Finished in Polar Silver Metallic over a Metropol Blue full leather interior, this 2001 Porsche 996 Carrera 4 was acquired by the seller from a local PCA member to create an off-road safari-style build. Nicknamed “Feral Hog” it features a rebuilt engine with a 3.8-liter displacement upgrade as well as an Elephant Racing Safari suspension kit, Fister mufflers, Numeric Racing shifter cables, a GT3-style front bumper, steel brush guards, a ducktail rear spoiler, mudflaps, custom Braid wheels, a harness bar, rebuilt brakes, ceramic-coated exhaust, and more. This custom Safari-style 996 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois with approximately 6k miles driven on the rebuilt motor.

This Carrera 4 Coupe was factory-finished in Polar Silver Metallic and has been modified with a Getty Designs GT3-style front bumper and ducktail rear spoiler along with blue-painted steel brush guards at the front and rear. Other accessories include custom vinyl graphics, a “Feral Hog” script rear emblem, blue Rally Armor mudflaps, refinished blue brake calipers, and optional Litronic bi-xenon headlights with washers. The car rides on custom white-painted Braid wheels paired with Rennline wheel studs and Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires. The seller notes the front bumper and hood show some imperfections from off-road use and has some chips as its made from a more flexible and durable urethane material than OEM. The seller adds that all remaining decals can be removed upon the next owner's request. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing previous minor damage.

Inside, this 996 features Metropol Blue full leather upholstery including optional heated and 8-way power-adjustable seats in supple leather with driver lumbar support and memory settings. Other options include an Exclusive handbrake lever and gear shift knob in carbon fiber, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, an electric sunroof, automatic climate control, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), self-dimming mirrors and integrated rain sensor, an onboard computer, and Nokia DSP audio. The rear seats have been removed and a custom blue-painted harness bar has been installed. The seller adds that the original rear seats are included with the sale and some normal signs of wear are present throughout the cabin.

Under current ownership, the car’s flat-six engine was removed and shipped to EBS Racing in Reno, Nevada, where it was rebuilt and upgraded to a 3.8-liter displacement featuring lightweight Pauter connecting rods, Schrick camshafts, and an LN Engineering IMS bearing solution. The rebuild also included new ignition coils and spark plugs, drive belt pulleys, fuel injectors, an air/oil separator, engine mounts, a new fuel filter, a coolant expansion tank, a ceramic-coated exhaust, and Fister-modified OEM mufflers. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission with upgraded Numeric Racing shifter cables. The car features an Elephant Racing Safari suspension kit which includes MCS coilovers, Tarrett strut mounts, sway bar links, and subframe spacers, Eibach springs, and Rennline rear toe arms. Additional build items include rebuilt OEM brakes, a new ignition switch and lock cylinder, a new mass-airflow (MAF) sensor, two new oxygen sensors, an OEM rear left axle assembly, a new clutch slave cylinder, a rebuilt right rear CV joint, and a new battery in 2023. The seller adds that approximately 6k miles have been driven on the rebuilt motor and new suspension.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, the original rear seats, build invoices, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This car was designed and built as a proof-of-concept as well as to be an all-conditions, capable daily driver. It easily handles snow, mud, sand, and spirited trail driving. The 3.8L motor provides excellent power to all four wheels, particularly in heavy terrain and the Falken Wildpeak tires are surprisingly sure-footed even on pavement. This 996 is an absolute blast to drive and everyone who has had a chance behind the wheel has come away with a huge smile. The name Feral Hog derives from the purist hatred of 996s, as feral hogs are hated throughout the south, and the porcine lineage of the Porsche brand begins with the Pink Pig. This 996 is as tough and quick as a feral hog but is much more fun to be around.”

Folks - no dog in the fight here other than I’ve done the same thing to an almost identical car but …. you “might” be able duplicate this car for 2x what’s being bid here… and that’s not even factoring in the 6-12 months you’d have to spend doing it! Whoever buys this will be the day’s luckiest buyer!

  • Pcarchicago (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Whoever wins this is going to get a great build. I've spent time riding in this and have seen it around since it was built. First-class build and first-class seller.

  • gemhawkz (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

thanks very tempting buy, great handling video.

  • andyawb (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@gemhawkz Not a strange question but an exciting one to answer! No prep needed! Oil service was done about 3000 miles ago, so you’ll be due about 1500 miles after you get home. We’ll be sure to set the tire pressures. All fluids are set, including washer fluid. We’d recommend some good podcasts or playlists, snacks, and look forward to a steady ride out west!

  • andyawb (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@gemhawkz I just round-tripped the car from Chicago to Miami and back. We are changing the oil, all other fluids and filters are up to date and the car is ready to go. Refer to the short highway drive video for how it handles at speed on pavement. It’s extremely competent and comfortable for a cross country trek.

  • gemhawkz (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

I know this is a strange question but how prep would need to done to the car to road trip it from your location to Arizona?

Fantastic build! I was lucky to grab a ride in this vehicle during a Porsche event…In the Chicago Burbs… we had beautiful Porsches displayed amongst tall grasses. Awesome event… the host of the event created a trail loop and Andy was giving awesome “Safari“ rides throughout the tall grass trails… It was an absolute blast and this vehicle is over the top!!! • andyawb (seller) 1 month, 3 weeksago

@BScifers thanks! I hope to see it again either in Chicago or somewhere Texas. It’s been a great drive and other than answering any last day questions I’ll leave everyone with this: I’m not a fan of low mileage Porsches because the premium you have to pay gets burned up if you use it for what it was built for….driving it like heck. This 996 is like a low miler in all of the new and rebuilt major components, but obviously it wont carry that low mile price tag or the dealer “added profit” tack-on. Whoever ends up taking it will be able to drive it, hard and to their hearts content!

  • BScifers (registered bidder) 1 month, 3 weeksago

Good luck today @andyawb! I'm going to miss seeing the Feral Hog around if the winner's not local. Hopefully it can return to Checkeditout at the very least! Happy bidding everyone, this is a truly awesome car that Andy built.

  • andyawb (seller) 1 month, 4 weeksago

@RickMountain thanks for the message. No doubt I wish everyone who is interested could take the car for a test drive and see for themselves. As I said in a previous reply, the solidity of this car amazes me. I have had 997’s and a 991.1 targa and they all had rattles. The coupe is naturally more robust anyway but this one is exceptionally quiet while dispatching any terrain you throw at it.

  • RickMountain (registered bidder) 1 month, 4 weeksago

I, like you, did a proof of concept “safari” build on my high mileage 2001 C4 - and can say that it is the perfect car to modify that way - a true billy goat (I did the same w/ elephant racing, braid wheels, etc.) - these high mileage 996’s with IMS done and with some mechanical TLC are work horses! Your build is awesome and I have to laugh at paint meter readings: who cares? Better would be measuring spots where the paint has been rubbed off by the snow and ice and mud! I personally decided to forego paint issues and just wrapped the car - when I sell it I’ll put “paint meter”readings of the wrap and see who complains! GLWTA - this car is a gem - and someone needs to drive drive and drive this some more!

  • Wildwilly22 (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

I’m local to you. Can I see the car?

  • andyawb (seller) 2 monthsago

@Amasdaha The original installation of Elephant Racing components took place in August 2022 at just over 150,000 miles. Then we began a process of testing and adjusting as we took the car through every kind of terrain we could find, particularly looking for what would loosen up, what were the optimal alignment settings, and what could we break on the car and then improve. After the adjusting phase, we went through the entire suspension again in June of 2023 and that's when we upgraded to the Tarret links, replaced the left rear axle and rebuilt the one CV joint. We had really beat and abused the car for a year and 3000 miles to get a true picture of how it would hold up. After all of that, I can tell you this car is remarkably quiet and so stable at speed that it's almost hard to believe. I just sent a brief highway-driving video that should go up today. It was taken during my drive back to Chicago from Miami where the car was displayed at Das Renntreffen and you will see that hands-off at 74mph the car is near silent without a vibration at the wheel. Total miles on the suspension setup is about 7000, with the last 3000 being Chicago-Miami-Chicago round trip in the last 30 days.

  • Amasdaha (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

How many miles on the suspension upgrades? How tight is the interior, or are things starting to get pretty loose and vibrating?

  • andyawb (seller) 2 monthsago

@997GT3 ductile iron liners. I just added the build invoices with complete parts list from EBS Racing. A couple nice features I had left out of the description: high performance valve springs and EBS's X51-type oil baffle.

@Panda The suspension setup is a 2 1/2" lift from stock. Adding in the lift from tires, the lowest point on the underbody are the subframe mounts of the rear brush guards which measure just over 6 3/4" off the ground. Front lip clearance is 10", rear bumper lip clearance is 12"

  • andyawb (seller) 2 monthsago

Underbody pictures added. FYI the "dirty" pics were taken immediately upon returning from Silver Lake Dune driving, where we used a pre-filter cover on the air filter to ensure no sand or dust would get sucked into the intake.

  • THBuyer 2 monthsago

I know this car and whoever ends up with the winning bid will end up with a fantastic car, no question about it.

  • Panda (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

Loved my 996!!! Looking for a 991 c4s cab now but I’ll blow some money on a jeep replacement lol

  • andyawb (seller) 2 monthsago

@Panda I will get ground clearance numbers into the listing tomorrow. Polar Silver is all paint, remaining decals on all paint surfaces are vinyl and removable, brush bars are blue powdercoat . I agree on the Pink Pig livery, it would be great. The Feral Hog motif was done with deliberate intent regarding the general purist disdain for the 996. Totally unwarranted in my opinion, these are superb 911's if you enjoy driving.

  • Panda (registered bidder) 2 monthsago

What is the ground clearance on this ? Also is it all painted or some vinyl on the doors ?

@Dbahnick Yes! All of the remaining decals can be removed, we have already taken off the MPC shield and the hogs from both sides and have submitted a large number of pics taken yesterday of the car in its current "clean" state, so they should be uploaded to the listing soon. The stickers in the driver side quarter window can also be removed, but they are a road history of where the 996 has been under our ownership.

Hello and welcome to my auction! I'll get right to the horsepower question: We have not dyno'ed it so this is just based on driving experience and speculation knowing the mechanical upgrades. A 4S coupe comes from the factory making 320 from its 3.6, and this is a 3.8 with lightweight rods and hotter cams, so I would guess it has to be north of 350. We have driven it through muddy trails and at the Silver Lake dunes in Michigan and it powers out of the hole with no problem at all, it is very quick. I had a 997 S cabriolet which makes 355 from the factory and this car is noticeably quicker.
I have a couple of driving videos I will ask them to put up. Thanks for looking and I'm here to answer all questions!
