Finished in the rarely seen color of Rainforest Green Metallic over a premium Brown Natural Leather interior, this 2001 Porsche Boxster pairs a 5-speed manual transmission with its 2.7-liter flat-six engine. It was purchased by the current owner as a restoration project and has since undergone significant service and refurbishment which has been thoroughly documented as part of a YouTube video series. Showing approximately 78k miles on the odometer, this Boxster is now being offered for auction out of Connecticut.

This 986 comes finished in Rainforest Green Metallic with a newly installed black soft top and heated glass rear window. Optional 17” Boxster Design wheels are fitted with colored Porsche crest center caps and Velozza ZXV4 tires (4417). The seller carried out paint correction and recently replaced the front windshield cowl and gasket. A scratch is noted on the front hood and passenger side door, detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Brown Natural Leather interior received a pair of upgraded power Sport Seats, a cupholder kit for the glove compartment, and new leather trim to replace several cracked original pieces. Factory equipment includes air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors, a sound system, a wind deflector, and a three-spoke steering wheel. The seller notes the A/C system has been recharged and confirms all gauges and accessories to be fully functional.

A naturally aspirated 2.7-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 217 HP and 192 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission with an upgraded 997 shifter. Service completed earlier in 2022 includes the installation of new spark plugs, brake pads, and rotors as well as a brake fluid flush. A new OEM air/oil separator is also included in the sale along with new OEM Bilstein shock absorbers to be installed by the next owner.

This Boxster is accompanied by a clean title, original owner’s manuals, and some service records.

@the.autoholic I think it might be that the new soft top hasn’t stretched enough yet and isn’t ‘used’ to fold. Sometimes it goes all the way down.Often a problem with new tops.

  • the.autoholic (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Hi seller- the tonneau cover on the passenger side appears lifted. Do you have any comments or close up pictures? Trying to understand why that would be- perhaps related to top install….

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@Kaimax No. New ones come with the car.

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    @Kaimax Nope. All complete.

  • Kaimax 1 year, 6 monthsago

have the new struts been fitted already?

  • Kaimax 1 year, 6 monthsago

is one of the front wheels missing a lug nut?

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@skylane9 Ah yes, I see what you are referring to. I’ve just taken some additional photos and added them to the gallery. There is road rash although you can’t see it unless you’re taking a photo at that crazy angle! As I said in my video, the bumper does need some work but it is quite presentable and certainly not a complete mess.

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.

  • skylane9 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

The first 6 pictures showed the curb rash, some better than others. As for the other frontend pictures of the bumper you shot them too high, can't see the lower part. One or two good pictures showing the bottom half of front bumper. Just like the picture of the rear bumper.
    thanks!

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@skylane9 Hi there! Which picture number are you referring to?

  • skylane9 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Jay, I noticed heavy curb rash in a pictures of the lower front passenger bumper, was there other damage to the bumper?

@spartansix Good seeing you today, Dave! Thanks for the kind words about the car! It’s in pretty good shape and all ready for someone to take it forward!

  • spartansix (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Okay all - I drove the car this afternoon. Here are my thoughts from a relatively quick investigation:

The paint presents very nicely, although there are some spots that could do with a bit of PDR. I didn't notice the pictured scratch in person until I looked for it. The interior is very clean for a 20 year old car, especially a Boxster (where the soft touch paint is usually all scratched up) and the seats are a good color match—though not totally perfect. The new top, however, is essentially perfect. Some of the plastics are a bit faded (e.g. the bumper grille inserts) but could be dyed or painted easily. Wheels appear better in person than in the pictures here, though I'd probably put on a different set for aesthetics. I didn't put it up on a lift but saw no corrosion to note. Overall looks-wise it will never be a concours winner but it does not look beat up. You have to look closely to see that it's a driver quality car.

The car started without any smoke, power seemed adequate for a 2.7, and the transmission shifted smoothly. No warning lights or CEL. The car handled fine but there were a few little noises from the suspension (control arm? maybe a hint of a wheel bearing getting old?) overall nothing that felt urgent but worth checking out eventually. The exhaust sounded stock, and was a bit quiet for my taste.

I did note that the clutch engagement was on the high side, which makes me guess that this is the original clutch. It didn't slip, but with the mileage, that's probably something to put on the medium-term to-do list. If you're worried about the IMS, that's when you should address that. Brakes and rotors looked (and felt) new. Forgot to try the radio and the AC, but the seller explained their HVAC repair and it sounds like they did it correctly and addressed the disintegrating foam issue that plagues 986/996s.

Overall, this seemed like it has all the makings of a good little car. It's not perfect, but I think it has been represented honestly.

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@spartansix Wide open! You’re welcome to come and see it!

  • spartansix (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@Winner Thanks. I'll look into them since they look like they are a bit taller at the headrest than mine. Good luck with the auction!!

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@Dexter_liu2022 hi there! Original OEM bearing is in the car.

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@ssalo These are the OEM Porsche sports seats. They were an optional extra on the cars when they were new.

  • Dexter_liu2022 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

What's the IMS bearing status of this car? Has it been replaced and if so with what type of bearings, i.e. OEM vs. say, LN Engineering ceramic?

  • ssalo 1 year, 6 monthsago

Gorgeous! I just picked up one myself. The seats are beat up, and I noticed that the seats you have in yours are taller, which I'm looking for. What are they?

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@Lovedrivinfast That’s very kind of you! It has been a lot of hard work but it looks lovely now! Original IMS. Not that IMS bearings don’t implode but I think it’s considerably rarer than the people who sell you the remedy would have you believe. Take a look at the video I did on the IMS! This one is working fine!

  • Lovedrivinfast 1 year, 6 monthsago

This is such a neat 986 with pretty low miles. You made this car look and drive sooo nice Jay. This color is sooo special and you have done everything to make this an excellent driver for a long time. Like your videos on the car can’t remember did you ever replace the IMS on this car? It’s really hard to beat the feel of driving a 986 the engine behind your head sounds like a symphony. Whoever gets this is gonna be lucky

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

    @sfb1041 Thanks so much, Sal!

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@jbaumann83 PS… No. I think these things can wait honestly. I’d do the front left lower control arm but there’s nothing here that is dangerous or imminent as far as I know.

  • Winner (seller) 1 year, 6 monthsago

@jbaumann83 good luck! It would look GREAT in Ann Arbor!

  • sfb1041 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Good luck with your auction, the car seems to be a very well sorted out Boxster and should give the next owner plenty of fun and make them proud to be the next owner. You are a pleasure to watch and learn from your exploits.

Jay do you think the shocks and the air/oil separator would need to be addressed right away?

  • jbaumann83 (registered bidder) 1 year, 6 monthsago

Jay love what you did to the Boxter, it looks amazing. I'm a big fan of your YTube channel. Can't wait to see what you buy next. I hope to bid and win this car. It would look great driving on the streets of Ann Arbor, MI. GO BLUE!
