The R129 series made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989, undergoing facelifts in the model years of 1996 and 1999. This 2001 example is among the final iterations of the R129 and was initially delivered to Stead Motors in Walnut Creek, California, finished in Glacier White over gray Nappa leather. Pairing a 5-speed automatic transmission with a 5.0-liter V8, it features the AMG Styling Package, 18” five-spoke AMG wheels, a Bose sound system, automatic climate control, and more. Showing approximately 33k miles on the odometer, it is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Pennsylvania.
This SL500 comes finished in Glacier White (143) and features the AMG Styling Package, which adds an AMG-designed aerodynamic lower body kit including a front apron with mesh air intake, a contoured rear apron, and sculpted side skirts with Sport emblems. Other equipment includes a removable body-colored hard top, a retractable black soft top, and staggered-width 18” five-spoke AMG wheels dressed in BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report noting minor damage in April 2017.
The cabin presents grey Nappa leather upholstery (238A) complemented by burl wood accents along the center console and door panels. Amenities consist of power-adjustable seats with memory functions, a 4-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, an automatically dipping rearview mirror, a Bose sound system, automatic climate control, and a deployable roll bar.
This SL500 is powered by an all-aluminum M113 5.0L V8 engine rated at 302 HP and 339 lb.-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission. Braking is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. Service in late 2023 is said to have included a brake fluid flush, new hood insulation, and an oil change. The CARFAX report shows a total of 19 service history records.
This sale will include a clean title, a window sticker, owner’s manuals, two keys, a toolkit, and a first aid kit.
