.0 Coupe finished in Cosmos Black Metallic over Black and Walnut Nappa leather.  This 2001 example is reported to be the only North American Z3 Coupe to have been ordered in this particular color combination with a factory sunroof delete for the 2001 model year.  It also features optional fine wood trim, Sports Seats, an M Sports steering wheel, rear differential lock, a 5-speed automatic transmission, and an M54 straight-six engine.  Originally a California car, this Z3 is said to have been relocated to Michigan in 2017 before it was acquired by the current owner in the Fall of 2020.  Accompanied by a collection of maintenance records, this rare Z3 Coupe is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Michigan while showing approximately 65k miles on the odometer.

This Z3 is finished in Cosmos Black Metallic (303) and is distinguished as the higher-specification 3.0 model with a widened rear stance, a slightly more aggressive front fascia, and dual exhaust tips. The kidney grilles, fender vents, and fender-mounted emblems pay homage to the classic BMW 507 roadster.  The seller reports very minor swirl marks throughout the exterior as well as one area of peeling clear coat on the rear spoiler. CARFAX suggests minor damage to have occurred in December of 2020, although the seller contests this as an error and is actively working with CARFAX to redact the statement. This Z3 rides on two-piece 17” BMW Style 42 wheels dressed in Hankook Ventus V12 Evo2 tires dated from 2017.

The cabin features Black and Walnut Nappa leather upholstery, optional Sport Seats, and fine wood trim. The chrome interior trim option also equips chrome rings around the gauges as well as a chrome finish to the door lock pins, door release levers, and the headlight pull knob.  Driver amenities include air conditioning, power accessories, cruise control, the Harman Kardon Hi-Fi sound system, and a BMW Business CD stereo. The leather-wrapped M-Sport multifunction steering wheel sits ahead of a 155-MPH speedometer, a 7k-RPM tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature.  Some normal signs of wear are noted on the driver seat and the seller reports that the driver’s seat has slight play and may need to be re-tightened.  An aftermarket laser jammer has been integrated into the front bumper, and the seller confirms all original gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

This Z3 coupe is powered by a 3.0L M54 straight-six engine featuring double VANOS variable valve timing and a factory-rated output of 225 HP and 214 lb.-ft of torque. Power is directed to the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission and factory limited-slip differential.  The performance is further enhanced with an upgraded SuperSprint muffler and AC Schnitzer intake and tune.  Records provided by the previous owner show regular maintenance to have been carried out over the years and the seller reports that a complete fluid flush was carried out upon their purchase in 2020.

This sale will include a clean title. Incredibly fun to drive and increasingly sought-after by enthusiasts, this rare Z3 Coupe offers an exceptional value.

Interesting auction. Only a few bids on this nice Z3.

The last bid was maybe overmarket???

Since there were no other bids, the winner gets his/her prize for what’s it’s worth to them, rather than a bidding war.

I believe it was Jay Leno who said something along the line of “you never pay too much for a collectible car, you just bought it too early” or something like that. ..

Regarding the minor damage reported in December of 2020: I have had a conversation with Carfax Customer Service - and my next step is to get a letter from my workshop, to confirm there was no accident or damage on the car. The car was dropped off for paint correction on the front bumper cover.

@shant88 - I had a trusted body shop look into this, but didn’t find any signs of bodywork or paintwork - which gave me enough confidence to buy the car.

The carfax states the following (2003):
“Vehicle inspected after an accident or other incident. Damage to left center pillar”

I specifically had the left center pillar inspected and found no evidence of any damage or work. Not sure what the reported “incident” could have been.

@PeaceEngineered - Hi there, you should be able to revert back to factory tune.

Thanks and good luck to the bidders, and everyone else who is planning on bidding!

This is a solid piece of machinery (with a rare spec) that I wish I didn't need to sell. I have taken a couple 400mi road trips in it with no issues. If you're considering driving it across the country, I can vouch for it making the trip.

Just noticed the damage reported from 1st owner, i thought it was only the minor one in 2020 :/ I wonder what the extent of that was.
Also wondering about the gap between left fender and hood

Hello. I live in an area that will test for the factory software installation. Is the tune reversible without detriment in regards to the intake and exhaust upgrades? Thanks.
