Up for auction is this 2001 Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe finished in Meridian Metallic over a black interior. A truly remarkable example, this 996 came factory equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, additional leather upholstery, and a desirable exterior Aerokit including rear bumper side fins. The IMS bearing and flywheel are said to have been recently addressed, although the seller reports an issue with the rear crankshaft bearing. This generously optioned 996 Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York while showing just under 39k miles on the odometer.

This 996 is finished in the uncommon shade of Meridian Metallic and features a desirable factory Aerokit (XAA) including a revised front fascia, GT3-style rocker panels, and a fixed rear wing.  Also equipped are the rare factory rear bumper side fins (XAD) which further complement the look of the Aerokit. The paint is described as being original with the possible exception of the front bumper cover.  Noted imperfections include minor curb rash on the wheels and some scrapes on the lower front bumper, detailed images are provided in the photo gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.  This example has been fitted with 18" Porsche Sport Classic II wheels featuring a custom chrome finish and Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires showing dated codes from 2015.

Inside, this 996 features a black interior with optional leather seats as well as a leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels.  Other factory equipment includes an onboard computer, Litronic xenon headlights, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, and a CDR-220 radio.  All gauges and accessories are said to be fully functional, although the radio display is noted to be missing some pixels and the rear glovebox hinge appears to be broken.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.4L flat-six engine rated at 296 HP and 258 lb.-ft of torque.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission allowing this Carrera to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in approximately 5 seconds. Service history is provided on CARFAX and IMS bearing and flywheel are reported to have been addressed shortly before the seller's acquisition in 2019.  Approximately six months ago, a vibration was noticed in the engine which has been identified as a faulty rear crankshaft bearing.  The vibration is said to occur at above 3500 RPM and the bearing, crankshaft, or engine may be in need of replacement.

The sale will include one key, owner's books, and a clean title. With its relatively low mileage and rare factory options, this 6-speed 996 Carrera presents an exceptional value.

@ryangfriedman thank you seller everyone knows you are a reputable seller of fine Porsches.

  • ryangfriedman (seller) 2 years, 11 monthsago

@ruf3600 we removed the transmission, fly wheel & clutch. We installed a dual indicator on top of the crank shaft. When you push up and down on the crank shaft you’re supposed to have very little play..and we have a little bit more play than normal. Not a rid bearing - thats connected to piston and would make a knocking noise during acceleration- that’s not the issue - this is related to the rear crank bearing. We decided at that point to just sell it and move on - we didn’t fully break it down so it potentially could just need a case or a crank shaft or potentially a motor would be the last thing. We are just being transparent - if it’s some sort of simple fix for the buyer Great! We just want to assume the worst - but overall the car is in great condition. Brand new fly wheel, clutch, rms Ims and actual body and interior are gorgeous.

How was a bad crank bearing diagnosed. Seems impossible to do without tearing down the motor. Do you mean a bad rod bearing generating rod knock and not a crank bearing which to me implies a main bearing problem?

Nice for a Roller. Looks like it will need a new engine and a full refresh of all the suspension parts after 20 years.
